Education can be regarded as a striking example of the recent developments between 'euphoria' and 'normalcy'.

These algorithms have been implemented as part of a system that has been used on many industrial designs. The focus of Leaf Cell and Hierarchical Compaction Techniques is three…-fold. First, new ideas for compaction of leaf cells are presented. These cells can range from small transistor-level layouts to very large layouts generated by automatic Place and Route tools. Second, new approaches for hierarchical pitchmatching compaction are described and the concept of a Minimum Design is introduced. The system for hierarchical compaction is built on top of the leaf cell compaction engine and uses the algorithms implemented for leaf cell compaction in a modular fashion. Third, a new representation for designs called Virtual Interface, which allows for efficient topological specification and representation of hierarchical layouts, is outlined. The Virtual Interface representation binds all of the algorithms and their implementations for leaf and hierarchical compaction into an intuitive and easy-to-use system. From the Foreword: `.In this book, the authors provide a comprehensive approach to compaction based on carefully conceived abstractions. They describe the design of algorithms that provide true hierarchical compaction based on linear programming, but cut down the complexity of the computations through introduction of innovative representations that capture the provably minimum amount of required information needed for correct compaction. In most compaction algorithms, the complexity goes up with the number of design objects, but in this approach, complexity is due to the irregularity of the design, and hence is often tractable for most designs which incorporate substantial regularity. Here the reader will find an elegant treatment of the many challenges ofcompaction, and a clear conceptual focus that provides a unified approach to all aspects of the compaction task.' This monograph demonstrates how in certain models of parallel computation it is possible to combine efficiency and fault-tolerance and shows how it is possible to develop efficient algorithms without concern for fault-tolerance, and then correctly and efficiently execute these algorithms on parallel machines whose processors are subject to arbitrary dynamic fail-stop errors. The efficient algorithmic approaches to multiprocessor fault-tolerance presented in this monograph make a contribution towards bridging the gap between the abstract models of parallel computation and realizable parallel architectures. Fault-Tolerant Parallel Computation presents the state of the art in algorithmic approaches to fault-tolerance in efficient parallel algorithms. The monograph synthesizes work that was presented in recent symposia and published in refereed journals by the authors and other leading researchers. It is the purpose of this book to guide the reader through some of its main aspects. During an intensive weekend in May 1996 a workshop on Gaussian scale-sp…ace theory was held in Copenhagen, which was attended by many of the leading experts in the field. The bulk of this book originates from this workshop. Presently there exist only two books on the subject. In contrast to Lindeberg's monograph (Lindeberg, 1994e) this book collects contributions from several scale space researchers, whereas it complements the book edited by ter Haar Romeny (Haar Romeny, 1994) on non-linear techniques by focusing on linear diffusion. This book is divided into four parts. The reader not so familiar with scale-space will find it instructive to first consider some potential applications described in Part 1. Parts II and III both address fundamental aspects of scale-space. Whereas scale is treated as an essentially arbitrary constant in the former, the latter em phasizes the deep structure, i.e. the structure that is revealed by varying scale. Finally, Part IV is devoted to non-linear extensions, notably non-linear diffusion techniques and morphological scale-spaces, and their relation to the linear case. In the first part of the volume, morphological and immunohistological criteria are given for the various subtypes of thymic epithelial tumors. The two competing classifica tions and nomenclature systems existing to date are jointly considered. In addition. mor phological overlaps between organotypic and nonorganotypic thymic epithelial tumors are stressed, since they may have a major bearing on diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. The second part of the volume is devoted to recent data on normal T-cell maturation and the impact of abnormal T-cell development in thymic epithelial tumors on the development of paraneoplastic autoimmunity. Because of the wide and interdisciplinary readership of this series, our aim for each chapter has been to provide ample background for those not highly familiar with the topic, while emphasizing the most recent advances. Furthermore, the chapters have been written with the clinician in mind, whether she or he is an oncologist, endocrinologist, surgeon, generalist, pathologist, or radiologist. As such, the authors' mission has been to focus on clinically relevant issues and to present the scientific basis of current or potential future advances in a manner easily digestible to the nonexpert. Endocrine tumors often cause problems for the patient by virtue of their hormonal activity, which may frequently (but certainly not always) over shadow the adverse consequences related to their mass per se. In fact, it is important to keep in mind that endocrine tumors can manifest two biologically separable but often intertwined properties, namely, increased cell mass and abnormal hormonal function. These need not go hand in hand, and their distinction has definite clinical relevance in, for example, the increasingly recognized problem of incidentally discovered adrenal or pituitary masses.

