Neuware - In Harch of 1980, we organized the first symposium on how to evaluate new antiarrhythmic agents in which the participants included members of the Cardio-Renal Division of the Food and Drug Administration, academic investigators from the United States and Abroad and directors and imple mentors of p…harmacological research representing the pharmaceutical industry. By bringing together all three elements, it was hoped that better communication and under standing would ensue to more rapidly bring new cardiac agents to the American public. This goal was important since a rather limited number of antiarrhythmic agents were and are currently available to treat patients with such disorders in the United States. These agents are needed not only for the treatment of patients with sustained ventricular tachyarrhythmias which produce life-threatening hemodynamic consequences but also and in fact more potentially important as a prophylactic measure in the high risk patient subject to sudden cardiac death. This book represents the proceedings of the third of these Symposiums whose purpose was to evaluate the clinical research methodology and models used in the evaluation of ne' antiarrhythmic agents for not only acute therapeutic inter vention but also for the prophylaxis of sudden cardiac death. In addition, new devices have evolved over the past few years that can detect and treat life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias and the evaluation of efficacy and safety of these devices is detailed.

One of these is a book issue dealing with the transglutaminase reaction. The other is this… issue that deals with induction and modulation of enzymes. This is a very broad subject that calls for broader coverage than could be included in one book issue. However, I have elected to include only certain contributions that serve as general examples of the principles involved. There are six articles on enzyme regulation in hepatocyte culture. These include arginase and argino-succi nate synthetase, y-glutamyl transferase and plasminogen activitor. Other regulatory enzymes that are discussed are protein kinases, 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate synthetases, carbamoyl phosphate synthetase, heme oxygenase, cytochrome P-450, tyrosine hydroxylase, fatty acid synthetase, acetyl eoA carboxylase, among others. Also included is the regulation of several enzyme messengers RNAs. As in the past, subscribers to the journal will receive this double volume as a continuation of regular issues of the journal Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry. It was written with the aim of using an important clinica…l problem to illustrate, to medical students, that there are many aspects of the biochemistry taught in the early years which have direct relevance to clinical medicine. Furthermore, it is hoped that such information might provide biochemistry students with a frame work on which to base further studies. In spite of considerable advances in our understanding of diabetes mellitus, it is still a disease which many physicians do not seem to com prehend. This is in part related to their lack of understanding of the molecular biology of the disease. It may be therefore that this book will provide some physicians with the information they require to help them gain a deeper understanding of the disease. This book is devoted to such probl…ems. Their mathematical properties are investi gated and algorithms for their computational solution are presented. Applications are discussed in detail. Linear optimization problems are encountered in many areas of appli cations. They have therefore been subject to mathematical analysis for a long time. We mention here only two classical topics from this area: the so-called uniform approximation of functions which was used as a mathematical tool by Chebyshev in 1853 when he set out to design a crane, and the theory of systems of linear inequalities which has already been studied by Fourier in 1823. We will not treat the historical development of the theory of linear optimization in detail. However, we point out that the decisive break through occurred in the middle of this century. It was urged on by the need to solve complicated decision problems where the optimal deployment of military and civilian resources had to be determined. The availability of electronic computers also played an important role. The principal computational scheme for the solution of linear optimization problems, the simplex algorithm, was established by Dantzig about 1950. In addi tion, the fundamental theorems on such problems were rapidly developed, based on earlier published results on the properties of systems of linear inequalities. 212 pp. Englisch.

In undertaking an American revised translation of their work, it was my hope to meet a need in the English-language literature similar to that met by the German text. I believe that both students and non dermatologic physicians will find this volume a useful introduction to the art and science of treating skin disorders. The practice of dermatology differs from country to country. This text is therefore not simply a translation, but an adaptation that incorporates much new material. In the pages that follow, I have built on the successful framework of the German text, incorporating its excellent photographs and other teaching aids. Discussion of therapy has been extensively revised to reflect current practice in the United States. Original chapters on male infertility and proctology (two dermatologic domains in Germany) are not included in this book. Ecology is, in addition, a rapidly developing subject: new information is being gathered all the time on a variety of key questions; new approaches and techniques open up whole new areas of research and establish new principles. Already things have changed radically since the early '70s and we feel there is a need for an up to date student text that will include some of this newer material. We have tried, therefore, to create a text that will review all the major principles and tenets within the whole field of Ecology, presenting the generally accepted theories and fundamentals and reviewing carefully the evidence on which such principles have been founded.
