London: MACK, 2020, 126pp., . LACKING THE TWO POSTCARDS - Series: Discourse, 003 "In January 2020, Alec Soth received a letter from Chris Fausto Cabrera, an inmate of the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Rush City, in which he asked the photographer to engage in a dialogue. This sparked an expansive and insightful correspondence over the following nine months which, set against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, Black Lives Matter Movement and growing unrest, reaches to the heart of contemporary America. In amongst their exchanges of personal histories and shared influences - from Ralph Ellison's The Invisible Man and André 3000, to Robert Frank's The Americans and Rilke's 'Letters to a Young Poet' - developed a searing investigation of the redemptive power of art and the imagination, justice and accountability, life inside America's prisons, and the astonishing capacity of empathy and curiosity to bring two people together.". Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. This book, the first by the design and research practice Material Cultures, assembles a series of short essays and conversations exploring the cultures, systems, and infrastructures that shape the architectural industry and the destructive ecologies it fosters. The building practices dominating contemporary architecture are rooted in the exploitation of people and the degradation of our landscapes. Here, Paloma Gormley, Summer Islam, and George Massoud explore how this has come about and how alternative systems, with holistic approaches to the built environment, might be formulated.'Material Reform' presents a set of instructive and challenging perspectives drawing directly on the dialogues and tensions Material Cultures encounter in their ongoing work. Texts centred around key concepts including labour, time, maintenance, language, land, and touch are interwoven with a visual essay reckoning with the processes that have transformed industrialized landscapes at different scales of experience and resolution. Through text and visuals, concepts and practice, this book explores how developing a direct relationship with materials can help us find new languages with the potential to supersede those we have inherited from a narrow lineage of authors. These discursive threads come together to form a vital sourcebook for rethinking our relationships to materials, land, and development, in all their crucial intersections. An accessible sourcebook for sustainable architecture from the research practice Material Cultures, examining the relation of materials to subjects including labour, time, landscape, and language. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. After arriving in New York in 1938, Austrian photographer Lisette Model quickly found stunning early success. Her photographs graced the pages of renowned magazines and were exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art. Their frank portrayals of ordinary Americans, captured in bars and restaurants, on the beach and in the streets, revolutionised the world of photography. Yet by 1950, Model had all but ceased to circulate her images, devoting herself instead to teaching a new generation of photographers, including Diane Arbus and Rosalind Fox Solomon. She gained the reputation, scandalous in business-like New York, of being difficult. In this illustrated essay, Duncan Forbes offers a new interpretation of Models photography and biography, asking whether the artists rebelliousness is not in fact the key to understanding her remarkable life and work. This compelling illustrated essay offers a fresh view of photographer and teacher Lisette Model, considering the artists rebelliousness as the key to understanding her remarkable life and work. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. In an era of climate catastrophe and corporate agribusiness, meat has been decisively made over. Urbanites across the West are called upon to look at the animals we eat, and by looking, learn to treat them with love. We are asked to tenderise our carnal desire for flesh and dignify our relationship with the land. Yet can our appetite for meat be redeemed by this new way of seeing? Can an 'ethical' approach to the farming, sale, and consumption of meat really save both the planet and our souls?Revisiting John Berger's writings on animals and class, Meat Love restores a materialist lens to the politics of carnivorous desire. In this vital essay, Amber Husain deconstructs the beauty, tragedy, and mystery with which our images of meat are embellished, drawing on a range of visual sources from contemporary art and film to Instagram and advertising. Probing the nature of 'love' in contemporary human-animal relations, it casts a critical eye on the visual culture of meat as it gentrifies and mutates, informing, for better or for worse, who we become as political subjects. An extended illustrated essay by writer Amber Husain critically examining romantic representations of meat in contemporary culture, drawing on a wide range of references across political theory, literature, and art. Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. In 2009, the artist Anna Ostoya created a booklet with textual collages using an essay by the political theorist Chantal Mouffe, 'Politics and Passions: The Stakes of Democracy' (2002). In the essay, Mouffe critiqued the then-dominant 'beyond left and right' politics of neoliberalism and warned of its dangers - the rise of right-wing populist parties. Fascinated by Mouffe's strikingly prophetic ideas, as well as her bold call to fight the status quo in order to radicalise democracy and to prevent violence, Ostoya returned to the booklet in 2019. She composed for it a series of portraits based on sketches of people on the New York City subway and on reproductions of her paintings and collages from the preceding decade. She also conducted a conversation with Mouffe about the politics of the last forty years, about the contemporary moment and about art, which is included in this publication. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. In Fugitive Tilts, Ishion Hutchinson, author of House of Lords and Commons (for which he won the National Book Critics Circle Award in Poetry), turns to prose to create an incomplete biography of love: love of poetry, discovered in childhood; love of home, with its continual disconnections and returns; and love of the works and artists that look over him with 'an angel's aura', from Treasure Island to John Coltrane.Gathering essays that range across time, place, and form, Hutchinson builds, piece by piece, a space from which the suffering of the past and the present can be reckoned with and survived. Through these texts, he pays homage to the inheritances and influences that are part of his history and to Derek Walcott in particular, whose legacy threads through the book. Above all, Fugitive Tilts is a book suffused with the sea: its sound, its geography, and, as Hutchinson writes, its 'memory in motion'. Hutchinson's prose debut comprises searing essays on poetry, notions of home, and his artistic influences, paying homage to the diverse literary works that have formed him. Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. In Terra Infecta, Andrea Bagnato tells an unfamiliar history about a well-known place. Since the early days of tourism, the cities and landscapes of Italy have been bywords for beauty and grandeur. But, at home and abroad, the same places have also been haunted by associations with recurring epidemics and unhealthy ways of life, often more to do with politics than conditions on the ground. In this gripping narrative study, Bagnato shows how the modern quest for sanitation shaped Italy's urban and rural landscapes, propelling major transformations from the draining of the wetlands around Venice, to demolitions and replanning in Naples, to the expulsion of the inhabitants of ancient Matera. He argues that current north-south inequalities are founded on spurious medical narratives, and focuses on the real impact on the people caught in their ministrations. Ranging from Italian unification to the aftershocks of Covid-19, and drawing on architectural records, medical history, and the author's own travels, this vivid book reveals the lived realities of grand schemes, traces of vanished communities, and forgotten histories of collective organisation and resistance. This gripping narrative study examines the ways in which disease and public health have shaped the urban and rural landscapes of Italy, through intriguing case studies from across the country and its history. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Jason Fulfords latest book is a vibrant riff on conceptual artist Sol LeWitts 1977 publication PhotoGrids. Lots Of Lots transforms the seemingly quotidian objects captured by Fulford in nearly seven hundred photographs into an evocative collection of interconnected and overlapping forms. Employing a 3x3 format with nine square images on each page, Fulford groups his photographs by idiosyncratic features such as colour palette, slogans, distinctive shadows, and geometric shape. Untethered by location, style, or time, they move between coherence and collision in reflection of the varying order and disorder of the world. An empty laundrette, a lone park bench, and a cascading waterfall are among the many sights that find new resonance in Fulfords wry and illuminating compositions, revealing beauty among endless production and consumption. Riffing on conceptual artist Sol LeWitts 1977 publication PhotoGrids, Fulford categorises over seven hundred photographs in 3x3 format, anointing familiar objects and scenery with new wonder. "In 1990, a year before the Zapatistas' armed revolt, Wendy Ewald was invited to conduct photography classes for Mayan, Ladino, and Tzotzil children living in Chiapas, the southernmost province of Mexico. The sponsoring organization was the Mayan writers' cooperative, Sna Jtz-ibajom (The House of the Writers). . . . Ewald did not take pictures; instead she guided her students in taking their own pictures of their daily lives, dreams, desires, and fantasies. . . . .the resulting project, The Devil is leaving his Cave, is a unique insight into the everyday realities of life in Mayan communities just before the devastation of the Zapatista uprising. . . This book brings together Ewald's original project with new work made in collaboration with fifteen young Mexican Americans living in Chicago, coordinated with the help of Centro Romero, an immigrant service organisation. . . . Together, the Chiapas and Chicago projects trace the differences between growing up in different Mexican geographies with diverse histories, while holding on to the universal joys and sorrows of childhood''--Publisher's website (viewed on May 16, 2022).

Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. "At first the focus of my project was my gender transition, but along the way I found out that it's about an ongoing search for myself: being a human with feelings, who is continuously developing." - Marvel HarrisMARVEL describes the journey of Marvel Harris' personal battles with mental illness, self-love, acceptance, and gender identity, all told through a searing collection of self-portraits spanning the course of five years. These photographs present a new-found visual language; a tool with which Marvel was able to express those emotions that, on account of his autism, he previously struggled to make sense of. The process of making these portraits allowed him to connect to the world around him at the time he needed it most.Winner of the MACK First Book Award 2021, MARVEL is an important new voice which contributes to an increased awareness of the issues surrounding gender identity and mental health. In doing so, this deeply personal book demands a more tolerant attitude from society towards transgender people and those who don't identify as entirely male or female. Hardcover. Signed by the artist. Olive green cloth over boards with white lettering and illustration and mounted photo on the rear cover; unpaginated; richly illustrated. This compendium of images is unhinged from the moorings of conventional narrative readings. They speak of travel, pilgrimage, epiphany and discovery with a simple, selfless stoicism. Time of day, experiments out on the water, scientific equipment, all suggest an itinerary at once mysterious and immanent, pungent and rich. A fragmented litany of objectivities forms a cohesive chain of elliptical meanings. We are complicit in the constitution of sense as each image stakes its claim upon us. This compendium of images is inspired by the dual principle of common good and necessary evil. Canadian photographer Guillaume Simoneau explores a place far removed from our everyday vanities: the Experimental Lakes Area in the sparsely populated region of northwestern Ontario. But rather than a book about the 58 pristine lakes that comprise this world-renowned natural laboratory, Simoneau's allusive photographs use the freshwater site as a means to look outwards, to consider a world beyond our own reflections. Unhinged from the moorings of narrative readings, the sequence of images floats between botanic life - aquatic and terrestrial - and hand-made apparatus used by an influential community of international scientists based in the area. The findings of their research into human impacts on entire ecosystems have significantly influenced the decisions of governments and industries. By testing, for example, the effects in the lakes of new chemical substances, they have been able to inform global environmental policies. Simoneau's elliptical documentation of their work is punctuated by sublime vistas of calm waters and pine trees, and of remarkable natural phenomena. United by an enigmatic orbital motif, the photographs in Experimental Lake lead us on an illuminating journey -- Provided by the publisher. Good+ (Boards are lightly edgeworn/scuffed/smudged; signature on title page; interior is clean; binding is solid.).

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. In this collection of idiosyncratic lessons, architect and teacher Pier Paolo Tamburelli engages with the very foundations of arch-itecture, proposing a series of new and open-ended perspectives on how we build the world. Developed for the 'Grundkurs', or 'basic course', at Vienna Technical University, Tamburelli's lessons are presented through the annotated sketches that form the basis of his lectures - variously rough and precise, sarcastic and sincere, and always uniquely expressive. This volume is a rich visual sourcebook of architectural ideas that form an accessible and discursive introduction to the discipline - one which pauses on the road to grand theories to learn from the intuitive processes of notetaking, drawing, and association.Tamburelli's lessons are based around a series of dialectic couples, including Roof/Wall, Shelter/Memory, and Language/Action. The pairs are experimental and often provocative, offering a framework to be used to climb in the direction of architecture. Tamburelli trusts in the capacity of images to suspend the restraints of more rigorous theoretical approaches, embraces the flexible wisdom of the note, and relishes the intrigue of the cryptic messages we leave for ourselves. Reproduced here in their entirety, these eight lessons offer countless routes towards, through, and around architecture, providing newcomers and experts alike with an intimate and refreshing encounter with a millennia-old discipline. With an introduction by the author and a text by Mark Lee, Chair of the Department of Architecture at Harvard Graduate School of Design An irreverent graphic introduction to the fundamentals of architecture from Pier Paolo Tamburelli, comprising eight 'lessons' inscribed in vivid sketches and hand-written notes. With an afterword by Mark Lee. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Even as a Shadow, Even as a Dream is the debut book by Academy Award-winning director Chloe Zhao (Nomadland, 2020), actor Jessie Buckley, and photographer Agata Grzybowska, created during the making of Zhaos latest film Hamnet (2025).Rooted in the expansive dream-work that shaped Zhaos creative process, the book emerges from a series of artistic rituals shared between these three collaborators, through which Zhaos cinematic storytelling, Buckleys mesmerising writings, and Grzybowskas haunting photographs were made. Brought together in this book, they conjure a parallel telling of the story of Hamnet, the son of William Shakespeare.Even as a Shadow, Even as a Dream unfolds as a quiet companion to the film: not a document of its making, but a powerful reimagining that exists somewhere in the threshold between the worlds of waking and dreaming, reality and illusion, life and death.Hamnet is in select theaters this November.First edition published by MACK, 2025 (c) 2025 FOCUS FEATURES LLCFilm (c) 2025 FOCUS FEATURES LLC Through Chloe Zhaos cinematic storytelling, Jessie Buckleys mesmerising writings, and Agata Grzybowskas haunting photographs, this book conjures a parallel telling of the story of Zhaos 2025 film Hamnet.
