The earliest and still most widely used method of identification of cancer tissue or cells is the structural resemblance of cancer tissue to fetal or immature tissue. Thus, poorly differentiated tumors that resemble fetal tissue generally grow more rapidly and metastasize earlier than do well-differentiated tumors that more closely resemble adult tissue. Increas ingly, products of cancer cells similar to fetal products are being identified and studied. When boiled it becomes slightly opaque . . . . etc. ' Dr. Jones found that heating of the urine after addition of nitric acid resulted in formation of a heavy precipitate; acid ad dition may have been required to bring the urine to pH 4-6 at which Bence Jones proteins are more likely to precipitate when heated. McCarthy), but my hopes soon faded, and when I read an excellent review on the subject which covered much literature, and ended by saying that biochemists had grown tired of 'fishing in distilled water for the causes of mental disease,' I realised that I had better find something more worthwhile. It evolved from a colloquium held in October 1977, under the sponsorship of the Lincoln Institute. The three-day symposium entitled 'Land Policy: Making the Value Choices' involved the preparation of major papers and formal discussions, most of which appear here in considerably revised form, along with additional pieces commis sioned later. The colloquium was an idea jointly conceived by myself and Edward Wood, a colleague at the time in the Tufts University Program in Urban Social and Environmental Policy. We were concerned about two major limitations in the literature and debates over land use. On the one hand, there was little explicit recognition of the latent values that motivated land use policy. On the other, there was no common forum where people from the different land use fields could discuss the issues and learn from one another. A small group of about two dozen people was invited to the colloquium. Each member was a leading spokesman for a different perspective and area of expertise. Consequently, the ex ponential distribution became basic to research associated with experiments on life expectancy. Further research has shown that there are a whole series of problems in reliability theory for which the exponential distribution is inapplicable. However, it can practically always be used as a first approximation. The ease of computational work due to the nice properties of the exponential distribution (for example, the lack of memory property, see Section 1) is also a reason for its frequent use. The number of publications increases yearly, but all the experimental results-with the possible exception of some dealing with recognition of printed characters-report a probability of error significantly higher than that reported for the same images by humans. It is widely agreed that ideally the recognition problem could be thought of as a problem in testing statistical hypotheses. However, in most applications the immediate use of even the simplest statistical device runs head on into grave computational difficulties, which cannot be eliminated by recourse to general theory.
