In reality, the transition is gradual and a tiny fraction of the atmophere gases is still present at the altitude of low orbiting satellites. The very high velocit…ies of these satellites ensure that their orbital motion can still be considerably affected by air density and wind. This influence can be measured using accelerometers and satellite tracking techniques.The opening chapters of this thesis provide an excellent introduction to the various disciplines that are involved in the interpretation of these observations: orbital mechanics, satellite aerodynamics and upper atmospheric physics. A subsequent chapter, at the heart of this work, covers advances in the algorithms used for processing satellite accelerometry and Two-Line Element (TLE) orbit data. The closing chapters provide an elaborate analysis of the resulting density and wind products, which are generating many opportunities for further research, to improve the modelling and understanding of the thermosphere system and its interactions with the lower atmosphere, the ionosphere-magnetosphere system and the Sun. 200 pp. Englisch.

The in vestigations consist of a literature search and - depending on the results - commissions of experimental studies. It is hoped by means of this testing to close gaps in our know ledge and to increase the scientific validity of the required risk assessments. The results of the toxicological in vestigations carried out by BG Chemie, and the resulting substance assessments have been published in German since 1987 in the form of 132 'Toxikologische Bewer tungen' ('Toxicological Evaluations') up to now. In order to make this useful information internation ally available, BG Chemie began in October 1990 to pub lish them as a book series in English, of which the sixth volume (containing 11 individual evaluations) is presented here. Therefore for 83 existing chemicals 'Toxicological Evaluations' are available in English at the moment, a fur ther 27 are in preparation and will be published soon.

Bei der Abfassung dieses Buches habe ich dieses Ziel vor Augen gehalten. Aus der auBerordentlich reichen Literatur der Erddrucktheo rien konnten aber selbstredend nur jene Ergebnisse behandelt werden, die sowohl in theoretischer wie auch praktischer Hinsicht gleichfalls hervorzuheben sind. Vollstandigkeit habe ich nicht angestrebt - ich wollte dies auch nicht tun. Das Problem des Erddruckes auf biegsame Spundwande habe ich zum Beispiel nicht erwahnt, zumal die neueste deutsche Fachliteratur auf diesem Gebiet besonders reichhaltig ist. Der Leser wird im Buch alte und neue Erddrucktheorien und -methoden vor finden, die ich mit fachlicher Hingabe, mit viel Kopfzerbrechen, aber auch mit wahrer Freude beschrieben habe; ich trachtete danach, die Ansatze, die theoretischen Grundlagen in einfacher und iibersichtlicher Form zu bringen und den Anwendungsbereich iiberall klar a'Jzugrenzen. After the publication of the 'White Paper' (1985) on the completion o…f the internal European market, an intense and heated debate about tax impediments to free trade set in. According to the original plans of the Commission of the European Union, not only physical border controls but also fiscal frontiers within the European Union would have been abolished on New Year's Day 1993. With respect to value added taxation this amounted to replacing the destination by the origin principle. Even though the origin principle had been favored by some economists from the establishment of a common European value-added tax system, time was not yet ripe for this change. In December 1991, the ECOFIN Council could only agree on the so called transitional system. In essence, these transitional arrangements maintain the destination principle as far as possible but shift the border tax procedure from national frontiers to firms. The transitional system is supposed to expire on December 31, 1996, with the final solution for value-added taxation in the European Union being decided upon by the ECOFIN Council until December, 1995. In the event of no decision the transitional arrangements will be continued. The most likely solution will be a switch to the origin principle combined with some clearing mechanism to prevent major revenue reallocations between member states. 252 pp. Englisch.
