Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The epic battle of the Marine Fusiliers in the Great WarThe men of the French Fusiliers Marins were always bound to draw public attention because irrespective of their proud military tradition, which often had them fighting alongside the celebrated French Foreign Legion, their distinctive uniform set them apart from the ordinary 'poilus' of the French infantry. The 'naval style' uniform of the men with their characteristic jaunty red pompomed hats and their officers in naval finery made them a unit guaranteed to draw attention and inspire admiration and romance. The role of this unit should not be confused with that of British Royal Marines. They were not intended to be sea going soldiers but to serve as land based infantry primarily in defence of naval stations and in campaigns where amphibious landings and naval support was essential. In the opening stages of the First World War between the middle of October and the middle of November 1914, these remarkable troops fought at Dixmude in Flanders, against the overwhelming tide of the German Army, in a fierce action that upheld their finest traditions, but all but annihilated them. This book is the account of that battle.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The last great war of the horseThe role of the 'war horse' particularly during its twilight years during the First World War has recently become the focus of much interest. All armies have used horses in wartime as cavalry and mounted infantry, as officers chargers, for artillery or for transport and supply. Some large nations, because the horse formed a central role in its domestic life, became more associated with horses and horsemanship in the period when mechanised transport was making its first halting appearance onto the field of conflict. Russia was famous for its Cossacks and among the countries of the British Empire and Commonwealth the accomplished riders of Australia, New Zealand and, especially noteworthy, Canada-the home of the author of this book. Naturally, the author is concerned with the activities of the Canadian Cavalry Brigade, but his book examines in detail the role of horses in every aspect of the Great War. He was not oblivious to the suffering of horses in war though, he clearly demonstrates a great affection for them in their military role. The book concludes with pictures and vignettes of individual horses of renown in the Canadian Army and a short piece on the service of dogs.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands. …

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - With the Prussians in 1870The title of this book is ironic. Early on readers will discover a facsimile of a newspaper article-discovered by the author upon his return to England-reporting his death from a bullet in the head. The news, as is said, was greatly exaggerated! Legge was one of that resolute breed of newsmen made famous in the 19th century-a special correspondent. These journalists not only supplied the public with newspaper copy but also became significant chroniclers of the momentous events of their times. Theirs was a roaming commission, which allowed them to see events from different perspectives and they had the necessary ability to transform what they had seen and experienced into significant books. Legge went to Europe to report on the Franco-Prussian War which broke out in 1870. This was arguably one of the first conflicts in which at least one of the protagonists fully understood the consequences of rapidly advancing technology and its potential on the field of conflict. The Prussians had learnt the lessons of the closely observed American Civil War. Legge elected to view the war from the Prussian perspective and his account is as full of detail and interest as one might expect from an eyewitness who was an expert with words.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - 'Little woman of great courage'-the life of Mary JemisonMary Jemison's is a remarkable story. Born in 1743, she was captured by Indians whilst in her teenage years. Her family had emigrated from Ireland and settled on the troubled Pennsylvania frontier in lands controlled by the Iroquois. The Seven Years War broke out and its realisation in the New World, the French and Indian war set the border-lands ablaze. In 1755 a mixed raiding party of Shawnee warriors and Frenchmen captured the Jemison family and an unrelated boy but subsequently killed most of them. Mary was sold to the Senecas and disappeared into the wilderness. Her remarkable story of captivity that gradually led to integration into the life of the Indians of the Eastern woodlands makes vital reading for all those interested in the role of women in the opening up of early America. Jemison eventually elected to live her life as a Seneca despite much subsequent interaction with white settlers. Her descriptions of the part played by the Indian tribes during the Revolutionary War are both unusual and vitally interesting.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - A woman in IraqThis book of a woman's ordeal at the hands of Arabs in post First World War Mesopotamia (now modern day Iraq) is such a riveting account that to describe too much would be to spoil the experience for the reader. The young wife and mother, Zetton Buchanan, had joined her husband, Captain 'Billy' Buchanan of the RAF, on his eastern posting with a degree of expectation and sense of impending adventure. Nothing she could have imagined would have prepared her for the events that followed. This is a touching and inspirational first hand account of a young woman's ability to cope with tragedy and overcome astonishing difficulties. Although the narrative takes place in the 1920s there is much with the pages of Zetton Buchanan's book that resonates with the experiences of many in this still troubled land. A recommended read for those interested in women's issues.