Thirdly, the - lution to War eld¿s problem shows interesting behavior, a rare phenomenon in the history of Krull-Schmidt type theorems. Essentially, the Krull-Schmidt Theorem holds for some classes of modules and not for others. When it does hold, any two indecomposable decompositions are uniquely determined up to a permutation, and when it does not hold for a class of modules, this is proved via an example. Large-scale catastrophies in the forest biomes were mainly caused by abiotic environmental alterations, the small-scale disturbances were and still are related to both biotic and abiotic processes. The speed of tropical deforestation and savannization is dramatically increasing. Da sich nach der Meinung des Verfassers diese friihzeitige Aufsplitterung und getrennte Begriffsentwick lung, neben einem oft anzutreffenden Mangel an Vorkenntnissen in den Hilfs wissenschaften, ungiinstig ausgewirkt hat, muBte ein neuer Darstellungs versuch unternommen werden. In ihm hatten auch die meist wenig beriick sichtigten geophysikalischen Grundlagen Platz zu finden, was dem Verfasser dank der Mitarbeit seines Sohnes, Prof. ERNST NIGGLI (Leiden), der fast aile Abschnitte von Tei! IV entwarf oder ausarbeitete, moglich war. Ein von den Behorden der Eidgenossischen Technischen Hochschule be willigter Beitrag gestattete, alle Figuren neu zu entwerfen. E. DAL VESCO und W. Jahrhundert wird man den Namen Faulhaber ver geblich suchen, obwohl Johannes Faulhaber immer wieder, wenn auch nur bei einigen Spezialisten wie den Mathematikern C. G. J. Jacobi und A. F. Mobius aufgrund seiner mathematischen Lei stungen Interesse zu erwecken vermochte. Dennoch gibt es in den Faulhaber-Biographien, die seit dem 18. Jahrhundert zu meist in Ulm und Umgebung, der Heimat Faulhabers, erschienen sind, bislang keine angemessene oder gar vollstandige Wurdigung seines mathematischen Werks. Eine solche Wurdigung erscheint aus verschiedenen Grunden wunschenswert. Die mathematischen Entdeckungen Faulhabers sind nicht nur gemessen an den Lei stungen deutscher Mathematiker des 16.
