This gave its journalists the opportunity to visit the various war fronts with a freedom to view campaigns from all perspectives and with impartiality from the lines of several of the combatant armies. War Correspondent Arthur Ruhl dropped his fishing rod, jumped on a steamer and arrived in Europe in time to witness, from the viewpoint of the invaded, the overwhelming might of the Imperial German Army as it bore down on Belgium. He experienced the chaos as France feared for its imminent fall, and the fall of Antwerp before crossing the lines to see the war from the perspective of an elated Germany. Experiences of the German front line were followed by a journey to the east as news broke of Winston Churchill's Dardanelles adventure. After coming under fire in company with Turkish troops at Gallipoli, Ruhl concluded his tour of the maelstrom that was the Great War on the Russian Front. Ruhl's was 'an eye in the storm'-a view of a war not his own by a professional writer-making it a unique, engrossing and multi-faceted narrative of some of the most momentous events in the history of human conflict. 2007, Reprint. A remarkable man's view of three military disasters This book is comprised of the journals of an intelligence officer of the British Army written in often difficult circumstances as the events he experienced unfolded around him. Readers will note that while the focus of this book concentrates on notable events within the Great War, they also happen to be some of the worst military failures for the allies. Inviting himself into the war on the Western Front as an interpreter, he experienced the irresistible human wave of the German advance as it rolled back the outnumbered BEF from Mons. His journal was compiled from brief notes during the retreat and from memory whilst in hospital following a wound, capture, brief imprisonment and escape. The second journal concerns the disastrous Dardanelle's adventure-written 'in idle hours between times of furious action.' The author was able to view the events in which he was involved with clear insight and objectivity. At one point he wryly reports an outraged officer complaining that the Turks were walking about the Gallipoli Peninsula, 'as if they owned the place ' The third journal was written in Mesopotamia on a Fly-boat upon the River Tigris as Kut fell. The accounts within Herbert's book are of undoubted and vital interest as source material of the First World War. Herbert was an interesting character. He was half brother to Lord Carnarvon of Tutankhamen fame, he was pivotal in the cause of Albanian independence and was offered its throne on two occasions and he was intimate with several of the notable figures of his time including T. E Lawrence, Belloc, Buchan, Mark Sykes and others. A talented Orientalist and linguist-he spoke 8 languages fluently-he was also a serving member of the British Parliament throughout the war whilst also fulfilling his military duties. Perhaps most significantly Herbert achieved all this whist under the handicap of being practically blind, an affliction he had suffered from birth. The Warrior Prince of Antioch Bohemond-nicknamed because of his large size as a child-was a Norman soldier and adventurer who became a pivotal figure among the committee of nobleman leaders of the First Crusade. He learnt his military craft at the side of his father Robert Guiscard, Duke of Apulia and Calabria. Upon the death of his father, Bohemond went to war with his half-brother, Roger and his mother to reclaim what he considered his lost birthright. The outcome was a partial victory in the award of the principality of Taranto, but it was clearly not enough for a man of his enormous ambition, intellect and military prowess. The First Crusade in 1096 provided the opportunity he required. Irrespective of his religious convictions, which may have been inconsiderable from the outset, Bohemond all but led the crusade with more military success than were achieved in the two subsequent crusades. He defeated and ejected his Muslim enemies from the principal object of his ambitions-Antioch-and then held it in defiance of the claims to it by Alexius of Byzantium. The final volume of a collection of weird tales by a Victorian master of the gothic and occult In his time, the aristocratic Edward Bulwer-Lytton (1st Baron Lytton) was one of the most popular and prolific writers in the English language as well as a notable administrator who held the post of secretary of state for the colonies under Derby's government during the Victorian era. Today, few remember his works or indeed how he has left his mark on the language. For example we owe him acknowledgement for the expressions, 'the pen is mightier than the sword, ' 'the great unwashed' and for the infamous opening line of his novel, Paul Clifford, 'It was a dark and stormy night. ' This last contribution has inspired humorists for decades and even a writing competition. However, it would be unfair to Bulwer-Lytton to consider him solely by these diversions. Here was a well regarded writer of poetry and stage plays, of historical novels, mysteries, romances, science fiction and of excellently crafted tales of the supernatural and the occult-the subject of this special four volume collection from Leonaur.