Auf der beiliegenden CD-ROM befinden sich neben Animationen auch die im Buch abgedruckten MAPLE-Worksheets, mit denen der Stoff direkt beim Lernen aus dem Buch interaktiv eingeübt werden kann. Neben dem Gebrauch zur Vorlesung sind die Bände also auch hervorragend für das Selbststudium geeignet. Der zweite Band umfaßt die Themengebiete "Differential- und Integralrechnung für Funktionen mehrerer Varibaler", "Gewöhnliche und partielle Differentialgleichungen" und "Fourier-Analysis". Über den AutorThomas Westermann studierte an der Universität Konstanz Mathematik und Physik mit Diplomabschluss 1985 in Mathematik. Er promovierte 1988 im Bereich der Computerphysik und war anschließend wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe mit den Arbeitsschwerpunkten Modellierung und Simulation. Seit 1993 ist er Professor für Angewandte Mathematik und Computersimulation an der HS Karlsruhe. Für sein didaktisches Konzept wurde der Autor mit dem Preis der G.A. Müller-Stiftung zur Förderung der Qualität der Lehre ausgezeichnet. 2008 wurde ihm der Lehrpreis des Landes Baden-Württemberg auch für seine didaktisch hervorragenden Lehrbücher verliehen. und das nicht nur für FH-Studenten. Ein Werk, dass sich sowohl zum Lernen, als auch zum Nachschlagen hervorragend eignet. Das Buch ist durchgehend gut gegliedert und vor allem ist es verständlich geschrieben, was ich bei vielen anderen Mathebüchern vermisse. Westermann erschlägt nicht mit Seitenlangen Rechnungen, bei denen man nach der dritte Zeile schon nicht mehr weiß, was eigentlich in der ersten stand. Ein gelungenes Lehrbuch, mit dem sogar Mathe Spaß macht! Dieses Buch ist ein äußerst empfehlenswerter Leitfaden für die Mathematik im Grundstudium und eignet sich auch hervorragend als Nachschlagewerk.Was dieses Werk wohl am meisten von den Standard- Mathematikwerken unterscheidet ist der starke Bezug zu verschiedensten Anwendungsbereichen. Westermann gelingt es mit diesem Buch die Mathematik dem Studenten nahezubringen, indem er auf praxisorientierte Beispiele zurückgreift. Die Anwendungsbeispiele sind sehr hilfreich für das Verständnis, da die "abstrakte Rechnerei" zum Werkzeug wird, um reale Probleme zu lösen. Der Aufbau ist sehr gut strukturiert. Themengebiete beginnen mit den oben genannten Anwendungsbeispielen. Die einzelnen Schritte werden ersichtlich dargelegt und mit Beispielen vertieft. Zusätzlich verdeutlichen Graphiken den Sachverhalt. Ein weiterer Bonuspunkt ist, dass es zu allen Themen auch eine Anleitung gibt, die jeweiligen Verfahren mit Maple zu konstruieren. Bevor das nächste Thema angeschnitten wird, erhält man eine Zusammenstellung der Maple-Befehle und das Ganze schließt mit einem Aufgabenteil (Aufgaben zum Rechnen und für Maple) ab, um das gewonnene Wissen zu untermauern. Lösungen sind im Buch dabei, was in vielen anderen Werken leider allzu oft fehlt. Für Maple Anwendungen ist das Verzeichnis von Maple-Befehlen im Buchende sehr hilfreich. Alles in allem kann ich jedem dieses Buch sehr empfehlen. In deutscher Sprache. 564 pages. 23,6 x 15,7 x 3,4 cm.
