The walls of the ventricular system in the brain show regional specializations termed circumventricular organs. Despite the fact that these organs have been sufficiently described morphologically, a convincing functional concept is lacking, especially in rela tion to adjacent nervous centers and to the cerebrospinal fluid. In vitro experimenta tion allows isolated analysis of circumventricular organs without interaction of other neuronal or humoral influences. Three avian circumventricular organs were selected for the present in vitro study: 1. choroid plexus, 2. glycogen body, and 3. pineal organ, all having the advantage of being anatomically well defined and therefore suited-for clean and easy isolation. Each of these represents an individual case with special prob-' lems for study in organ or cell culture. 1.1. Choroid Plexus In cultures of the choroid plexus the lack of vascular supply eliminates an important functional component which determines in vivo the polar organization of the plexus epithelium. Therefore, tissue culture studies are limited to processes occurring at the apical surface of the cell and focussed on the interaction between the cell and the culture medium. Choroid plexus from the lateral ventricles of 18 day-old chick em bryos were cultured successfully for up to 120 days in medium 199. Summary 1. After gastrectomy or vagotomy with pyloroplasty the reflux of bile acids and lysolecithin increased. 2. The highest values of reflux were observed in the retrocolic (short loop) B-II anastomosis. The different types of B-I an trectomy and the antecolic B-II with Braun's enterostomy have each the same reflux, which is significantly lower than the re trocolic B~II. Even these types of gastrectomy have 6 - 10-fold elevated reflux values compared to the controls. After vagotomy with pyloroplasty the reflux was reduced to two or three times normal. At the vascular pole of the renal corpuscle, granulated and nongranulated epithelioid cells, Goormaghtigh's cells and mesangial cells, as well as adjacent smooth muscle cells, are all connected to each other. Due to their fine structure, their topographical conti nuity, and the numerous gradual stages of transformation, the different components of the vascular wall are defined as ramified smooth muscle cells (epithelioid cells), which are separated from typical smooth muscle cells of glomerular arterioles. The modified smooth muscle cells show not only numerous cytoplasmic processes, but also many plasmalemmal infoldings. In some areas, these exhibit a spiny differentiation similar to that of coated vesicles. Particles of condensed material resembling basal lamina are often found in the tubular and lamellar indentations of granulated epithe lioid cells. The mechanism of release of secretory granules and the mode of secretion via coated vesicles is discussed. Using exogeneous protein horseradish peroxidase to mark the extracellular space, gap junctions between all types of cells of the vascular wall may be seen. The ICR technique was developed very rapidly in the last two decades. It seems to the editors that the method is now established well enough to dedicate a progress report to it. This report is devided into three parts: The first articles pre sent new developments in the theory of ICR spectrometry. They are fol~ lowed by papers on r.ecent developments of the experimental technique. Neuware -In spite of old vintage and 200 years of clinical use, digitalis remains an interesting therapeutic agent, to clinicians as well as to the pharmacologist, the biochemist, and colleagues in other diciplines of theoretic medicine. When a drug, however, has so many attractive facets, it seems proper and aJvis able for the success of a scientific meeting to focus on a number of well-defined aspects. This symposium was devoted to pharmacokinetics, drug metabolism, analytic procedures, blood level determinations, and their interpretation both for thera peutic and toxic situations. Considerable progress has been made during the last years in this area of digitalis research. The time was suitable for a critical reap praisal of facts and theories and for future planning. Our main intention was to relate analytic data and biochemical findings to clinical problems and questions. Despite the undoubtedly basic character of clinical pharmacology, it is neverthe less an applied science which should help to develop the rational basis of thera peutics. We are particularly grateful to the active participants who bore the burden of preparing presentations and - even worse - manuscripts. At the same time we are well-aware that many other active research groups would have been able to contribute in this way, but our program was limited because of the short time available.
