Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -by Ronald G. Corwin What do the following have in common: regulatory agencies, magnet schools, a declining empire, puritan asceticism, plea bargaining, the recent tax revolt in California, the Boston Tea Party, the Vietnam War, public drinking halls during Prohibi tion, police entrapment, and Yosemite National Park on Labor Day weekend If the answer is not readily apparent, read this engaging book. Dr. Sam Sieber makes a convincing case that harbored in a potpourri of such events are countless instances of how well-intentioned social interventions often produce harmful effects. Searching for a general framework that will force us to think of heretofore discrete events in new ways, he has chosen to use the term 'intervention' in its broadest sense. His approach is a superb example of how serious schol arship can produce a new creative synthesis from familiar knowledge when the scholar is guided by a lively curiosity. The wide-ranging subject matter of this book provides a re freshing vision of social reform movements and programs. I think that Sieber has succeeded in doing what he set out to do: namely, to develop a general and inclusive typology for cl- ix x RONALD G. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - This book is about compressing data to make digital systems work more effi ciently. According to the dictionary, when something is compressed, it is con densed, squeezed, constricted, or pressed together to fit into less space. Air is compressed for a variety of useful purposes. Businesses are downsized to make them more efficient. We pack our daily schedules tighter and tighter to accomplish more. Who has not crushed an empty soda can for recycling Many different things can be compressed, including the data in computers, communications links, consumer-electronics gear, and all sizes and shapes of digital systems. Are you curious about how data compression squeezes the 'air' out of digital bits Would you like to know where it is used and, increasingly, why the marketplace demands it be used Would you like to learn the right way to build data compres sion into your products Then, this book is for you. This exciting technology and its importance for current and future digital systems are explained in easy to understand terms. No previous knowledge of data compression is required because the necessary technical background is carefully developed. Neither is an extensive understanding of mathematics be cause there are few equations and important ideas are graphically illustrated. If you read any of the popular or professional monthly magazines that cover the latest advances in digital systems, your background is adequate. If you understand this preface, you are ready to tackle this book.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - since the earliest results on the linkage between ras activation and cell transformation appeared a vast amount of additional information has been generated which emphasizes the importance of ras-related genes in membrane trafficking, cell proliferation, differentiation and cancer. These advances led to the development of new strategies for the diagnosis, prognosis and prevention of cancer. Ras-related genes appear to be central to the mechanism of transformation by other oncogenes and therefore constitute a focal point upon which attempts to intervene in the process of carcinogenesis will be concentrated. The present volume contains the contributions to the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on the 'The Superfamily of ras-Related Genes' held in Agia Pelagia, Heraklion, Crete, Greece, May 1991. At this meeting the leading researchers in this field carne together to discuss the most recent progress in analysis of biological function of the ras-related genes. As an organizer I feel that the Workshop was a success, and would like to thank all the participants and the contributors to this volume. I thank the NATO Scientific Affairs Division, Brussels, the Greek Ministry of Industry, Energy and Technology, the International Center for Cancer Research, the National Hellenic Research Foundation and the Medical School, University of Crete for sponsoring the Meeting. …

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - This volume records the papers presented in Chieti, Italy, at the 1991 meeting of the International Society for Arterial Chemoreception (ISAC). This was the eleventh of a series of assemblies held since 1959. This field of research, which examines the critical function and mechanisms of O and pHIPC0 sensitive cells in 2 2 the body, is unique in that it encompasses diverse biological and medical areas. The reader of this book will note chapters concerning modem techniques like in situ hybridization; analysis of cell membrane channels and intracellular ion movements; immunohistochemistry of peptides, hormones, and the corresponding receptors of chemoreceptor cells; and systemic analysis of reflex pathways involving chemoreceptor cells and their meaning in health and disease. This broad spectrum will appeal to readers interested in the chemoreceptor field, as well as young scientists seeking a scientific field where not only structural analysis but also a sense for functional connections is required. In recognition of the importance of the contribution of a new scientific generation to this field, ISAC awarded the prestigious F. de Castro-C. Heymans E. Neil prize to A. G6rlach, a young scientist. Also at this meeting, the Ferdinando Data Foundation Award, for helping scientists from non-developed countries to pursue their interest in chemoreception, was initiated. ISAC held plenary lectures in honor of C. Eyzaguirre and R. Forster, both of whom have contributed greatly to research in the chemoreceptor field.