Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - 'Lakota Culture, World Economy uses extensive interviews with residents of the Pine Ridge and Rosebud Reservations to present the first in-depth look at the modern economy of the Lakotas. Workers both in and out of the home, small-business owners, federal and tribal government employees, an…d unemployed and underemployed Lakotas speak directly about their economic prospects, the changes they have experienced, and how they cope with living in communities that are in many ways marginalized by the modern world economy. Kathleen Ann Pickering weaves these compelling first-person accounts with broader theoretical considerations to create a nuanced ethnographic tapestry of life today on the Pine Ridge and Rosebud Reservations. Particularly enlightening are her consideration of the far-reaching economic significance of traditional Lakota households and her assessment of how Lakota identity--shaped by values, gender, ethnicity, race, and class--is inextricably bound up with the modern reservation economy.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - 'John Rollin Ridge is the first full-length biography of a Cherokee whose best revenge was in writing well. A cross between Lord Byron, the romantic poet who made things happen, and Joaquin Murieta, the legendary bandit he would immortalize, John Rollin Ridge was a controversial, celebrated…, and self-cast exile. Ridge was born to a prominent Cherokee Indian family in 1827, a tumultuous and violent time when the state of Georgia was trying to impose its sovereignty on the Cherokee Nation and whites were pressing against its borders. James W. Parins places Ridge in the circle of his family and recreates the circumstances surrounding the assassination of his father (before his eyes) and his grandfather and uncle by rival Cherokees, led by John Ross. Eventful chapters portray the boy's flight with his mother and her family to Arkansas, his classical education there, his killing of a Ross loyalist and subsequent exile in California during the gold rush, his talent as a romantic poet and author, and his career as a journalist. To the end of his life, Ridge advocated the Cherokees' assimilation into white society.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The American Southwest was arguably as formative a landscape for Willa Cather's aesthetic vision as was her beloved Nebraska. Both landscapes elicited in her a sense of raw incompleteness. They seemed not so much finished places as things unassembled, more like countries 'still waiting to b…e made into [a] landscape.' Cather's fascination with the Southwest led to its presence as a significant setting in three of her most ambitious novels: 'The Song of the Lark,' 'The Professor's House,' and 'Death Comes for the Archbishop.' This volume focuses a sharp eye on how the landscape of the American Southwest served Cather creatively and the ways it shaped her research and productivity. No single scholarly methodology prevails in the essays gathered here, giving the volume rare depth and complexity.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Narratology has been conceived from its earliest days as a project that transcends disciplines and media. The essays gathered here address the question of how narrative migrates, mutates, and creates meaning as it is expressed across various media.Dividing the inquiry into five areas: face-…to-face narrative, still pictures, moving pictures, music, and digital media, Narrative across Media investigates how the intrinsic properties of the supporting medium shape the form of narrative and affect the narrative experience. Unlike other interdisciplinary approaches to narrative studies, all of which have tended to concentrate on narrative across language-supported fields, this unique collection provides a much-needed analysis of how narrative operates when expressed through visual, gestural, electronic, and musical means. In doing so, the collection redefines the act of storytelling. Although the fields of media and narrative studies have been invigorated by a variety of theoretical approaches, this volume seeks to avoid a dominant theoretical bias by providing instead a collection of concrete studies that inspire a direct look at texts rather than relying on a particular theory of interpretation. A contribution to both narrative and media studies, Narrative across Media is the first attempt to bridge the two disciplines.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Featuring a major synthesis and critique of interdisciplinary narrative theory, 'Story Logic marks a watershed moment in the study of narrative. David Herman argues that narrative is simultaneously a cognitive style, a discourse genre, and a resource for writing. Because stories are strateg…ies that help humans make sense of their world, narratives not only 'have a logic but also 'are a logic in their own right, providing an irreplaceable resource for structuring and comprehending experience. 'Story Logic brings together and pointedly examines key concepts of narrative in literary criticism, linguistics, and cognitive science, supplementing them with a battery of additional concepts that enable many different kinds of narratives to be analyzed and understood. By thoroughly tracing and synthesizing the development of different strands of narrative theory and provocatively critiquing what narratives are and how they work, 'Story Logic builds a powerful interpretive tool kit that broadens the applicability of narrative theory to more complex forms of stories, however and wherever they appear. 'Story Logic offers a fresh and incisive way to appreciate more fully the power and significance of narratives.