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Letters from under the GunsObservation Posts, a special Leonaur book, brings together two books by Dawson concerning warfare as experienced by the men in the trenches during the First World War on the Western Front. 'Carry On' and its sequel 'Living Bayonets' are based on the author's time as an artillery officer and principally comprise his letters to his family. Dawson was an intelligent, thoughtful correspondent who in fine prose has left posterity an intimate 'gunner's' view of the Great War making this book an essential source work for students of the period. This good value 'two-in-one' Leonaur edition enables collectors to own these uncommon and related accounts in a single, value-for-money volume.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - An outstanding story of the aerial war and a daring escape from captivityFor the uninitiated this book's original title, 'My Escape from Donnington Hall,' gave few clues as to the astonishing and unique nature of its contents. Its author was a young German, Gunther Plüschow. As an airman in German service at the outbreak of the First World War he was, unusually, serving in China flying a Rumpler-Taube aircraft from the East Asia naval station at Tsingtau that became besieged by joint Japanese and British forces. Plüschow's attempt to fly to safety, as it became obvious the position would fall, ended in a crash in rice paddies. He set out to walk back to Germany and the many adventures that followed would alone would qualify his story as a remarkable one. However, he was eventually captured and became a prisoner of war. Stories of wartime escape abound, but those who have been incarcerated in England have always been confounded by the difficulties of quitting an island.' In Plüschow's case this was exacerbated since in the east he had acquired a distinctive dragon tattoo; yet Plüschow he succeeded and is the only prisoner of war to escape from Britain and make the 'home run.' His remarkable narrative of his wartime adventures makes absolutely essential reading and is certainly beyond compare.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Pirates of the Indian OceanDespite the rise and domination of the Raj in post mutiny India and all it came to mean to the British Empire, it should be remembered that the rush to India by all the European powers was originally for the wealth of its trade. That trade had been carried on for centuries and by the 17th and early 18th centuries was still active, vital and industrious. However, Britannia had not quite established her sovereignty of the waves and to sail into the vastness of the southern and eastern oceans was to launch a ship and its crew into the virtual unknown-not because of uncharted currents and coasts, but because of other dangers they might encounter on their outward or homeward passages. The seas were the prowling place of pirates of all descriptions, creeds, colours and nationalities. Some belonged to the races of the sub continent itself while other captains and crews bore names little different from those of their victims. This interesting book describes the activities of this lawless seafaring breed, those who fell foul of them and those who sought to rid the sea lanes of their pestilential presence. This Leonaur edition also contains a first hand account of an English woman who had her own very close encounter with pirates which contributes an invaluable immediacy to the principal narrative.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Fine soldiers in a lost warIt is inevitable that the men and events of wars won endure in the public memory far longer than those that are lost. The history of America in the 18th century is confusing to many, because in the space of a few years those who were once allies and friends in shared adversity became bitter enemies. The British were seen by the emergent nation as ruthless and incompetent blackguards who were summarily rejected in the name of enlightenment and liberty. Predictably the truth is somewhat different. Upon reflection it is implausible that the same army that had fought so brilliantly during the Seven Years War in Europe and the New World and would demonstrate its superiority again against Napoleon's French should fall so appallingly. The British Army always had its share of brilliant and capable soldiers who served across all ranks and this excellent book recounts the careers of some of them in a most compelling way. Here are soldiers fighting a war in a huge landscape-outnumbered, under resourced and poorly supported by the home government in every way; here also are the men who lost America but saved Canada. Several would resign rather than fight a war they knew to be unwinnable; some were notable battlefield commanders who would fight against the odds only to fall, 'when glory was in view.' This book, originally published under the title Some British Soldiers in America, encourages a reconsideration of the role and performance of serving British soldiers who, irrespective of the cause, endeavoured to do their duty during the American War of Independence.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - On campaign under the tricolourThis is an essential book for all those interested in the French Foreign Legion because it is a brilliant first hand account written by an English 'gentleman volunteer' who experienced 'life in the legion' in the late 1880's and who had previously been a serving officer in one of the cavalry regiments of the British Army. Far from being a tale of hardship and abuse, the author had nothing but admiration for the Legion and-as an experienced soldier-obviously thoroughly enjoyed the five years he spent serving in its ranks. The writer quite simply could not have enough action and he volunteered to serve in Tonkin, Dahomey and against the Tuareg tribesmen of North Africa. In consequence this book is full of colourful and detailed campaign and battle action which is compellingly recounted by a fighting soldier more than capable of putting his engrossing story into words. Highly recommended.