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Mankind is living through a crucial period of its history. An arms race without precedent in intensity and duration, which developed in the postwar period, has left on our planet enor mous stockpiles of weaponry, which, should they be used in war, could cause irreparable damage to world civilization and even threaten the human race with extinction. Hence the most vital and urgent task in the world today is to end the arms race-as well as the mutual mistrust, tension, and hostility that it gener ates in relations between states. The Soviet Union and other countries of the socialist com munity have for many years concentrated their foreign policy efforts on clearing the dark and putrid atmosphere of the Cold War which poisoned relations between states with different social systems. Guided by the great Lenin's teachings, we have worked consistently for simple, reasonable, and realistic princi ples of peaceful coexistence, mutual respect for sovereign rights, and mutually beneficial cooperation to prevail in these relations. We have sought to counter the policy of alienation and hos tility among nations, resulting in the world balancing on the brink of war, by encouraging a transition to normal, courteous relations, to peaceful cooperation based on equality-in short, to what is now termed detente. Such is, in effect, the primary aim of the foreign policy guidelines established by the last two congresses of the Com munist Party of the Soviet Union-the 24th and 25th-known as the Soviet Peace Program. 216 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -From July 31 to August 13 a NATO Advanced Study Institute on Photosynthesis was held at the Anargyrios and Korgialenios School on the Island of Spetsai. Greece. The Institute focused on techniques and recent advances in photosynthesis research and brought together teachers and students with a wide range of interest and experience. It was a very stimulating occasion which allowed cross-fertilization to occur between biophysicists. biochemists, molecular biologists and physiologists. Lectures and discussions ran~ed from the description of the molecular structure of the photosynthetIc bacterial reaction centre and of tobacco Rubisco through to the regulation of carbon metabolism and the application of genetic engeering. This book is comprised of the contents of the major lectures and a selection of relevant posters displayed at the Institute. Taken together the book is an excellent representation of the most up to date thoughts and activities in photosynthesis research across a wide, but interlocking. spectrum of topics. The papers presented here are a written record of the high quality of both the lecturers and students alike and emphasises the value of the NATO ASI series as a reference source. The successful organisation of the Institute and the production of this book would not have been possible without the support of our colleagues. We therefore wish to thank Pam Cook, Lyn Barber. Niki Gounaris, Alison Telfer. Sotiria Nikolaidon, David Chapman, Steven Mayes and Wei Qiu Wang for all their help during the course of the Institute. 628 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -About four or five years ago one began to hear about the enormous interest being taken in on-line consoles and displays. Nothing much was done with them, but computer men felt that this was the way computing ought to go: one might dispense with cards, and overcome many of the problems of man-machine communication. It quickly appeared that, as with computers, there had been a great under estimation of the amount of work involved, of the difficulties of programming, and of the cost. So it began to emerge that graphics was not the ultimate answer, in spite of superb demonstrations where one might watch a square being converted into a cube and then rotated. But my mind goes back to 1951 and the first computers. There, there were demonstrations of arithmetic speed and storage facility; but not much idea of actual use. However, we now understand how to use computers, and in the last year or two, significant developments in the field of graphics have led to genuine applications, and economic benefits. The equipment is still expensive, but it is becoming cheaper, more uses are being found, and f believe that we are just at the stage when the subject is gaining momentum, to become, like computers, a field of immense importance. 256 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Waves critically affect man in coastal regions, including the open coasts and adjacent continental shelves. Preventing beach erosion, designing and building structures, designing and operating ships, providing marine forecasts, and coastal planning are but a few examples of projects for which extensive information about wave conditions is critical. Scientific studies, especially those in volving coastal processes and the development of better wave prediction models, also require wave condition information. How ever, wave conditions along and off the coasts of the United States have not been adequately determined. The main categories of available wave data are visual estimates of wave conditions made from ships at sea, scientific measurements of waves made for short time periods at specific locations, and a small number of long-term measurements made from piers or offshore platforms. With these considerations in mind, the National Ocean Survey of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration sponsored the Ocean Wave Climate Symposium at Herndon, Virginia, July 12-14, 1977. This volume contains papers presented at this symposium. A goal of the symposium was to establish the foundations for a com prehensive and far-sighted wave measurement and analysis program to fully describe the coastal wave climate of the United States. Emphasis was placed on ocean engineering and scientific uses of wave data, existing wave monitoring programs, and modern measure ment techniques which may provide currently needed data. 384 pp. Englisch. …

