This reference helps collectors identify these tokens. Publishers Description: Most transport tokens in Scotland were introduced in the middle of the 19th century, but until recent years they did not attract many collectors. The collecting and study of tokens has now very much become a branch of numismatics. The early tokens were usually struck in brass, copper or bronze, but as we moved into the 20th century celluloid ones were introduced. From celluloid, various forms of plastic and fiber have been used as well as various metals, and this has continued right up to the present day. Tokens were in fact the tickets of their time. Paper tickets did not come into use until about the 1880s and in Glasgow on the tramways from the late 1870s. By selling a number of tokens, transport firms were assured of the custom of these passengers. This also saved the conductor--or guard as he was sometimes called--from handling cash and was thus also a security precaution.

The Real Photo Postcard Guide is an informative, comprehensive, and practical treatment of this wildly popular American phenomenon that dominated the United States photographic market during the first third of the twentieth century. Robert Bogdan and Todd Weseloh draw on extensive research and observation to address all aspects of the photo postcard from its history, origin, and cultural significance to practical matters like dating, purchasing, condition, and preservation. Illustrated with over 350 exceptional photo postcards taken from archives and private collections across the country, the scope of the Real Photo Postcard Guide spans technical considerations of production, characteristics of superior images, collecting categories, and methods of research for dating photo postcards and investigating their photographers. In a broader sense, the authors show how "real photo postcards" document the social history of America. From family outings and workplace awards to lynchings and natural disasters, every image captures a moment of American cultural history from the society that generated them. Bogdan and Weseloh's book provides an admirable integration of informative text and compelling photographic illustrations. Lenci Manufacturing was established by Enrico Scavini and his wife Helen KÃÂ nig Scavini in 1919, for the production of dolls and "toys in general, furniture, furnishings and children's layettes"; but even for the production of a special kind of fabric used for furnishings, tapestries and dolls, better known as "pannolenci" felt. In 1927 the company decided to expand its production to a line of figurines and objects in enamelled ceramic. In 1928, this led to a very rich catalogue of statuettes and objects that immediately became the fashion for Italian middle and upper classes. In order to attain this goal, the manufacturing company availed itself of the creative collaboration of important Turin-born artists such as Sandro Vacchetti, Gigi Chessa, Mario Sturani, Abele Jacopi, Ines and Giovanni Grande, Felice Tosalli and even the owner of the company herself, Helen KÃÂ nig Scavini, who was responsible for the creation of a successful series called "Signorine": female photography of the Turin bourgeoisie during the full-blown 1930s. Lenci's ceramic sculptures gained their inspiration from contemporary fashion magazines, amidst traditional scenes, figures of young captivating and mischievous women that described the tastes of an era and of a society. Sportswomen, actresses, but even courtly scenes, partner dances, rustic and mythological themes, fairy-tales, grotesque and funny-looking children, female nudes bordering on affectedness and playfully provocative women are the visual archive of a community balanced between alternating historical events during Italy's Fascist period -- becoming the unavoidable status symbols in Italian middle-class parlours. The Ferrero Collection is the most important collection in the world dedicated to the Lenci manufacturing company: this volume is dedicated to the Collection, and so is the exhibition staged on the premises of the International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza.

The eight volumes in this boxset reveal the manifold creative talents of Renà Lalique, an exceptional artist, Art Nouveau jeweler, and later Art Deco glassmaker, as well as those of his successors and the many people who perpetuate these skills in the present day. Illustrating previously unpublished works, Lalique retraces the history of Lalique and its founding family. For Lalique is a famous name: Renà , 'the inventor of the modern jewel', as Emile Gallà described him at the close of the nineteenth century. After working from home as a designer for large firms, Lalique opened his own workshop, where he created objects in the round using previously neglected materials, such as horn, semi-precious stones, enamel, and glass. These already featured the themes that would recur throughout his career: Female, Flora and Fauna, with the addition of a fourth 'F', Form, with the advent of Art Deco. From a very young age Renà Lalique enjoyed drawing, observing nature closely and making sketches. Although his most detailed works were undoubtedly his jewelry designs, drawing was to remain an indispensable prerequisite to his creations. Lalique found an outlet for his creative genius in all sorts of everyday objects, including lamps, paperweights and tableware, magnifying their importance and rendering them wholly exceptional today. Renà Lalique also turned his hand to decoration and the creation of monumental works. Whether designing the stained glass for a chapel, an imposing fountain for the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts held in Paris in 1925, or objects for railway trains or ocean liners, he was always keen to create with glass and to play with light.
