The Moon and planets, as well as bright comets, were the key objects of interest. The brighter varia…ble stars were monitored, but photography was in its infancy and digital imaging lay a century in the future. Today, at the start of the twenty-first century, amateurs are better equipped than any professionals of the mid-twentieth century, let alone the nineteenth. An amateur equipped with a 30-cm telescope and a CCD camera can easily image objects below magnitude 20 and, from very dark sites, 22 or 23. Such limits would have been within the realm of the 100- and 200-inch reflectors on Mount Wilson and Mount Palomar in the 1950s, but no other observatories. However, even those telescopes took hours to reach such limits, and then the photographic plates had to be developed, fixed, and examined by eye. In the modern era digital images can be obtained in minutes and analyzed 'on the fly' while more images are being downloaded. Developments can be e-mailed to other interested amateurs in real time, during an observing session, so that when a cataclysmic event takes place amateurs worldwide know about it. As recently as the 1980s, even professional astronomers could only dream of such instantaneous communication and proc- sing ability.

It appears in response to be ginning students (i.e., especially general radiology residents) who have sought guidance with the methodology of evaluating positional rela tionships of the fee…t from radiographs. Since my stepwise 'how to' technique has been well received both in the Show-Me state (at the University of Missouri Columbia) and here in Ohio, it is offered to you as well. To simulate my conventional teaching method, the informal text has an interactive flavor, which I hope makes it useful for you. Please don't be offended by a touch of simplified walking through of material here and there. After all, this is a 'primer,' not a dignified postgraduate treatise. Comments from readers would of course be appreciated by the author. The majority of illustrations are the result of the collaboration with my dear colleague Tamar, in which she artistically interpreted repre sentative radiographs for you to my specifications. The guidelines I gave her included line drawing outlines of the most pertinent bones, to which straight lines were added as appropriate. As a result certain bones, for example the fibula and many phalanges, are omitted if they are unlikely to enhance the impact of the illustrations. The Springer Series in Cognitive Development contains two basic types of books, namely, edited collections of original chapters by several authors, and original volumes written by one author or a small group of authors. The flagship for the Springer Series will be a serial publication of the 'advances' type, carrying the subtitle Progress in Cognitive Development Research. Each volume in the Progress sequence will be strongly thematic, in that it will be limited to some well-defined domain of cognitive-developmental research (e. g. , logical and mathematical de velopment, semantic development). All Progress volumes will be edited collec tions. Editors of such collections, upon consultation with the Series Editor, may elect to have their books published either as contributions to the Progress sequence or as separate volumes. All books written by one author or a small group of authors will be published as separate volumes within the series. A fairly broad definition of cognitive development is being used in the selection of books for this series.

Working with other people who are troubled in this way is indeed stressful. For too long it has been assumed that health professionals should 'get on with it' and put up with any stress that is involved in caring for others. The second aim of this book is to offer practical ways of coping with negative stress. These methods range from simple relaxation techniques, through meditation to methods that involve discussing stress with others: counselling, co-counselling and group work. All the methods described in this book have been used with a variety of health professionals, and not all of these methods will necessarily appeal to you. One of the fundamental points about stress is that it tends to affect each individual idiosyncratically.

This was due primarily to protracted legal proceedings challenging the death penalty on constitutional grounds. After much Sturm und Drang…, the Supreme Court of the United States, by a divided vote, finally decided that 'the death penalty does not invariably violate the Cruel and Unusual Punishment Clause of the Eighth Amendment.' The Court's decisions, however, do not moot the controversy about the death penalty or render this excellent book irrelevant. The ball is now in the court of the Legislature and the Executive. Leg islatures, federal and state, can impose or abolish the death penalty, within the guidelines prescribed by the Supreme Court. A Chief Executive can commute a death sentence. And even the Supreme Court can change its mind, as it has done on many occasions and did, with respect to various aspects of the death penalty itself, durlog the moratorium period. Also, the people can change their minds. Some time ago, a majority, according to reliable polls, favored abolition. Today, a substantial majority favors imposition of the death penalty. The pendulum can swing again, as it has done in the past.

It was Lady Lovelace, the great lady of computers, who delivered the notes and loosely organized writings of Babbage, with her own invaluable amendments, to a world not quite ready to receive them. The Ada language effort has employed hundreds, if not thousands, of minds and a healthy sum of money since its conception. Ada was fostered by the High Order Language Working Group (HOLWG), chartered by the U.S. Department of Defense in January of 1975 with the overall objective of developing a systematic approach to improved use of software by the military. One would think the Pentagon an unlikely foster parent for a new computer language. Regardless of its lineage, the question that begs asking is, of course - Why The answer is by no means a simple one, but some brief background may help to clarify the matter. At present, the Department of Defense is the largest software consumer on earth, employing roughly 400 different computer languages and dialects. In spite of the major role that alc…ohol plays in the health care issues of internal medicine, neurology, and psychiatry, the subject continues to fall between the cracks of the various disciplines. For this reason, it has become almost a discipline of its own; yet there are no academic departments of alcoholism because academic departments are unidisciplinary and alcoholism is clearly a multidisciplinary field within medicine. In spite of the many disciplines involved in the study and treatment of alcoholism, psychiatry continues to have a special, albeit often neglected, relationship to alcoholism, and it is the articulation ofthat relationship which prompted the Department of Psychiatry at the Downstate Medical Center to organize the conference upon which many chapters in this volume are based. Particular emphasis in selecting the topics to be covered was placed on the interface between alcoholism and clinical psychiatry, including affective disorders, schizophrenia, suicide, adolescence, the special problems of women, and psychotherapy, to mention only some of them.

M ossbauer Effect Methodology, Volume 6, records the proceedings of the… Sixth Symposium on M6ssbauer Effect Methodology. The symposium was sponsored by the New England Nuclear Corporation and concentrated on methodology, applications, and spectroscopy, with special sections on lunar sample work and on standardization and nomenclature. The symposium was held at the Palmer House in Chicago on January 25, 1970. Dr. J. C. Walker presided over the after noon and evening sessions. About two hundred participants attended, reflecting the continued importance of and interest in this series. Austin Science Associates, Elron Electronic Industries, High Voltage Engineering Corporation, and Reuter-Stokes Electronic Components Company demonstrated lines of equipment for M6ssbauer work. The usual high degree of interest in the well-designed commercial instrumentation was evident. The highlight of the symposium was the session on lunar samples. Fortuitously, the timing of the symposium permitted it to provide one ofthe earliest exposures ofthe lunar results to the scientific community. Many papers on other applications were presented, including work on frozen aqueous solutions. Four papers on methodology development made up one session, including reports on a polarized source, on a coincidence technique, and on the use of radio frequency to perturb hyperfine levels. As usual, many of the papers report work in fields remote from basic physics.