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Targeting of drugs via carrier systems to sites in the body in need of pharmacologic intervention is a rapidly growing area of research in the treatment or prevention of disease. It has evolved from the need to preferentially deliver drugs, enzymes, vitamins, hormones, antigens, etc. to target cells and organs so as to avoid toxicity, waste of drugs through premature secretion or inactivation and at the same time render treatment more convenient and cost-effective. A wide assortment of naturally occ urring or semi-synthetic drug carriers (e. g. antibodies, glycoproteins, lectins, peptide hormones, cells and liposomes), their inter action with relevant receptors and mediation of optimal pharmacological action were discussed in the two previous NATO Advanced Studies Institutes (ASI) of this series, 'Targeting of Drugs' and 'Receptor-Mediated Targeting of Drugs', the proceedings of wh ich were published by Plenum in 1982 and 1984 respectively. This book contains the proceedings of the 3rd NATO ASI 'Targeting of Drugs with Synthetic Systems' held as be fore at Cape Sounion, Greece during 24 June-5 July 1985. It deals mostly with man-made carriers such as a variety of polymers, matrices, liposomes and other colloidal micro particles. The twenty chapters discuss the interaction of such carriers with the biological milieu, approaches to bypass the reticuloendothelial system (or, when needed, take advantage of its interception of carriers to optimally deliver drugs to phagocytes) and ways to improve delivery to specific cells, often with the help of carrier-linked ligands. 308 pp. Englisch.…

Also, most of the major rivers (the Mississippi in U.S.A., the Rhine in Europe, the Volga in U.S.S.R., the Ganges in India, etc.), because they flow through agricultural land or urban and industrial areas, have become highly contaminated with chemicals (3). This leaves us with shrinking resources of sweet surface water. A consi deration of biomembranes and their structure led us to organize a self-supporting course in 1972 under the gen eral sponsorship of the American Oil Chemists' Society on 'Fundamentals of Lipid Chemistry.' This course con cluded with important papers on lipoproteins, membrane structure and membrane models. The papers presented at the short course were published under the same title. With the background of the lipid course, a third program was developed entitled 'Biomembranes - Lipids, Proteins and Receptors' and held as a NATO Advanced Study Insti tute in 1974. This ASI explored the structure of bio membranes and the relationship of non-lipid components to membrane function. This ASI was also published to provide the conference proceedings to interested scien tists who could not attend. 428 pp. Englisch.…

An awareness of the use and misuse of each model system is important for a rational interpretation of data and for a reasonable comparison of data obtained from different model systems. With the use of clonal lines of neuronal cells and hybrid neural cells (neural cells x nonneural cells), many new concepts have emerged con cerning the regulation of differentiated functions, the relationship between the expressions of individual differentiated functions, and the relationship between differentiation and malignancy. Some of these concepts have already proved to be relevant to regulation of differentiation in vivo. These new emerging concepts are discussed extensively in this book. Many new agents (physiological and nonphysiological) which induce or increase the expression of one or more differentiated functions have been identified. These agents will be useful biological tools for further studies of the regulation of differentiation in mamma lian nerve cells. This book describes the role of each agent in d- vii viii PREFACE ferentiation of nerve cells by focusing on different model systems and provides a rational basis for selecting the particular differentiating agents for specific problems of differentiation processes. 260 pp. Englisch.…

