Añadir al carritoOctavo, blue cloth (hardcover), gilt lettering, xiv, 245 pp. Very Good, with light foxing (age darkened spotting) and former-owner inscription; in a Very Good, mylar protected dust jacket with lightly rubbed edges. From dust jacket: Samuel Proctor -- teacher, author, administrator, editor, preservationist, and oral history pioneer -- was born in Jacksonville, Florida, on March 29, 1919. From his enrollment as a freshman in 1937 at the University of Florida until his retirement in 1996, he had (except for service in World War II) a continuous relationship with that institution. This book's twelve essays stressing Florida's diversity, plus an overview of Professor Proctor's career, are written by Sam's students and colleagues. Edited by Mark I. Greenberg, William Warren Rogers, and Canter Brown, Jr., who are also contributors, the book honors his distinguished career. Professor Proctor has had a major impact on how scholars and the general public perceives Florida, and, by words spoken and written, has done much to preserve the state's history. For example, he edited the Florida Historical Quarterly for thirty years -- from 1963 to 1993. During that time he gave publication access to both seasoned professors and emerging scholars and, building of the work of his predecessors, brought the Quarterly to the front rank of American state journals of history. The essays begin with a discussion of "Marriage and Community Construction in St. Augustine, 1784 - m1804," and end with "The Latinization of Florida." Between those eras they explore a wide range of Florida topics: "cracker" women in the nineteenth century, black troops during the Civil War, a black Baptist minister during Reconstruction and beyond, a Jewish mayor of Tampa, black Republicans and the Knights of Labor, the Seminole Indians, a Jacksonville nun, mob violence, a Congresswoman, and World War II. Foshalee Plantation is a historic quail hunting estate located in northern Leon County, Florida, approximately 12 miles north of Tallahassee, within the Red Hills region spanning the Georgia-Florida border. Originally encompassing around 11,500 acres, it was established in the early 20th century as one of the oldest continuous private quail preserves in the area, transformed from former cotton lands into a managed hunting retreat for northern elites. The plantation, associated with prominent families including the Whitneys, Clarks, Irelands, and Ingalls, emphasized bobwhite quail production through practices like prescribed burning and multi-aged forest management, reflecting the broader shift in the region from agriculture to sporting conservation after the Civil War.