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Since the recent republication of her novel 'The Squatter and the Don, Maria Amparo Ruiz de Burton (1832-95) has become a key figure in the recovery of nineteenth-century Mexican American literature. An aristocratic 'Californiana, she championed the rights of Mexican Americans in novels, plays, an…d letters. Her 1885 novel called attention to the illegal appropriation of Mexican land by the United States government, and she critiqued the political mores of America after the Civil War in light of the Mexican-American war. Her keen assessment of corporate capitalism at the end of the nineteenth century, frank acknowledgment of feminine desire, and deft insights about economic realities and class relations were unique among her American peers. Using Ruiz de Burton's work to analyze the critical schism conventionally imposed on nineteenth-century literary culture in America, the essays in this collection also draw connections between her work and the contemporary Chicana and Chicano canons. At once richly historical and critically nuanced, these essays appraise a politically complex Mexican American writer alternately celebrated as marginalized and censured for her identification with a social elite. This volume includes a section on pedagogy that offers a discussion of teaching approaches, syllabi, discussion questions, and assignments.

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The origins of the infamous forgery, the 'Protocols of the Sages of Zion, are the subject of much vigorous debate. In this meticulously researched and cogently argued study, Cesare G. De Michelis illuminates its authors and the circumstances of production by focusing on the text itself. De Micheli…s examines in detail the earliest texts of the 'Protocols, looking in particular at the historical and structural relationships among them. His research unveils the differing texts of the 'Protocols and the presumed date of the first forgery. It also yields a greater understanding of the milieu in which the forgery was produced and the identity and motivations of its authors. This volume is a revised and expanded edition of the original, which appeared in Italian. Featured is an arguably archetypal Russian text of the 'Protocols, which De Michelis pieced together from several publications, based on careful textual analysis.

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Published for the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism'Democratization and the Jews' explores the ways in which West Germans in Munich responded after 1945 to the Holocaust. Examining the political and religious discourse on the 'Jewish Question,' Anthony D. Kauders sho…ws how men and women in the immediate postwar era employed antisemitic images from the Weimar Republic in order to distance themselves from the murderous policies of the Nazi regime. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, many people--and particularly Social Democrats and members of the churches, both Catholic and Protestant--began to repudiate antisemitism altogether, appreciating the connection between liberal democracy, on the one hand, and the rejection of hatred of Jews, on the other. This change was a revolutionary moment in the democratization of the Federal Republic, as the language of liberalism merged with the spirit of democracy.

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - 'Contemporary Jewish Writing in Canada brings together important and innovative works from modern Jewish writers living in Canada. This anthology presents a variety of male and female voices, both established and new, some translated from French or Yiddish. Caught between a conservative British tr…adition and an aggressive American influence with a long immigrant history, Canadian Jewish literature has charted a unique, intermediate course. The largest community of Jewish writers in Canada can be found in Montreal, where a vibrant Yiddish culture has flourished, surrounded by a Francophone majority. Beginning with A. M. Klein and carrying through the works of Leonard Cohen and Mordecai Richler, Jewish writing in Montreal has adapted to changing political and linguistic pressures over the course of the twentieth century. A number of Jewish authors in this anthology write in French and are involved in translation--not just of language, but of cultural values as well. The second largest concentration of Jewish writers in Canada is in Winnipeg and the western part of the country, where Jewish communities have strong Yiddish and socialist roots. A generation of younger writers, however, have shifted from these earlier centers to Toronto, where they form part of a multicultural mosaic, blending Jewish, Canadian, and cosmopolitan values. From Anne Michaels's Greek island to Aryeh Lev Stollman's Berlin and Michael Redhill's Irish synagogue, Canadian-Jewish literature engages exile--at home abroad and abroad at home.
