The Moon and planets, as well as bright comets, were the key objects of interest. However, even those telescopes took hours to reach such limits, and then the photographic plates had to be developed, fixed, and examined by eye. In the modern era digital images can be obtained in minutes and analyzed 'on the fly' while more images are being downloaded. Developments can be e-mailed to other interested amateurs in real time, during an observing session, so that when a cataclysmic event takes place amateurs worldwide know about it. As recently as the 1980s, even professional astronomers could only dream of such instantaneous communication and proc- sing ability.

Since the early work of Edler and Hertz in 1954, echocardiographic methods have grown in importance and reliability for the diagnosis of many cardiac disorders. The placement of a maneuverable transducer on the tip of a modified endoscope is the result of relatively recent technologic advances. The transesophageal approach is now a reality for obtaining new information from ultra-sonic images of a beating human heart. Since images obtained by transesophageal echo cardiography are uniformly of excellent quality, it extends the diagnostic potential of echocardiography to the patient who is difficult to image from the conventional chest wall approach. More importantly, transesophageal echocardiography provides a means to acquire useful information in new situations, such as the operating room. When this imaging modality is brought to patients undergoing surgical procedures, surgeons and anesthesiologists have a ready means for assessing cardiac performance during anesthesia, directing various surgical approaches and immediately evaluating the results of surgical repair. Transesophageal echocardiographic techniques represent a major vi vii advance in the care of patients with cardiovascular disease. Never before has there been a means to acquire such important information about the heart during an operative intervention. New questions are being asked and new answers are at hand.

Since my stepwise 'how to' technique has been well received both in the Show-Me state (at the University of Missouri Columbia) and here in Ohio, it is offered to you as well. To simulate my conventional teaching method, the informal text has an interactive flavor, which I hope makes it useful for you. Please don't be offended by a touch of simplified walking through of material here and there. After all, this is a 'primer,' not a dignified postgraduate treatise. The Springer Series in Cognitive Development contains two basic types of books, namely, edited collections of original chapters by several authors, and original volumes written by one author or a small group of authors. The flagship for the Springer Series will be a serial publication of the 'advances' type, carrying the subtitle Progress in Cognitive Development Research. A group of experts addressed the practical and theoretical psychological and social issues facing pediatric patients and their families when con fronting chronic and severe childhood illnesses including brain damage, cancer, hemophilia, juvenile diabetes, and heart disease. The presentations and group discussions clearly revealed the complexity of physical and psychological problems posed by the seriously ill child with chronic disease for both the health care provider and the family. The conference proceedings confirm that quality care and treatment for the ill child requires the partici pation of a variety of health care disciplines representing diverse fields of knowledge. Pediatricians, family practitioners, child psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, psychologists, nutritionists and others all have important collaborative roles to play. M ossbauer Effect Methodology, Volume 6, records the proceedings of the Sixth Symposium on M6ssbauer Effect Methodology. The symposium was sponsored by the New England Nuclear Corporation and concentrated on methodology, applications, and spectroscopy, with special sections on lunar sample work and on standardization and nomenclature. The symposium was held at the Palmer House in Chicago on January 25, 1970. Dr. J. C. Walker presided over the after noon and evening sessions. About two hundred participants attended, reflecting the continued importance of and interest in this series. Austin Science Associates, Elron Electronic Industries, High Voltage Engineering Corporation, and Reuter-Stokes Electronic Components Company demonstrated lines of equipment for M6ssbauer work. The usual high degree of interest in the well-designed commercial instrumentation was evident. The highlight of the symposium was the session on lunar samples. Fortuitously, the timing of the symposium permitted it to provide one ofthe earliest exposures ofthe lunar results to the scientific community. Many papers on other applications were presented, including work on frozen aqueous solutions. Four papers on methodology development made up one session, including reports on a polarized source, on a coincidence technique, and on the use of radio frequency to perturb hyperfine levels. As usual, many of the papers report work in fields remote from basic physics.

