Human aging, a complex biological process, has long eluded a unified explanation. The book explains that aging is fundamentally a cellular energy crisis, driven by the progressive accumulation of damage to the vulnerable DNA of mitochondria, the cell's primary energy producers. Drawing on this perspective, which emphasizes energy conservation and flow in biological systems, new light is cast on the traditional theories of aging, demonstrating that the recognized 'Hallmarks of Aging' are all downstream consequences of the fundamental energy falloff. While currently available longevity interventions offer modest, short-term benefits that address some aging symptoms, none can resolve this underlying energy shortage. The path to true age reversal requires the application of strong measures, primarily the new technology of high-volume mitochondrial transplantation. The Age Reversal Revolution is about to shake the foundations of our civilization, and this book provides the key to understanding it and joining in its benefits. 177 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This Open access book explores the connections between everyday life, institutional politics, and social hierarchies that underlie the disputes between progressive forces and the radical right. It studies the case of Brazil, which is especially suggestive, given the particular combination of political choices and variables of class, gender, race, region and religion as well as the different transitions in a short period of time. The book's central thesis is that political choices reflect the potential of different political discourses whether from the left or the (extreme) right to articulate sufferings, anxieties, and expectations generated by shifts in peoples intersectional situation. Starting from this perspective, it studies how both institutional politics and real and virtual everyday spaces have been transformed into arenas where those who have lost or fear losing privileges and positions confront those who have gained or hope to gain new rights and standing within existing hierarchies. The book combines timely themes and approaches: critical research on social inequalities, relations between capitalism and democracy, political activism. Politically, it presents a comprehensive diagnosis of the advance of the far right and can contribute to nurturing progressive strategies to react to these threats. Although based on cutting-edge theoretical debates, the book is written in easily accessible language that can be understood by a broad readership. 123 pp. Englisch.

Permeability stands as a pivotal parameter in assessing the permeability or transport capacity of tight reservoirs, exerting a significant influence on the extraction of reservoir resources. Laboratory experiments on permeability serve as a crucial means to understand the intrinsic permeability of shale. However, the permeability of shale is exceedingly low and is susceptible to influences from various experimental factors such as gas adsorption, ambient temperature, and testing apparatus. The precise measurement of shale permeability remains one of the challenges that perplex researchers and designers. This book aims to address the following key issues: permeability measurement methods that take into account the effects of adsorption, and the measurement of anisotropic permeability in rocks. 115 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book explores the varying effects of wildfire on individuals, families, communities, and governments as local and State agencies in California grapple with the realities of recovery. The field of wildfire recovery is an industry in design. Policies, procedures, and funding rules and regulations for recovery change with each disaster, which means there is no predictability, capacity-building, nor system/design being built in California as communities are destroyed/impacted by fire. Even in Butte County, impacted by 12 federally declared disasters in the past 10 years and home to the deadliest and most destructive fire in State history, each recovery process requires the application of different requirements which prolongs recovery and, as a result, suffering.Because of this, recovery adds hardship to the trauma of fire which erodes the ability of professionals and agencies to be effective. This book offers insights and examples of these hardships for the purpose of exposing the inconsistencies and misalignments within State and federal policy that suppress recovery, and recommendations to adopt new definitions and approaches that cut down on complexity and begin to frame up industry design. There is a better way!The book outlines the ways in which State and federal agencies can codify and localize their approaches to wildfire recovery, beginning to parse out the differences between recovering from an urban fire and rural wildland fire, and key recovery pace and scale indicators such as ownership versus renting, municipal infrastructure versus wells/septic, insurability/underinsurance. There are highly defined and practiced approaches to response and early recovery, and this book proposes to use a similar approach for long-term recovery design so professionals enter a known, defined, but adaptive-in-the-moment field. What makes this book distinctive is acknowledging the thread of trauma throughout fire, aftermath, and recovery. Trauma is the inconvenient truth of wildfire, unavoidable and destructive in its own right. Recovery professionals are subject to secondary trauma through working directly with survivors through the hardship of recovery programs. Wildfire trauma complicates family and friend relationships in a myriad of ways because, community wide, the source of trauma is the same but the impacts are different. Trauma can be the single reason an individual fails to recover when, time after time, resources and support are offered and refused. By not acknowledging trauma in the workplace after disaster, burnout and resentment are difficult to name and address. Using a trauma-informed approach, or just building awareness about what trauma looks like after wildfire, consultants and recovery professionals can reduce or at least neutralize the hardship individuals and communities experience during long-term recovery. 194 pp. Englisch.

