Using the framework provided by descriptive translation studies, the author illustrates the socio-cultural context of AVT in the Basque Country, focusing on the dubbing from English to Basque of television animation for children. The most innovative aspect of the book lies in its cultural and descriptive approach. Following a corpus-based descriptive methodology, the study establishes a set of criteria for a contextual and linguistic analysis that embraces both the cultural and linguistic dimensions of translation and allows source texts to be compared with their translated versions at the macro- and micro-structural levels. It describes the grammatical system of modality in Japanese in terms of the form-func…tion relationship within the scope of a framework based on the European school of modality. Accordingly, it deals with the modal system and its constituents in Japanese, accommodating all the grammatical means of modariti (modality) in the Nihongo bunpou (Japanese grammar system). This study also casts light on the learner variety of modality, which is comprised of two core systems, epistemic and deontic, both of which are evident at the utterance level and the morphosyntactic level. The learner variety of modality elucidated here is presented as a proto-modality, which is viewed as a system in its own right rather than as an improvised or distorted version of the native modal system in Japanese. 242 pp. Englisch.

The text engages with the many extraordinary…intersections created between Arenas' writing, the autobiographical construction of the literary subject and the exilic condition. Through focusing on texts written on the island of Cuba and in exile, the author analyses the ways in which Arenas' writing emblemises a complex process of identification with, and rejection of, his homeland - always an imagined place and which is, as the place of his origins, intrinsically related to the maternal. She examines how the maternal and the motherland are conflated and how the narrator-protagonists' identification is always in relation to, and dependent upon, this dominant motif. The book also explores the extent to which Arenas' writing is a tortuous attempt to escape from this dominance and to free himself and his writing from the ties that bind him to the mother and the motherland, and shows that Arenas suffered the exilic condition long before his move to the United States in 1980 as part of the Mariel exodus. 272 pp. Englisch.