It was she, the daughter of England's poet Lord Byron, who translated the work of the Italian mathematician L.F. Menabrea, attaching her own scientific commentaries on the dissimilarities between the difference engine and the analytical engine. It was Lady Lovelace, the great lady of computers, who delivered the notes and loosely organized writings of Babbage, with her own invaluable amendments, to a world not quite ready to receive them. The Ada language effort has employed hundreds, if not thousands, of minds and a healthy sum of money since its conception. Ada was fostered by the High Order Language Working Group (HOLWG), chartered by the U.S. Department of Defense in January of 1975 with the overall objective of developing a systematic approach to improved use of software by the military. One would think the Pentagon an unlikely foster parent for a new computer language. Regardless of its lineage, the question that begs asking is, of course - Why The answer is by no means a simple one, but some brief background may help to clarify the matter. At present, the Department of Defense is the largest software consumer on earth, employing roughly 400 different computer languages and dialects. The situation, some have commented, is at best untidy.

This was due primarily to protracted legal proceedings challenging the death penalty on constitutional grounds. After much Sturm und Drang, the Supreme Court of the United States, by a divided vote, finally decided that 'the death penalty does not invariably violate the Cruel and Unusual Punishment Clause of the Eighth Amendment.' The Court's decisions, however, do not moot the controversy about the death penalty or render this excellent book irrelevant. The ball is now in the court of the Legislature and the Executive. Leg islatures, federal and state, can impose or abolish the death penalty, within the guidelines prescribed by the Supreme Court. A Chief Executive can commute a death sentence. And even the Supreme Court can change its mind, as it has done on many occasions and did, with respect to various aspects of the death penalty itself, durlog the moratorium period. Also, the people can change their minds. Some time ago, a majority, according to reliable polls, favored abolition. Today, a substantial majority favors imposition of the death penalty. The pendulum can swing again, as it has done in the past.

Mossbauer Effect Methodology, Volume 8, records the proceedings of the Eighth Symposium on Mossbauer Effect Methodology. The symposium was sponsored by the New England Nuclear Corporation, with emphasis on application and some attention to spectroscopy and methodology. The Symposium was held in the Mercury Ballroom of the New York Hilton on January 28, 1973. Dr. J. J. Zuckerman presided over the afternoon and evening sessions. Almost two hundred participants attended, despite the pressures of travel budget limitations, indicating a continuing high level of interest in the field. Contri buting Sponsors were Austin Science Associates, Elron, Nuclear Science Instruments and Ranger Electronics. The MOssbauer equipment demonstrated by these organizations continued to evolve and improve year by year, and was well received by symposium participants. A one-year break in the symposium series resulted in submission of a very large number of papers. A Selection Committee was formed and selected 16 papers for inclusion in the symposium. Regrettably, many worthwhile papers could not be included. Applications were stressed.

It is written for the empirically oriented psychotherapist, regardless of his or her discipline, who encounters patients with marital discord and has been distressed by the absence of an acceptable conceptual model for treatment. Psychoanalysis, behavior therapy, general system theory, and social learning theory have all made important contributions to treatment. But all too often these approaches have focused either on individual psychopathology or on the formal elements of marital interaction. This volume is the first to propose an approach to marital therapy which is clinically sophisticated, empirically based and which integrates important elements of seemingly disparate theoretical systems. The result is a cognitive-behavioral model for the treatment of marital discord which borrows from both psychoanalytic and behavioral contributions by translating them into the language of cognitive social psychology. Yet in order to successfully promote the use of biodegradable pesticides, one must fully understand the mechanism of degradation, and it is to this vital subject that we address ourselves in the present volume. According to the Biodegradation Task Force, Safety of Chemicals Com mittee, Brussels (1978), biodegradation may be defined as the molecular degradation of an organic substance resulting from the complex action of living organisms. A substance is said to be biodegraded to an environmentally acceptable extent when environmentally undesirable properties are lost. Loss of some characteristic function or property of substance by biodegradation may be referred to as biological transformation.