These nebular nurseries have incubated all the stars, planetary systems, and many of the complex molecules known to humanity. From there, the myriad of planets in orbit around their hosting stars have further refined the organic matter into even more complex biochemicals. On the surface of one particularly moist planet, life took hold, and evolutionary processes led to you and me collectively pondering the wonders of galactic ecosystems via this book.Given the seminal role of galactic ecosystems in hosting this tale of being and becoming, it is necessary to consider the full sweep of cosmic scales. In this book, we will explore atomic nuclei and their alchemic transmutations within stars, the assembly of atoms into molecules within cryogenic clouds, and prospects for building up the macromolecules necessary for life as we know it. On a much larger scale, we will discover protostars and protoplanetary disks inside molecular cloud cores a few light-years in size, their hosting molecular clouds tens of light-years across, giant molecular clouds and ionized nebulae hundreds of light-years in extent, and finally entire starburst galaxies spanning thousands of light-years.Along the way, we will gain an appreciation for the most massive, powerful, and short-lived stars as they transform their natal environments via their intense radiation, winds, and explosive deaths. Without the elemental beneficence of these stars, rocky planets, water, and life itself would be impossible.Through reading this book, you will obtain a better understanding of your birthright as a child of the cosmos. As with all lifeforms on Earth, and likely myriad of other lifeforms on worlds yet to be explored, this sense of communion pervades the cosmos, made visceral through the awesome creativity of galactic ecosystems. 213 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book examines the forgotten proposal to make Constantinople the headquarters of the League of Nations after the First World War, in order to rethink the origins of modern international order. By tracing the debate between liberal internationalism and Western imperialism, it shows how global governance was shaped by power, geography, and ideology rather than universal principles. The author argues that the choice of Geneva as the League s seat was not a neutral administrative decision, but a deeply political one. Focusing on the years from 1919 to 1920, the book reconstructs a critical moment when two competing visions of world order collided: the first, an inclusive, post-imperial internationalism advanced by figures such as David Davies, versus an imperial internationalism championed by policy-makers and the likes of Jan Smuts and Robert Henry Brand. At stake was whether the League would emerge as a genuinely global institution or as a reconfigured instrument of Western dominance. Drawing on pamphlets, Peace Conference minutes, parliamentary debates, and archival sources, the book offers a new perspective on postwar diplomacy, the League of Nations, and the spatial politics of international institutions. 108 pp. Englisch.

Añadir al carritoBuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book examines how older adults with physical disabilities living at home develop dietary resilience strategies to maintain independence, agency, and dignity in later life. Drawing on extensive theoretical literature and rich qualitative research with home dwelling older adults, it analyses how people adapt to food related challenges associated with ageing (such as declining health, mobility limitations, sensory changes, financial constraints, retirement, widowhood, and social isolation) and how they mobilise personal, social, and cultural resources to sustain meaningful eating practices.Grounded in a robust conceptual framework that integrates gerontology, the life course perspective, nutritional science, gender studies, and the anthropology of food, the book reframes dietary resilience as a multidimensional process shaped not only by biological or nutritional needs but also by identity, cultural continuity, social relationships, and everyday experiences of agency. It reveals how older adults adapt recipes and routines, diversify food sources, reorganise kitchen environments, rely on supportive networks, practise mindful eating, and preserve pleasure and ritual in ways that reinforce autonomy and well being despite physical limitations. A key contribution of the book is its attention to gendered life histories and foodwork, showing how men and women draw on different forms of knowledge, social capital, and embodied experience to negotiate changing capabilities and roles in later life.Short yet comprehensive, the book foregrounds the sense of security and independence that food provides in old age and highlights strength based strategies through which older adults maintain quality of life. It concludes with practical implications for researchers, professionals, and caregivers seeking to support autonomy, culturally meaningful nutrition, and dignified ageing. 161 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book aims to reflect critically on a great deal of HCI research conducted with or concerned about older adults and aging with the goal of sparking future development of the field. To that end, the book offers a critical literature review, which is informed by more than a decade of the author s own empirical work, of 30 years of research in HCI and related areas, including STS, sociology, the psychology of aging, and gerontology. Four key aspects are addressed: (1) conceptualization of older adults, aging, and technology, (2) progress in knowledge generation in HCI and aging, (3) conducting research methods with older adults, and (4) designing technologies for aging. To accomplish this, the book starts by considering the diversity and intersectionality of the older adult population of technology users and its implications for effectively applying HCI research methodologies. It critiques the tendency within HCI studies of solely conceptualizing aging as a problem, one that has a technological solution, and preoccupation with user deficits related to health and age-related declines in functional abilities. The book proposes a significant need for a horizontal body of knowledge in the field that is stymied by individuated development practices that start from scratch with their considerations of the older adult population for each new technology or application. This book calls on researchers to consider novel techniques without overlooking the need to deepen and widen a transversal knowledge base that helps the field progress further and produce technologies that ultimately better serve all users. 152 pp. Englisch.

