As a midshipman and junior officer he served under sail off West Africa, in the War with Mexico, and in the Mediterranean and Caribbean. As a senior officer in the river squadrons of the Civil War he saw combat at its closest. Phelps, a native of Chardon, Ohio, was a prolific and observant correspondent. His private letters, to his wife, his father, and to political patrons and other naval officers, are among the most compelling and descriptive extant. The heart of Ironclad Captain are these letters, which Jay Slagle has set in context through the judicious use of published documents, memoirs, and scholarly histories of the navy. The result is a small history of the navy and its officer corps for the middle third of the nineteenth century. Phelps's self~confidence fueled a driving ambition. He was one of the severest critics of the navy's seniority system, which seemed to thwart those ambitions. After long and often heroic service on the Western rivers, he left the navy in 1864 to pursue a less exciting career in commerce and diplomacy. Unfortunately for historians, his correspondence ends at that time as well. Notwithstanding his bitter leave~taking Seth Phelps loved his country and his service. His letters are a permanent and invaluable legacy to both.

Añadir al carritoTaschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - 'Stephen Frech's approach in these calm poems is Rilkean. A deliberate attention informs their beauty.'--Don Bogen 'In Toward Evening and the Day Far Spent, Stephen Frech takes a time-honored, traditional subject, the life of Christ, and brings it to life again. At the same time he deftly explores the divided nature of human beings--what it means to be spirit living in flesh, what it means to be incarnate. These fine, subtle, thoughtful poems again and again find the myth inside the real and the real inside the myth.'--Andrew Hudgins.

Añadir al carritoTaschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Sounding the Whale is Christopher Sten s comprehensive account of his own close encounter with Moby-Dick. Originally a long, self-contained chapter in The Weaver-God, He Weaves: Melville and the Poetics of the Novel, just published by Kent State University Press, this chapter-by-chapter study of Moby-Dick evolved as a book within a book. Sten argues that Melville not only was familiar with the traditional forms of narrative but that he refined them and appropriated them to his own original purposes. For Moby-Dick, he fused the heroic qualities of the ancient Homeric epic with the spiritual qualities of the early modern form found in Dante and Milton, then cast the whole enterprise in an unprecedented poetic prose form. Thus he formulated the first prose epic of its kind, and the only religious epic on the subject of whaling anyone is likely to write. As Melville's most ambitious novel, Moby-Dick requires careful and responsive reading. For a clear understanding of the intricacy and depth of Melville s story, of the subtleties of the quest, one is likely to need a guide. This book is that guide.

Añadir al carritoBuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - There is no doubt that this book will appeal to specialists, including conductors, recording enthusiasts, musicologists, and performers. It provides unique information about conductors' views regarding the artistic, procedural and commercial aspects of recording. Of greatest importance is the inclusion of 16 conductors who, while expressing varying viewpoints, are among the most important conductors of the past 15 years. James Badal's interview technique successfully leads the conversation into many important areas, but allows each conductor to engage in some exploration of issues unique to the individual's background, career, and areas of specialization.' Wayne Gorder, Conductor and Associate Professor of Music, Kent State UniversityIn this collection of interviews with major orchestra conductors, James Badal explores the impact of recording technology on contemporary musical culture. Spanning more than a decade with masters such a Vladimir Ashkenazy, Christoph von Dohnányi, and Christopher Hogwood, these discussions offer valuable commentary on the digital revolution and subsequent compact disc explosion. One issue addressed in Recording the Classics is how recordings have significantly raised the general public's level of musical knowledge. Classical music discs provide both entertainment and educationthe traditional, ideal vehicles for increasing the appreciation of great music among those who lack access to recital halls and opera houses. However, listening to music in private affords an essentially different experience that that of attending a live concert; both the public and the musicians are absent from the home listening environment.Badal and maestros Pierre Boulez, Ricardo Chailly, Andrew Davis, Colin Davis, Antal Doráti, Charles Dutoit, Neeme Järvi, Erich Kunzel, Erich Leinsdorf, Lorin Maazel, Kurt Masur, Simon Rattle, and Leonard Slatkin as well as Ashkenazy, Dohnányi, and Hogwood examine the effect of technology no only in the listening public's perception of music, but also on the matter in which music is made.

Añadir al carritoBuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - On July 22, 1796, General Moses Cleaveland established the mouth of the Cuyahoga River as the port of entry for the Ohio frontier. He could not have foretold the developments that would turn this hostile marsh into a thriving economic and community center. With its 200th anniversary, the port, now governed by the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority, is home to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the future Great Waters of the World Aquarium, and the Great Lakes Science Museum, as well as a Foreign Free-Trade Zone. Cleveland's Harbor chronicles the challenges, struggles, and politics of establishing and maintaining this major port - from General Cleaveland to Mayor Michael White. Among those whose dedication and ingenuity fostered the port were Lorenzo Carter, who cultivated the first settlement; Levi Johnson and the Turhooven brothers, builders of The Enterprise - Cleveland's first commercial vessel; Alfred Kelley; Governor Ethan Allen Brown, and Micajah Williams, who were instrumental in getting the canal built connecting Lake Eric to the Ohio River; John Malvin, a freedman, who became the first black vessel owner, a captain, and minister for the First Baptist Congregation; Eli Peck, designer of the forerunner of the classic ore boat; Alexander McDougall, who fashioned the innovative whaleback hull; and George Hulett, who, with the support of Andrew Carnegie and Charles Schwab, revolutionized harbor operations with his invention of the unloader.

Imagine a voice that combines hear-of-American brooding like James Wright's with a shaded elegance like Elizabeth Bishop's. Imagine Whitman's spirit somewhere in the vicinity. Añadir al carritoBuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Ohio can be a land of weather extremes. There are droughts followed by flood, arctic cold and soaring heat in one year, a Christmas warmed to 70 degrees and a Christmas white with thirty inches of snow. Ice jams on the Sandusky River and tornadoes across its southern counties, wind storms in Cleveland and floods in the Ohio River Valley inspire Ohioans to 'remember when.' Thomas and Jeanne Schmidlin, native Ohioans, have brought together data from government records, scientific studies, memoirs, diaries, and newspapers in the first comprehensive book on Ohio weather. They highlight 200 weather events from 1790 to the present; extremes of rain, snow, storms, and temperature. Anecdotal, often first person, accounts are enhanced by statistics, photographs, and maps. They describe the place of weather in popular history and folklore and how forces of nature compelled the construction of extensive flood control and weather warning systems in Ohio. Thunder in the Heartland will be of interest to climatologist, cultural historians, and all who live the weather of the Oho Country.
