Añadir al carritoTrade Paperback. Condición: New. British architect and critic Paul Shepheard is a fresh new voice incurrent postmodern debates about the history and meaning of architecture. In thiswonderfully unorthodox quasi-novelistic essay, complete with characters and dialogue(but no plot), Shepheard draws a boundary around the subject of architecture, describing its place in art and technology, its place in history, and its place inour lives now.At a time when it is fashionable to say that architecture iseverything -- from philosophy to science to art to theory -- Shepheard boldly andirreverently sets limits to the subject, so that we may talk about architecture forwhat it is. He takes strong positions, names the causes of the problems, and tellsus how bad things are and how they can get better.Along the way he marshals someunlikely but plausible witnesses who testify about the current state ofarchitecture. Instead of the usual claims or complaints by the usual suspects, theseobservations are of an altogether different order. Constructed as a series offables, many of them politically incorrect, What is Architecture? is a refreshingmeditation on the options, hopes, possibilities, and failures of shelter insociety.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Used - Very Good. 'Diana Ketchum's magnificently researched and beautifully accomplished text, with its accompanying images, is not a book for mere specialists. It is a book of interest to garden enthusiasts, to art historians, to surrealists -- to anyone with a taste for fantasy, architectural metaphor, the poetry of vision, the aesthetics of stone and leaf.' -- Arthur C. Danto, Johnsonian Professor of Philosophy, Columbia University The Dé sert de Retz, the supreme surviving example of the folly garden, is one of the most amply and beautifully documented of France's historic gardens. Since 1990, when the Arion Press published the first book on this garden outside of Paris, the Dé sert de Retz has been transformed by an ongoing restoration. That limited, fine-press edition is long out of print and much sought after. This new edition reproduces in a smaller oblong format the material in the original book. Diana Ketcham's text has been expanded and updated to reflect recent scholarship and physical changes to the site. There are also new photographs that show the restored landscape and the complete restoration of the folly known as the Broken Column to its original state as a false ruin. The 100 illustrations consist of views of the construction of the park (1774-1789); models from antiquity and analogues in contemporary gardens; facsimiles of the 26 engravings of the garden that appeared in Georges Le Rouge's Dé tails de nouveaux jardins a la mode: Jardins anglo-chinois, the most important illustrated book on gardens of the eighteenth century; and photographs of the buildings and grounds taken by the British photographer Michael Kenna. Thesebeautiful photographs, together with Diana Ketcham's carefully researched text, capture the haunting atmosphere of the place during its transition from the romantic, overgrown state of benign neglect, which so intrigued the Surrealists, to the clearing and building that today preserve a balance between the encroachments of unruly vegetation and disintegration. Very nice clean, tight copy free of any marks. wrapped in complimentary Brodart dust jacket protector.

Añadir al carritoTrade Paperback. Condición: Used - Like New. 'Brilliant. Anthony Vidler is a conceptual conjurer of formidable skill.'-- J. Mordaunt Crook, 'New York Times Book Review' The Architectural Uncanny presents an engaging and original series of meditations on issues and figures that are at the heart of the most pressing debates surrounding architecture today. Anthony Vidler interprets contemporary buildings and projects in light of the resurgent interest in the uncanny as a metaphor for a fundamentally 'unhomely' modern condition. The essays are at once historical and theoretical, opening up the complex and difficult relationships between politics, social thought, and architectural design in an era when the reality of homelessness and the idealism of the neo-avant-garde have never seemed so far apart. Anthony Vidler interprets contemporary buildings and projects in light of the resurgent interest in the uncanny as a metaphor for a fundamentally 'unhomely' modern condition. Very nice clean, tight copy free of any marks.

The Wicksell Lectures, 1990. 'A disproportionate amount of the best in modern economics is Stiglitz's creation. This book uses it to illuminate a classic question concerning the organization of the public side of our lives. Judged in terms of both depth and reach, this elegantly written volume is never less than what we have come to expect for one of the most significant social thinkers of our time' (Partha Dasgupta, University of Cambridge). 'The rapid collapse of socialism has raised new economic policy questions and revived old theoretical issues. In this book, Joseph Stiglitz explains how the neoclassical, or Walrasian model (the formal articulation of Adam Smith's invisible hand), which has dominated economic thought over the past half century, may have wrongly encouraged the belief that market socialism could work. Stiglitz proposes an alternative model, based on the economics of information, that provides greater theoretical insight into the workings of a market economy and clearer guidance for the setting of policy in transitional economies. Stiglitz sees the critical failing in the standard neoclassical model underlying market socialism to be its assumptions concerning information, particularly its failure to consider the problems that arise from lack of perfect information and from the costs of acquiring information. He also identifies problems arising from its assumptions concerning completeness of markets, competitiveness of markets, and the absence of innovation. Stiglitz argues that not only did the existing paradigm fail to provide much guidance on the vital question of the choice of economic systems, the advice it did provide was often misleading' (MIT Press Web site). Joseph E. Stiglitz: Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, 2001 (shared with George A. Akerlof and A. Michael Spence), 'for their analyses of markets with asymmetric information.'.

This work faces the crisis of the city in the late 20th century, embarking on a journey through theatres and museums, panoramas and maps, buildings and institutions that are used to construct a new reading of the city as a system of representation. Boyer brings together elements and concepts from geography, critical theory, architecture, literature and painting in a synthetic and readable work that is broad in its reach and original in its insights. What emerges is a sense of the city reinvigorated with richness and potential. Light shelf wear and creasing on the jacket. Mylar wrapped. Some light sunning to the top edge of the boards.