It examines how various legal regimes are already adapting to the challenges posed by the ecological crisis and where legal systems are under increasing pressure to change.Through a series of thematic chapters, the book identifies and analyses internal legal, political, ideological, and regulatory tensions that characterize the process of adaptation. These include conflicts between legality and environmental protection, the limits of legal frameworks in addressing transnational green capital flows, and the challenges of reconciling legal certainty with ecological imperatives. This volume maps the paths that law is already taking sometimes deliberately, sometimes reactively within the transition. Particular attention is given to how legal structures are shaped by competing visions of justice, growth, and sustainability, as well as the potential for legal thought to evolve in alignment with ecological principles. 144 pp. Englisch.

It provides empirical analyses of these media as digital environments which shape news distribution, advertising practices, and interpersonal communication. Drawing on interdisciplinary research from media studies, computer science, and communication, the book separates evidence-based insights from widespread folk theories about big tech companies and their role in society. By focusing on structural changes introduced by algorithmic mediation, this work contributes to ongoing discussions about digital literacy, regulation of big tech, and the future of democratic discourse. The structural focus also provides theoretical insights regarding dispersed gatekeeping roles in algorithmic media environments, the communication dynamics surrounding enshittification, and emerging forms of digital capital in the age of influencers. Overall, the book offers a pragmatic perspective toward the rapidly-evolving digital communication environment, emphasizing human agency and the potential for more purposeful engagement with algorithmic media. 168 pp. Englisch.

It uncovers the deeper socioeconomic, political, and cultural forces that have shaped one of the most devastating public health emergencies in modern U.S. history. Through clear analysis and compelling evidence, it challenges readers to reconsider what they think they know and why conventional narratives fall short.Moving seamlessly across disciplines, the book draws from econometrics, qualitative fieldwork, spatial modeling, and socioecological theory to illuminate the structural and place-based contexts in which addiction takes root. It exposes how declining economic opportunity, eroding social cohesion, regulatory contradictions, and distorted media portrayals have interacted to produce widespread vulnerability. Each chapter reveals overlooked mechanisms, from the consequences of free market healthcare to the lived experiences of stigma, trauma, and marginalization.Offering more than critique, the book charts a path forward. Through case studies, innovative prevention frameworks, and community centered solutions, it outlines a prevention approach focused on addressing root causes rather than symptoms. The result is a vital, multidimensional resource for policymakers, researchers, practitioners, and anyone seeking a deeper, more actionable understanding of the opioid crisis and the systemic change required to end it. 230 pp. Englisch.

These concepts indicate the unconditioned condition and the empirical-formal universe that truth unilaterally conditions, respectively. Indeed, truth conditions the empirical-formal universe without being conditioned by it. It is argued that the reduction of truth to various theories explaining its empirical use has led to the unconditioned nature of truth itself being lost. But if truth is not grasped for its absolute value, it is reduced to relation. The book aims to show that the concept of relation if understood as a static construct of two terms and a nexus is a contradictory construct, since it reconciles the irreconcilable: dependence and independences of the related terms. Thus, only insofar as truth is absolute is it authentic truth, because it does not depend on anything else, but is autonomous and self-sufficient. Indeed, if truth were not absolute, it would be determined and, as such, would be defined by a limit that would place it in relation to something other than itself, i.e. non-truth. But this is contradictory as it would make truth reliant on what is not truth. Instead, no determination can ground itself: the circle of referring that requires the determination to refer beyond itself cannot be the ground, because it configures nothing other than an infinite regress. In conclusion, the book shows that truth has to be understood not only as the end of a quest, but also as its condition, since it is only in virtue of absolute truth that the inadequacy and therefore the unintelligibility of all that is finite or relative are recognised.Truth and Relation is essential reading for all scholars, researchers and advanced students of philosophy and, in particular, of metaphysics and epistemology. 98 pp. Englisch.