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The changing role of industry, the trend towards automation, the in creased cost of raw materials and labour rates all emphasize the need for improved quality of manufacture which will lead to better reliability, reduced maintenance costs and incidence of failure, as well as greater consumer confidence. Many countries, including Japan, are noted for their high quality of manufacture. This has helped them monopolize the world radio and television market and achieve great in-roads into the motor industry. If other economies are to compete effectively against such competition, then improvements in quality and performance of products are necessary. The need for control of quality embraces many fields from design, manufacture, function testing and inspection, through to an understand ing of sampling procedures and sampling theory, embracing both employee and management responsibilities to the maintenance of quality. The aim of this book is to give an understanding of industrial quality control. The techniques described have been selected so that they may be applied to industrial problems. It is hoped and expected that these methods will lead to improvements in quality and economics of manufac ture, thus leading to increased productivity and profitability. 9 1 The Need for Quality Control The major goals for quality control are manifold and include a need to determine the real functional tolerances required for engineering specifications and to provide a plan for control of the quality of the results of a process related to time. This is normally achieved by statistical or control chart methods. 264 pp. Englisch.…

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Sir Richard Doll, FRS, FRCP ICRF Cancer Research Studies Unit Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford, UK The twentieth century has seen few changes more remarkable than the improvement in health that has occurred nearly everywhere, most spectacularly in the economically developed countries. In these countries improved nutrition, better housing, the control ofinfection, smaller family sizes, and higher standards of education have brought about a situation in which more than 97% of all liveborn children can expect to survive the first half ofthe three score years and ten that formerly was regarded as the allotted span oflife. From then on, however, the position is less satisfactory. Some improvement has occurred; but the proportion of survivors who die prematurely, that is under 70 years of age, varies from 25% to over 50% in men and from 13% to 28% in women, the extremes in both sexes being recorded, respectively, in Japan and Hungary. Most of these deaths under 70 years of age must now be called premature, even in Japan. For most of them are not the result of any inevitable aging process, but instead are the consequences of diseases (or types of trauma) that have lower-often much lower-age-specific incidence rates in many of the least developed countries. 480 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The romantic phase of membrane biochemistry characterized by conceptual develop ments and an essentially unlimited freedom of choice is gradually coming to a close. Attention is turning from the general, qualitative description of membrane structure toward the specific properties of membrane-linked enzymes and metabolic systems. The purpose of this series is to serve this development by collecting and evaluating the mass of interesting information that is already available widely scattered in the literature. The emphasis will be upon a comprehensive treatment of membrane linked enzymes from the viewpoint of modern enzymology. The general properties of membranes will be mentioned only to the extent that they are relevant to the dis cussion of the enzymes in question. The first of the four volumes will deal with the physical and chemical techniques (X-ray crystallography, nuclear magnetic and electron spin resonance, fluorescence spectroscopy, immunology, etc.) used in the characterization of membrane enzymes. Chapters are also included on artificial bilayer membranes, chemical modification of membrane enzymes, and on the nature of lipid-protein interaction in membranes. In the next three volumes the enzyme systems participating in the biosynthesis of cell components, active transport, oxydative phosphorylation, and photosynthesis will be analyzed. A brief discussion of hormone receptors is also included. Subsequent volumes may fill in the few but significant gaps in the coverage that for various reasons could not be avoided. 272 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Dynamic modeling is the fundamental building block for mechanism analysis, design, control and performance evaluation. One class of mechanism, legged machines, have multiple closed-chains established through intermittent ground contacts. Further, walking on natural terrain introduces nonlinear system compliance in the forms of foot sinkage and slippage. Closed-chains constrain the possible motions of a mechanism while compliances affect the redistribution of forces throughout the system. A General Model of Legged Locomotion on Natural Terrain develops a dynamic mechanism model that characterizes indeterminate interactions of a closed-chain robot with its environment. The approach is applicable to any closed-chain mechanism with sufficient contact compliance, although legged locomotion on natural terrain is chosen to illustrate the methodology. The modeling and solution procedures are general to all walking machine configurations, including bipeds, quadrupeds, beam-walkers and hopping machines. This work develops a functional model of legged locomotion that incorporates, for the first time, non-conservative foot-soil interactions in a nonlinear dynamic formulation. The model was applied to a prototype walking machine, and simulations generated significant insights into walking machine performance on natural terrain. The simulations are original and essential contributions to the design, evaluation and control of these complex robot systems. While posed in the context of walking machines, the approach has wider applicability to rolling locomotors, cooperating manipulators, multi-fingered hands, and prehensile agents. 