"133 illustrations, including 50 plates in full color". biographical outline. photo credits. selected bibliography. index. art history. biography. american history. impressionism. painting. ~ Art history has no more remarkable story to offer than the life and artistic achievement of Mary Cassatt (1844~1926). In an age dominated by the conventions and prejudices of Victorian society, this young Philadelphian from a conservative upper~middle~class background made her way to Europe and became the first and only American artist to be part of the French Impressionist revolution that was taking place in Paris. Determined almost from childhood to be an artist, Cassatt had enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts when she was sixteen. Six years later, she prevailed upon her family to allow her to study abroad. Though she received some formal instruction in Paris and the provinces, her most important teachers for the next few years were the old master paintings in the museums of Europe. In 1868 her first painting was accepted for the Paris Salon. In 1874 a painting of hers shown in the Salon caught the attention of Degas, who remarked, "There is someone who feels as I do." Degas's invitation to the thirty~three~year~old Cassatt to join the Impressionists, in 1877, was the beginning of a forty~year association at once close and stormy~and to this day enigmatic. A staunch supporter of the Impressionist movement in the face of public derision, Cassatt showed her work in four of the historic Impressionist exhibitions. Devoted to the new realism and to portraying the life of her own day with candor and boldness, Cassatt was untypical in her preference for figure painting. Her dramatic theater scenes, psychologically telling studies of women, and fresh, original mother and child oils, pastels, drawings, and prints won increasing acclaim. Though she lived permanently in France, Cassatt always thought of herself as an American; she encouraged Americans to buy Impressionist and old master art and was influential in the forming of several American collections. An avowed champion of the cause of women, she was selected to paint a mural on the theme of "Modern Woman" for the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. …

Her father, E. I. du Pont, had come from France and in 1802 settled on the banks of the Brandywine Creek, four miles above Wilmington, where he set up a gunpowder manufactory. A period of ten years in the family life of the du Ponts, newly settled in Delaware, is illumined by Sophie's letters, diaries, and sketches from 1823 (when she was thirteen) to 1833 (when she was twenty~three), which have been discovered in the du Pont family and company archives and organized into this charming book by its two researcher authors. Life in the du Pont household, as in that of any immigrant family, was colorful, the flavor of the old country mingling with the flavor of the new. In a home whose ambience was French, Sophie met many notable Americans as her father's reputation grew and his gunpowder establishment took on increasing importance. There were interesting neighbors, too, and surrounding them all was the wild natural beauty of the shores of the Brandywine. All this was recorded by Sophie. She had a quick, inquiring mind, a ready sense of the comic and the ridiculous, and a genuine feeling for nature. Most important, for her and for us, she had graphic skill. Her caricatures (she called them "carics") gave her a means of self~expression during her critical teen years and provided entertainment for her brothers and sisters and her close friends. Readers today will be both entertained and informed by Sophie's vignettes, written and drawn, and will be touched by the insights they give into the thoughts of a very young woman coming of age in a very young country. …