It combines political economy, institutional analysis, and cultural critique with unusual clarity and ambition.' Costas Lapavitsas, University of LondonDemocratic Alternatives investigates the intersection of social democracy, market socialism, and the radical critique of the Situationist International. While the Situationists rejected reformism outright, their analysis of alienation, commodification, and the spectacle provides a powerful lens for evaluating institutional reforms in contemporary capitalism. This book argues that policies such as universal basic income, reduction of the working day, participatory urbanism, and cooperative management of resources though not revolutionary in themselves can open cracks in the dominant logic of capital. Drawing on a novel analytical framework, the book evaluates reforms through Situationist categories such as decommodification, autonomy, spatial reappropriation, and détournement of institutions. Two case studies Iceland s working-time reduction experiment and the Mondragón cooperative movement illustrate both the transformative potential and risks of co-optation. The book positions itself between the intransigent legacy of the Situationists and the practical necessity of reform, arguing for non-reformist reforms that create conditions for social experimentation, creativity, and political participation. Written with academic rigor and critical sensitivity, it offers scholars, students, and activists a methodological tool to assess when and how reforms may contribute to a post-spectacular society. 148 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This Brief provides a detailed exploration of a modified 'escalation ladders' model as applied to state-sponsored targeted killings in the post-Cold War political landscape. Using a modified version of Herman Kahn's 'ladders of escalation,' the authors offer a systematic comparison of the components and features of multiple state-sponsored killing programs. The Brief begins with a historical overview of the creation of escalations ladders in the 1950s and 1960s, their original applications in conflicts between nuclear superpowers, and their discontinuation in the wake of the end of the Cold War. The second part illustrates how the modified Ladders of Escalation model can be utilized in various national intelligence agencies, through international case studies: Russia, Israel, the United States, India, and France. In the third section, the authors draw parallels between the models, ending with further discussion on how Ladders of Escalation can support, or even improve, current intelligence practices. Providing a new and valuable theoretical framework for analyzing political violence, this Brief will be of interest to scholars and students of international relations, critical security studies, intelligence studies, as well as intelligence professionals and human rights practitioners. 116 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book offers a groundbreaking psychological exploration of how religion influences sport performance, motivation, injury recovery, and interpersonal dynamics in athletic settings. Bridging sport psychology and religious studies, it introduces two original models the Religion and Sport Performance (RSP) Model and the Religious Psychological Adaptation to Sports Injury (RPASI) Model to explain how faith shapes athletes' cognitive, emotional, and behavioral responses on and off the field. Rather than treating religion as a cultural backdrop, the book positions it as a powerful psychological force that can enhance concentration, resilience, and identity. Drawing on diverse religious traditions and supported by real-world case examples, it examines how athletes integrate prayer, ritual, and belief into performance preparation and injury recovery. It also explores how religion influences team dynamics, coach-athlete relationships, and ethical decision-making in multicultural sport contexts. This concise yet comprehensive book is ideal for sport psychologists, coaches, researchers, and undergraduate and graduate students interested in the intersection of mental performance and religious belief. It offers both theoretical insight and practical guidance for applying religion-informed psychological strategies in sport environments. 96 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This open access book explores the story of early modern Swedish sailors and merchants captured and enslaved in the North African territory then known as Barbary (Algeria, Libya, Tunisia, and Morocco), and the efforts of their families, communities, and consuls to ransom them. Swedes were a minority among the Spaniards, Italians, Frenchmen, and British who were carried off. For that reason, Swedish authorities were initially unaware of their suffering; however, as the losses of men increased and awareness of their plight grew, it became a huge concern for Sweden s long-distance trade, particularly the import of salt essential for food preservation in the long winter months from Southern Europe.By studying the Swedish experience of encountering Barbary, the book illustrates how a small Lutheran state navigated global interests. This volume studies letters from captured and enslaved Swedish sailors and how this correspondence played a pivotal role in shaping slave narratives and by extension Swedish identity. The book also examines these letters social impact on local communities at home, the political pressure they exerted on government officials, and their cultural significance among intellectuals. In addition, the study highlights how Swedish consuls became integrated into the local power elite in North Africa, which facilitated diplomatic negotiations and opened up opportunities for commerce, including participation in the transport and trade of African slaves. 364 pp. Englisch.