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Nets, mines and bulletsVery rarely, as we warm our hands by a coal fire or eat our fish supper, do we think about what it took to heat our rooms or fill our plates. We may feel grateful that the task was fortunately undertaken by others-that it is something we would not wish to do ourselves-but nothing more. The life of the fishermen of Northern waters is, and always has been, a perilous one, many brave sailors have drowned in pursuit of food for our nation. When war came the fishing fleet, aware of its duty, did not dry dock and hang its nets until peace returned. It still set out to fish, aware that the perils of its trade would be worsened by the presence of an enemy that knows that a hungry nation will be subdued more quickly. It would have been enough if that was all British fishermen had done, but they also gathered intelligence, cleared mines, fought actions from armed fishing vessels and many other incredible acts of courage and devotion. These were not men whose achievements were seen as glamorous, but they were nonetheless brave, unsung heroes in war as well as in peace. This book details the actions of British Fishermen in Northern waters during the First World War; it is, of course, an account so full of action and incident that it is essential reading for those interested in the study of maritime warfare.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Tales for black nights and cosy firesidesChristmas time or in any event in the deepest days of the winter, when the nights are longest, darkest and coldest has traditionally been the time for the telling of ghostly and thrillingly scary stories. This is the time when we can huddle together, preferably warmed by the reassuring flicker and glow of a fire, thick curtains tight shut against the gloom, in the security of familiar places where the frisson of fear can be laughed away in good company, food and drink. So 'The Witching Time-Tales for the Years End' could not be more aptly titled. It is a well known anthology of eleven tales and verses originally published in 1886 and its contents admirably demonstrate that little has changed in the last hundred years or more. The high regard for this book compiled by Henry Norman-who also penned a piece in the book himself-as an Unwin's Christmas Annual is of course derived from the substantial talents of its contributors. F. Marion Crawford, Von Degen, Vernon Lee and others have been brought together in this delightful collection-'Tis now the very Witching Time' as the Bard said in Hamlet. Indeed it is! Highly recommended.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The conflicts of backwoods and high seasThis book, though not the first published in the series, is chronologically the first in Brady's essential cycle of books on the fights and fighters of the American nation. It includes the adventures of the early explorers of the North American continent including De Soto and the trials of the Huguenot colonies. No account of the period should ignore the rapacious activities of the 'Gentlemen of the Black Flag,' Sir Henry Morgan and other pirates who plied their deadly trade under the Jolly Roger. The 18th century saw a decisive confrontation between Britain and France over no less an issue than which of those powers would dominate the globe in terms of language, culture, influence and trade. Though the conflict was a global one, skirmishes and battles fought in the backwoods and mountains and on the lakes of the New World became known as the French and Indian War, so called because both sides could call on fierce native American tribes of the Eastern Woodlands-the Iroquois and Huron nations respectively-in support of their cause. The story of this war is compellingly recounted here, from the early days of disaster to Ticonderoga and the final defeat of the French under Montcalm by the British under Wolfe at Quebec. Brady's series is regarded as a classic and these new Leonaur editions make it available, in its entirety, to modern readers and libraries.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - A Gunner's WarThis book by the author of 'Observation Posts'(also published by Leonaur) is a markedly different first hand account of the war artillerymen working close to the front line trenches or in vulnerable and perilous O. Ps knew. The author's previous book was comprised of letters home and, of course, included impressions of particular interest to family members. They contained much good cheer and reassurance. 'A Test of Scarlet' describes a brutal war of mud and blood. Dawson was a fine writer and his skill transforms the horrible reality of war into a vital account guaranteed to not only inform but to be a reading pleasure. Dawson takes the reader right to the heart of the war with all its fear, violence and periods of stultifying boredom. It will be a welcome addition to any library on the Great War.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The great king of the Ostrogoths and regent of the VisigothsTheodoric was king of the Ostrogoths, ruler of Italy, regent of the Visigoths and viceroy of the Eastern Roman Empire. He was born in 454 AD in what is now the border region of Austria and Hungary. The son of a king, he travelled as a child to Byzantium as a hostage against his father's good conduct and as was traditional for those in his position benefited from the education his more cultured circumstances offered. This enabled him to become a master of the military art providing him with skills and knowledge which served him well when he took power as monarch. He was 31 years old before he returned to his own people. At the behest of the Byzantine Emperor Zeno. Theodoric invaded King Odoacer's Italian kingdom fighting battles at Isonzo, Verona, Adda and Ravenna between 488 and 493 AD. The invasion established his power base and his influence with the emperor since Odoacer had been a troublesome vassal ruler and the Ostrogoths now were able to occupy much needed new territory for expansion. Allied with the Franks, Theodoric campaigned successfully against the Vandals, but as is often the case for those with dynastic aspirations his conquests and political machinations did not long survive his death in 526. Nevertheless Theodoric was a significant figure in Europe during the final phase of the Western Roman Empire and this account will offer much to students of the period.