More then 150 Scientists from 16 countries participated in the meeting, among them mathematicians, engi neers, and ph…ysicists. A broad spectrum of new results on bifurcation was covered by 49 talks. The diversity of the range of treated topics and of involved fields inspired fruitful discussions. 36 refereed papers are contained in these proceedings. The subjects covered treat bifurcation problems, ranging from theoretical investigations to numerical results, with emphasis placed upon applications. The more theoreti cal papers include the topics symmetry breaking, delay differential equations, Cornu spirals, homoclinic orbits, and selfsimilarity. Different kinds of bifurcations are treated: Hopf bifurcation, bifurcation from continuous spec trum, complex bifurcation, and bifurcation near tori. Several numerical as pects are discussed, among them continuation, block elimination, and spectral methods. Algorithms are proposed for approximating manifolds, calculating pe riodic solutions and handling multi-parameter problems. Ample space is devoted to applications. Classical phenomena from fluid mechanics (such as convection rolls and th~ Taylor vortex problem), buckling, and reaction-diffusion pro blems are considered. Other applications of bifurcations include railway vehicle dynamics, computer graphics, semiconductors, drilling processes, simu lation of oil reservoirs, and rotor dynamics. The proceedings reflect current research in bifurcation. First, the solution of a problem posed by Wolfgang Krull in 1932 is presented. He asked whether what is now called the 'Krull-Schmidt Theorem' holds for artinian modules. A neg…ative answer was published only in 1995 by Facchini, Herbera, Levy and Vámos. Second, the answer to a question posed by Warfield in 1975, namely, whether the Krull-Schmidt-Theorem holds for serial modules, is described. Facchini published a negative answer in 1996. The solution to the Warfield problem shows an interesting behavior; in fact, it is a phenomena so rare in the history of Krull-Schmidt type theorems that its presentation to a wider mathematical audience provides the third incentive for this monograph. Briefly, the Krull-Schmidt-Theorem holds for some, not all, classes of modules. When it does hold, any two indecomposable decompositions are uniquely determined up to one permutation. For serial modules the theorem does not hold, but any two indecomposable decompositions are uniquely determined up to two permutations.Apart from these issues, the book addresses various topics in module theory and ring theory, some now considered classical (such as Goldie dimension, semiperfect rings, Krull dimension, rings of quotients, and their applications) and others more specialized (such as dual Goldie dimension, semilocal endomorphism rings, serial rings and modules, exchange property, (sigma)-pure-injective modules). Open problems conclude the work.--------Besides its research value, this book is a considerable addition to the list of fundamental books in rings and modules. Shafarevich's public image suffered a terrible blow around 1989 when he was decried as a dangerous ideologue of anti-Semitism due to his newly-surfaced old manuscript Russophobia . The scandal culminated when the President of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States suggested that Shafarevich, an honorary member, resign. Da sich nach der Meinung des Verfassers diese friihzeitige Aufsplitterung und getrennte Begriffsentwick lung, neben einem oft anzutreffenden Mangel an Vorkenntnissen in den Hilfs wissenschaften, ungiinstig ausgewirkt hat, muBte ein neuer Darstellungs versuch unternommen werden. In ihm hatten auch die meist wenig beriick sichtigten geophysikalischen Grundlagen Platz zu finden, was dem Verfasser dank der Mitarbeit seines Sohnes, Prof. ERNST NIGGLI (Leiden), der fast aile Abschnitte von Tei! IV entwarf oder ausarbeitete, moglich war. Ein von den Behorden der Eidgenossischen Technischen Hochschule be willigter Beitrag gestattete, alle Figuren neu zu entwerfen. E. DAL VESCO und W. SANSONE sowie die ftir uns interessanten Teile des 'Bateman Project' beschaftigen sich in erster Linie mit den speziellen Orthogonalpolynomen. Die Monographie von JA. L. GERONIMUS he handelt ausschlieBlich die Szegosche Theorie. Es fehIte eine zeitgemaBe nbersicht der allgemeinen Theorle der Orthogonalpolynome. lch hoffe, mit meinem Buch diese Lucke ausftillen zu konnen. Dnter 'allgemeine Theorie' sei verstanden, daB aHe Resultate aus den heiden Tatsachen hergeleitet wurden, daB es sich um Polynome handelt, und daB die Folge dieser Polynome beztiglich einer vorgegebenen Belegung ein Ortho gonalsystem bildet. 296 pp. Deutsch.

Jahrhundert wird man den Namen Faulhaber ver geblich suchen, obwohl Johannes Faulhaber immer wieder, wenn auch nur bei einigen Spezialisten wie den Mathematikern C.… G. J. Jacobi und A. F. Mobius aufgrund seiner mathematischen Lei stungen Interesse zu erwecken vermochte. Dennoch gibt es in den Faulhaber-Biographien, die seit dem 18. Jahrhundert zu meist in Ulm und Umgebung, der Heimat Faulhabers, erschienen sind, bislang keine angemessene oder gar vollstandige Wurdigung seines mathematischen Werks. Eine solche Wurdigung erscheint aus verschiedenen Grunden wunschenswert. Die mathematischen Entdeckungen Faulhabers sind nicht nur gemessen an den Lei stungen deutscher Mathematiker des 16. Jahrhunderts heraus ragend, sondern auch im Vergleich zu anderen Errungenschaf ten der Mathematik des 17. Jahrhunderts, das Zeitgenossen als ein Jahrhundert der Mathematik galt, durchaus bemerkenswert. Am auffalligsten und wohl auch von Faulhaber selbst als seine groBte Entdeckung eingeschatzt sind die Summen und hoheren Summen der Potenzen naturlicher Zahlen bis zum Exponenten 17 in Form der heute sogenannten Faulhaberpolynome. Die Re konstruktion des Findungsweges dieser Potenzsummen auf der Grundlage der Faulhaber zuganglichen elementaren Methoden hat Mathematiker bis in die jungste Zeit beschaftigt. 272 pp. Deutsch.