132 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This two week course on Arterial Pollution covered the field of atherosclerosis as a disease entity, and includes its anatomical, physiopathological, epidemiologic, preventi ve and therapeutic aspects. With the cooperation of an outstanding group of inter national lecturers we have been able to present an overview of the disease and its accidents as it stands today. Such a scope differs greatly from the narrow workshops which only consider biochemical disorders, e.g., the lipoproteins or the risk factors. We believe it was timely to study the entire physiopa thological entity of arterial pollution and we included all aspects of the disease in one single sweep. We are grateful to the Nato Advanced Institute Programs for accepting this topic on the list of their sponsored initiatives and especially Mr. di Lullo for his personal care. Whether we succeeded was proved by the audience to the Nato Advanced Study Institute at Maratea in September 1981 and will become clearer through the audience these proceedings will gain in the medical community. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -When I was getting my medical and psychiatric training in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the model of normal and deviant adolescent development was the white male. This was not surprising, since for every clinical or psychological study of adolescent girls done during the past 2 decades, there were seven studies on adolescent males. This tremendous discrepancy in actual clinical and research data between male and female adolescents led to the following myths: (1) Female adolescents are different only biologically from their male peers; they have similar psychosocial problems; (2) Adolescent girls have not been studied because their problems are not worth studying; (3) Studying adolescent girls might be dangerous to either the patient or therapist, or to both. In relation to the third myth, male psychotherapists were told that they should not treat female adolescent patients because erotic inter play could develop, which would be harmful to the patient and per haps impossible to resolve. Many clinics in the United States had a rule that young adolescent girls could not be treated by male therapists. It was thus difficult for girls to obtain treatment-for most therapists were males. It also intensified the feelings among parents, teachers, v vi Foreword community leaders, and the girls themselves that perhaps female adolescents were not worth treating. 280 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Computer graphics is being used to an increasing extent in the biological disciplines. As hardware costs drop and technological developments intro duce new graphics possibilities, researchers and teachers alike are becoming aware of the value of visual display methods. In this book we introduce the basics of computer graphics from the standpoints of both hardware and software, and review the main areas within biology to which computer graphics have been applied. The com puter graphics literature is vast, and we have not been able to give a full course on graphics techniques in these pages. We have instead tried to give a fairly balanced account of the use of graphics in biology, suitable for the reader with some elementary grounding in computer programming. We have included extensive references both to material cited in the text and to other relevant publications. One of the factors that has fuelled the increase in graphics use is the ease with which the more simple graphics techniques may be implemented on microcomputers. We hav.e, therefore, paid attention to microcomputer graphics as well as graphics techniques suitable for larger machines. Our examples range from simple two-dimensional graph plots to highly complex surface representations of molecules that require sophisticated graphics devices and mainframe computers on which to run. The book is separated into two logical sections. The first part con centrates on general graphics techniques, giving an overview from which the reader will be able to refer to other more specialised texts as required. 224 pp. Englisch.…

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -During the 1976 Fall Meeting of the American Physiological Society Dr. Lahiri and I learned that no plans were being formu lated for holding a symposium on Respiratory Control during the 1977 International Congress. Not to hold such a symposium, we felt, would be the loss of a unique opportunity for us 'regula tionists' to exchange ideas viva voce with our international colleagues. It would also break a tradition most recently enjoyed at Srinagar, India in 1974 and at Warsaw, Poland in 1971. After a time-consuming false start we had the good fortune to get advice from Dr. Pierre Dejours to make our plans known to Dr. Henry Gautier. This we did. There resulted an excellent three days of discussion and hospitality at the Faculte de Medecine Saint-Antoine in Paris immediately preceding the International Congress. The aim of the co-chairmen was to gather an international mixture of both the younger and more senior experts to discuss, argue, and maybe even agree on a point or two arising from their current investigations. We wanted to feature, however, recent research trying to determine the influence of sleep and anesthesia on the regulation of respiration. That the sessions were lively and presumably profitable was never more in evidence than when on the second day at 6:15 p.m. after fully nine hours of discussion, argumentation, and some agreement I counted 78 participants still participating. 464 pp. Englisch.…
