From those encounters, one hundred portraits were selected, each paired with a stereotypically German name: not the subject's own, but an assigned one. In this investigation of ethnicity and cultural identity, Carroll examines how history shapes and burdens national self-perception in post-reunification Germany, a moment of intense debate about what German identity could or should mean. The subtitle Documentary quietly implicates the truth claims of the documentary tradition itself: the document records nothing stable, only the gap between self-identification, stereotype, and the photograph's supposed authority.