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Marshal Oudinot-soldier of the First Empire of FranceNicholas Charles Oudinot, 1st Comte Oudinot, Duc de Reggio and Marshal of Napoleon Bonaparte's France was not born in the unusual style of the great men of the First Empire, but far from the opportunities that might lead to greatness. One of nine children and the son of a brewer, distiller and farmer in Lorraine, Oudinot served as an ordinary soldier during the 1780s eventually resigning with the rank of sergeant after despairing of failing to achieve further promotion. The French Revolution then cast opportunity at his feet as only great social turmoil can and created the chance to rise through merit in ways impossible during the days of the old regime it swept aside. As a lieutenant colonel of volunteers in 1793 his action in the defence of the fort at Bitsch brought him to the notice of influential commanders and he was transferred to the regular army where recognition for his talent in numerous actions, but particularly at Kaiserslautern in 1794, won him promotion to general of brigade. Now Oudinot began to keep company with the great soldiers of France and he proved himself consistently on the battlefield, rising to inspector general of infantry and winning both the sword of honour and the grand cross of the Legion of Honour. By 1809 Oudinot had joined the elite ranks of the Marshals of France. He fought at Schongrabern, decisively at Austerlitz, at Friedland, Wagram, on the Russian Campaign, Lutzen, Bautzen, Leipzig and in the campaign to Napoleon's fall in 1814. Oudinot supported the Bourbon Restoration and did not rally to his former master's flag during the Hundred Days. This account of the Marshal's life and career is ably assisted by contributions from his wife. This book is, of course, essential reading for all those interested in the Napoleonic age and especially in the actions of its most outstanding military figures.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The Bloody years of the birth of a nationThe inexorable drive westward was to be the course of the American nation until it had firmly established itself from the Atlantic to the Pacific. For many, however, 'the West' has come to mean the great plains of the interior with their herds of buffalo and mounted and feathered Indian tribes like the Sioux and Cheyenne. No less interesting is the period when the dangerous frontier between settlements and the wilderness with all its perils lay in what is now consider the eastern part of the USA. The period around the closing stages of the Revolutionary Wars of the 18th century and the turn of the 19th century was especially turbulent and is the subject of this book. Within these pages are accounts of Bouquet and the action at Bushy Run, Sam Brady the Ranger, Ferguson and Kings Mountain, Boone, the heroism of Bryan's station and the tragedy of Blue Licks, the bloody conflicts with the Red Stick Creeks of Alabama and the fierce Indians of the Florida Everglades, the Seminoles. Border Fights & Fighters contains riveting and rarely told accounts of George Rogers Clark, the great Tecumseh, George Croghan, the massacre on Raisin River and the heroic defence of Fort Stephenson. Brady's third volume in his American Fights and Fighters series concludes with the retelling of the struggle for the creation of the Texas Republic, of Travis, Crockett, Huston, the iconic Alamo and victory at San Jacinto. Those familiar with Brady's writing will be pleased to learn that this volume is one of his best and will be a highly rewarding reading experience for those interested in frontier America.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - A Royal Engineer's view of the war in the Iberian Peninsula-two volumes in oneYoung Captain Charles Boothby of the Royal Engineers served in Spain as part of Wellington's army fighting the invading French forces of Napoleon. Posterity is fortunate in that following his experiences he put his recollections in writing in the form of two separate books, 'Under England's Flag' and its sequel, which covers the period up to his wounding, capture and imprisonment, 'A Prisoner in France.' Both of these books are rare and not often seen as modern reprints or on the antiquarian market. So Leonaur is delighted to present both volumes of Boothby's engaging account in a single unique volume. Accounts by Royal Engineers are not commonplace among Napoleonic War first hand accounts which makes this book particularly exceptional. Present at the the little reported Battle of Maida in Italy, Boothby was also engaged in early Peninsular War Campaigns including Corunna, under Sir John Moore. Upon returning to the Iberian Peninsular he was wounded at the Battle of Talavera. This book is an essential addition to any library of the Peninsular War, but readers with a more casual interest can be assured that Boothby is an entertaining author who recounts his story in a personable style full of incident, anecdote and important campaign and battlefield detail. Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - A great river and those who sailed itThis well known and highly regarded classic of the opening up of the American West concentrates on the great rivers of North America and the Missouri in particular. Focus is, of course, placed to the iconic paddle-steamers, their captains and crews, that plied its waters and that have become emblematic of river navigation in 19th century America. The scope of the narrative is significant. Events are described from the mid 1850s and through the American Civil War. However, the book principally deals with the post Civil war period of westward expansion and the role of the vessels and the river itself in the wars against the plains Indians. The transportation of troops and materials played a significant part in these campaigns and this is, of course, is recounted here in some detail. Readers will learn about the exploits of boats including the 'Far West,' 'Key West,' Rosebud,' 'Luella' and 'North Alabama' in this fascinating account of the American frontier afloat.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - A vital book on momentous events in Iberia The works of Washington Irving, one of the earliest of the great American writers, need little introduction. He was a man of varied interests and enormous talent able to write entertaining and enduring fiction including the iconic 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' and the wonderful collection of travelogue and fantasy that is 'Tales from the Alhambra.' His ability as an historian cannot be underestimated and he was able to leave posterity a canon of outstanding books on subjects ranging from the early days of exploration in his homeland, to this book, 'The Conquest of Granada,' about the history of Spain-a country in which he worked while living in the famous Alhambra of Granada. The period of Spanish history this book concentrates on is fascinating. The Islamic world, both in the form of the Ottoman Turks and the Moors of North Africa, made enormous inroads into 'Christian' Europe over hundreds of years. Before this Islamic tide finally abated it had to be turned back at Tours-almost at the gates of Paris-by Charles Martel in AD 732 and would besiege Vienna in 1529 and 1683. Large tracts of land fell under their control and nowhere was more successfully or enduringly settled than Spain in the form of the jewel that was Al-Andalus. A series of campaigns in the last years of the 14th century known as the 'Reconquista' saw the Catholic monarchs, Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon finally bring about the fall of the Nasrid dynasty's hold on the emirate of Granada. Irving's work is an acknowledged classic and is essential reading for all those interested in the epic struggle between the sword and cross and the scimitar and crescent.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The significance of author Anna Katherine Green (1846-1935) upon American detective fiction cannot be underestimated. Not only was she among the first writers of the detective story in the United States but in her career she penned over 40 novels and short stories in the genre. She turned her literary attention from writing poetry to crime mysteries and published 'The Leavenworth Case' to great acclaim in 1878. Indeed this debut work is still regarded as an enduring classic. Furthermore, while most of us are familiar with the detectives of the New York Police Department as they have appeared in books, films and on television for decades, it was Green who was among the first to focus on the detectives of the NYPD as principal characters and, through her Detective Ebenezer Gryce offer him and the force to the public in series form. In the grand tradition of the sleuth Gryce has a number of 'sidekicks' including the nosey socialite, Amelia Butterworth-an embryonic Miss Marple. Green also wrote about another now familiar character type, the 'girl detective' in the form of debutante Violet Strange. These tales of the NYPD are set against the colourful world of the city of New York in the last two decades of the 19th century and this provides both the crimes and the characters that occupy these mysteries with an irresistible and unusual old world charm. This special Leonaur edition of the Detective Gryce cas Elektronisches Buch comprises six substantial volumes and includes both novels and short stories featuring the famous criminal hunter. This fifth substantial volume includes the 'One of My Sons,' 'The House of the Whispering Pines' and 'The Staircase at the Heart's Delight.' We believe this six volume collection is the most complete collection of Gryce stories ever gathered together and is therefore an essential addition to the library of any collector of classic American crime fiction.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - A second helping of Nathaniel Hawthorne's bewitching stories of old New EnglandNathaniel Hawthorne was one of the earliest admired American novelists and short story writers. Born in Salem, Massachusetts, his origins ever influenced his work. His tales were invariably set in New England, were darkly romantic and were often concerned with the occult and witches and their works in particular. Indeed, one of Hawthorne's ancestors actually sat as a judge during the famous Salem Witch Trials, so the author's inspiration could barely have stronger foundations. Predictably Hawthorne's stories contain puritanical messages on the themes of sin, guilt and fundamental evil which go well with stories that contain uncanny and, sometimes, almost surreal elements. Although Hawthorne was decidedly popular with readers opinions about his work was sharply divided among his peers. Poe was a particularly harsh critic. Nevertheless, more recent analysis has suggested that he remains-possibly-America's greatest novelist, challenged only by Henry James and William Faulkner. This Leonaur collection of four volumes has gathered together Hawthorne's tales which contain elements of the weird and bizarre. It contains very well known works and those that may be less familiar.Volume two contains the novel 'The Marble Faun' one of Hawthorne's most highly regarded works and twelve short stories including 'My Kinsman,Major Molineux,' 'Old Ticonderoga,' 'The Celestial Railroad,' 'Snow Flakes,' 'The Ambitious Guest' and others.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…
