Añadir al carritoCondición: Good. 2 vols, cloth, folio, 47 x 33 cm, xliii, 87 pp, colour frontispiece + viii pp, 9 colour plates (including frontispiece) and 40 monochrome plates. This is 2 volumes of a 3-volume catalogue describing and illustrating the collection of Indian miniatures belonging to Alfred Beatty, a copper mining mogul, known for owning one of the world's greatest collections of oriental and western miniatures and manuscripts. The illustrations depict the artwork of eminent Mughal court painters and artists from the 16th century and beyond and are very high quality ("The main feature of the catalogue was all along intended to be the illustrations, which were to be of the highest possible quality. They speak for themselves, and it is to be hoped that their fidelity as facsimiles, which can be vouched for, will be appreciated by scholars." - from the introduction). Illustrated with 9 colour plates and 40 monochrome plates to volume III, and a colour frontispiece to volume I. Volume I contains the text, and volume III consists of plates (nos 53-100, illustrating Manuscripts nos 7-18). The manuscripts whose plates appear in Volume 3 are the following: 7. Royal Albums, circa 1605-1658 - plates 53-72; 8. Silsilah Al-Dhahab 73 ; 9. Majma'al-Ghara'ib. Middle of 17th Century 74; 10. Nayrang-I-'Ishq, 1690 75; 11. Separate Miniatures of Mughal, Hindu, and Provincial Schools 76-93; 12. Dastur-I-Himmat, Circa 1719-1748 94,95; [13. Kulliyyat of Sa'di, 1646 -not illustrated]; 14. Khamsah of Nizami. Early 17th Century 96; 15. Diwan of Hafiz. Early 17th Century 97; 16. Bahr Al-Hayat. Late 16th-17th Century 98; 17. Shah-Namah of Firdawsi. End of 16th Century 99; 18. Yusuf U Zulaykha of Jami. Middle of 18th Century 100. [Volume II, containing plates 1-52 illustrating manuscripts nos 1-7, is lacking]. From a contemporary review of the catalogue by H. Goetz in The Burlington Magazine: ".thanks to the scrutinizing and learned investigations of Sir Thomas Arnold, everything possible has been done to abstract the greatest amount of information from [the manuscripts]. There is a detailed description of each manuscript and portfolio, its history and general condition, subject and arrangement, size, paper, calligraphy, date, illuminations and illustrations; in the same way the events, personages, etc., depicted in each painting are explained and the inscriptions sometimes found on them have been translated. .Sir Thomas Arnold has written an excellent Introduction to the pictorial art of the Mughal period .It is . a catalogue prepared and published in a manner which it would be difficult to overpraise." Covers somewhat rubbed and stained and slightly darkened, a little bumped at spine-ends and corners, Plate 53 has tears at the hinge (not affecting image or causing looseness), contents otherwise Very Good indeed.…

Añadir al carritoRoxburghe morocco spine and maroon boards, folio, top edge gilt, title-page in red and black, 29 cm, xxxi, 427, pp, 4 plates (including 1 tipped-in). Edited by Henrietta Tayler from a manuscript in the possession of Lord James Stewart-Murray, the text furnishes a detailed account of the well-known expedition of Prince Charles Edward Stuart ('Bonnie Prince Charlie' to Scotland in the year 1745 in the vain hope of recovering the crown of Britain for his father, James Stuart, the Old Pretender. From the introductory note: "There is no clue as to the author, save what may be obtained from internal evidence, but there is not the slightest doubt that it is almost contemporary with the events narrated, and that it has not previously been printed, nor even seen by Jacobite scholars and historians." Despite this being a wartime production, the paper, typography, printing and binding are all up to the usual Roxburghe Cub standard. An excellent copy with a double Kenyon family provenance. Originally Sir Frederick Kenyon's second member's copy, with his name printed in red in the List of Members and his signature on the front free endpaper. Subsequently bought from his daughters by his cousin Lord Kenyon (his pencil note recording this on the front free endpaper) and with his blue "Lloyd Kenyon" booklabel on the front pastedown endpaper. One spot of wear to fore-edge of front board, and minor scuffs to spine, otherwise Near Fine. Sir Frederic George Kenyon (1863-1952) was a palaeographer and biblical and classical scholar and sometime Director and Principal Librarian of the British Museum. His cousin Lloyd Tyrell-Kenyon, 5th Baron Kenyon, (1917 - 1993) was a hereditary peer, and museum administrator and politician. He was the driving force behind the revival of the revival of the Gwasg Gregynog Press, and its chairman from 1978 to 1991. He was himself a member of the Roxburghe Club, the two cousins overlapping for only 4 years but between them providing a member from 1913 to 1993.…
