He had become prosperous within a few years, bought a handsome house in Harvestehude, and was able to afford his children a carefree youth almost. With this book, his son Ernest H Sanders, who immigrated to New York in 1938, gives an account of the rise and fall of his family in Germany. The stealthy transformation from a normal civil life to a first unacknowledged persecution, which resulted in the suicide of parents on 21 September 1941, is recounted in a subtle and therefore moving way. In spite of these painful experiences, Sanders retained a close connection to his native city, which enabled him to take his final school examination in spite of contrary orders, thereby laying the foundation for his future in the United States. Paul Salomon was a successful Hamburg bank manager until 1933. He had become prosperous within a few years, bought a handsome house in Harvestehude, and was able to afford his children a carefree youth almost. This book presents an account of the rise and fall of his family in Germany. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. This third volume of State Aid Uncovered reviews the main developments in the field of State aid in 2015. The past 12 months have been full of surprising twists and turns in the evolution of the concept of State aid. EU courts have ruled on issues such as public pronouncements and State resources, while the Commission has tackled tax advantages for multinational companies and has given us new perspectives on how State aid may affect cross-border trade. Phedon Nicolaides who is Professor at the College of Europe in Bruges and the University of Maastricht, as well as Academic Director at Lexxion Training, casts a critical eye on State aid judgments and decisions of the preceding year. The book compiles articles originally published on a weekly basis on Lexxion's StateAidHub.eu. The compilation is conveniently grouped into chapters covering issues such as "Non-Economic Activities," "Selectivity," "Infrastructure," or "Recovery of Incompatible State Aid." Each article presents the main points of a court ruling or Commission decision, places them in the context of similar case law or practice, assesses the underlying reasoning, and identifies any inconsistencies or contradictions. The reader will benefit from a fairly comprehensive and easily accessible compilation of the main developments in State aid law and practice and will gain an insight in how State aid principles can be applied in practice. Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. Peeping into the night between the planks of a cattle wagon's door, young Laszlo Popper wondered with anxiety where the train, driving at full speed across the Hungarian countryside, was taking him. Over the course of World War II, there were numerous occasions for his life to find a premature end. Helped by courageous friends, warm-hearted strangers and an uncommon amount of luck, he endured persecutions, forced labour, deportation and a murderous siege, and lived to see the Red Army drive away the Nazis from his native Budapest. Fascism and war having obliterated a much of the foundations of his life, the young offspring of a respected family from the Jewish community soon turned his gaze towards Palestine. He left to follow his Zionist dream, only to find himself caught in another war. Alongside the future leaders of the country, he fought for the promise of a Jewish National Home. Many perished around him, but he survived, as did the young State of Israel. Under his chosen name of Leslie Paldon, chosen--in homage to his industrial heritage--from the Hebrew word for steel, he built himself a future with relentless optimism, in spite of all the obstacles in his way. Thus passed the years and many stories were left untold, dormant but tormenting. Decades later, the questions of his grandchildren brought them back to the surface. It was time for Leslie to break his silence. This book relates the tale of his uncommon life, of his unlikely survival.
