The rst Fast Software Encryption Workshop was held in C…ambridge in 1993, followed by Leuven in 1994, Cambridge in 1996, Haifa in 1997, Paris in 1998, Rome in 1999, and New York in 2000. This Fast Software Encryption Workshop, FSE 2001, was held from 2-4 April 2001 in Yokohama, Japan, in cooperation with the Institute of Industrial Science, of the University of Tokyo. This year a total of 46 papers were submitted to FSE 2001. After a t- month review process, 27 papers were accepted for presentation at the workshop. In addition, we were fortunate to be able to organize a special talk by Bart Preneel on the NESSIE project, a European initiative to evaluate cryptographic algorithms. AISC 2002 was the latest in a series of specialized conferences founded by John Campbell and Jacques Calmet with the initial title Arti cial Intelligence and Symbolic Mathematical Computation (AISMC) and later denoted Art- cial Intelligence and Symbolic Computation (AISC). The scope is well de ned by its successive titles. AISMC-1 (1992), AISMC-2 (1994), AISMC-3 (1996), AISC 98, and AISC 2000 took place in Karlsruhe, Cambridge, Steyr, Plattsburgh (NY), and Madrid respectively. The proceedings were published by Springer-Verlag as LNCS 737, LNCS 958, LNCS 1138, LNAI 1476, and LNAI 1930 respectively. Calculemus 2002 was the 10th symposium in a series which started with three meetings in 1996, two meetings in 1997, and then turned into a yearly event in 1998. Since then, it has become a tradition to hold the meeting jointly with an event in either symbolic computation or automated deduction. There may be steps following deployment, such as installation or m- agement related functions, but all decisions about how to con gure and c- pose/asse…mble a component are made at the deployment stage. This is therefore the one opportunity in the software lifecycle to bridge the gap between what the component developer couldn't know about the deployment environment and what the environment's developer couldn't know about the open set of depl- able components. It is not surprising that deployment as a dedicated step gains importance when addressing issues of system-wide qualities, such as coping with constrained resources or preparing for component adaptation and system evolution. Yet, component deployment is still a discipline in its infancy: it became mainstream practice only in the mid 1990s. Much of the best practice impulse originated in products like Microsoft's Transaction Server and its approach to attribute-based programming and later products like Enterprise JavaBeans and now the Corba Component Model. All these address the speci c needs of enterprise appli- tion servers. However, the potential of the deployment concept goes far beyond this. They were selected from 37 abstracts s- mitted in… response to the call for papers. In addition, there were invited lectures by Shinichi Morishita (University of Tokyo) and Hiroki Arimura (Kyushu U- versity). Combinatorial Pattern Matching (CPM) addresses issues of searching and matching strings and more complicated patterns such as trees, regular expr- sions, graphs, point sets, and arrays, in various formats. The goal is to derive n- trivial combinatorial properties of such structures and to exploit these properties in order to achieve superior performance for the corresponding computational problems. On the other hand, an important goal is to analyze and pinpoint the properties and conditions under which searches cannot be performed e ciently. Over the past decade a steady ow of high-quality research on this subject has changed a sparse set of isolated results into a full- edged area of algorithmics. This area is continuing to grow even further due to the increasing demand for speed and e ciency that stems from important applications such as the World Wide Web, computational biology, computer vision, and multimedia systems. These involve requirements for information retrieval in heterogeneous databases, data compression, and pattern recognition. Our idea was that mathematicians could contribute to solving problems in the emerging applied disciplines usually overlooked by them and that specialists from applied sciences could pose new challenges for multiscale problems. Numerous problems in natural sciences contain multiple scales: flows in complex heterogeneous media, many particles systems, composite media, etc. Mathematically, we are led to study of singular homogenisation limits and the procedure is called upscaling or homogenisation. The processes to be up scaled are usually described by differential equations. For simple cases, when the differential equation is linear and the heterogeneities are periodic some progress has been made. However, most natural phenomena are described by nonlinear differential equations in a random nonhomogeneous medium and, despite an intensive development in recent years, there are many open problems. The objective of the conference was to bring together leading special ists from Europe and the United States and to discuss new challenges in this quickly developing field. Topics of the conference were Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations and Applied Analysis, with direct applications to the modeling in Material Sciences, Petroleum Engineering and Hydrodynamics. 328 pp. Englisch.

It is in large part devoted to an adaptive form of IS that has proved to be effective in appli cation…s that involve the estimation of probabilities of rare events. Rare events are often encountered in scientific and engineering processes. Their charac terization is especially important as their occurrence can have catastrophic consequences of varying proportions. Examples range from fracture due to material fatigue in engineering structures to exceedance of dangerous levels during river water floods to false target declarations in radar systems. Fast simulation using IS is essentially a forced Monte Carlo procedure designed to hasten the occurrence of rare events. Development of this simu lation method of analysis of scientific phenomena is usually attributed to the mathematician von Neumann, and others. Since its inception, MC simula tion has found a wide range of employment, from statistical thermodynamics in disordered systems to the analysis and design of engineering structures characterized by high complexity. Indeed, whenever an engineering problem is analytically intractable (which is often the case) and a solution by nu merical techniques prohibitively expensive computationally, a last resort to determine the input-output characteristics of, or states within, a system is to carry out a simulation. 260 pp. Englisch.
