Octavo, red illustrated cloth (hardcover), gilt lettering, 258 pp. Near Fine, with tiny ding to upper cover. From Introduction: Ernest Hemingway once said that there is only one great American novel: Huckleberry Finn. Well, if it was good enough for Papa, it's good enough for me. My earliest recollections of my favorite stories were about pirates, which I recounted in my foreword to Treasure Island, the first volume of The Shipwreck Editions. Oh yeah, the pirate stories were full of adventure and excitement, but it always seemed to me that I would have to grow up to be a pirate. Huckleberry Finn, on the other hand, was about people my own age -- kids. I knew kids in my own neighborhood in Mobile, Alabama, who were just like the characters in the book. We had caves and hideouts and tree houses and secret handshakes just like Tom and Huck. We had no Mississippi River flowing through the suburban subdivision of Sunset Hills, but that was the magic of this book. We made it up. In the real world of parents and rules, our raft was nothing more than a few two-by-fours and some corrugated tin lifted in the middle of the night from the construction site at the E. R. Dixon School and nailed together in a haphazard fashion with no thought of design or structure. The most important part of our vessel was not the tiller or keel or superstructure; it was the flagpole from which dangled our skull and crossbones. Our raft plied the protected shallow waters of a spillway from the man-made lake on the Mobile Country golf course. It was a far cry from the Mississippi, and the only reason we were allowed by our parents to play there was because it was shallow, safe and void of water moccasins.
