Añadir al carritoAdelman, Clifford. No loaves, no parables; liberal politics and the American language. New York: Harper's Magazine Press in association with Harper & Row, 1974, stated First Edition, xii, 291pp., very good dust-jacket, very good orange and blue hardcover. Dust-Jacket design by Judith Nissenbaum. From the Seventh Ward of Chicago in the spring of 1968 to the day McGovern almost lost Massachusetts, too, in October of 1972, Cliff Adelman's personal critical history listens hard to the unwitting yet tragic process by which the New Politics separated itself from "The People." And not since Orwell has such a deep and searing indictment of the political uses of language by liberals emerged. With large doses of humor, frustration and outrage, Adelman takes us through a number of liberal campaigns and political conventions of those years, and into retrospective 1973 interviews with many of their participants. He is always listening to how things are said, and always asking why they are said that way. Holding that language (parables) determines both perception and policy (loaves), Adelman convincingly argues that because the new liberals are falsely distrustful of language, and ignorant of its human possibilities, both their programs and their persuasive potential breathe but ashes and salt. All is not bleak, however. Communication registered - though the votes did not - when the literary men took over from the lawyers, statistic addicts, and procedure-bound Reformers. Back in 1969, Adelman felt and heard the strains in the Mailer-Breslin campaign in New York. He suggests that liberals turn back a few pages and start listening there, too, Watergates or no, if they are to meet political success over the next decade. 9780061200502 ISBN 0061200506. …

DJ has light shelf-wear present to the DJ extremities (spine label present to the spine). Bound in cloth boards with titles present to the spine. Boards have light shelf-wear present to the extremities. Previous owner's bookplate present to the FFEP. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. John Baggs, Yeoman 2/c, USN, is detached from his ship and sent to the naval hospital in Portsmouth, VA. , for treatment of a painful cyst. At the hospital, Baggs's pain abates, the cyst turns out to be a false alarm, and, to boot, hospital authorities lose Baggs's personnel records. Without those files, Baggs is a non-person as far as the Navy is concerned. He leads a rather Kafkaesque existence, eating, sleeping, living in the hospital while the bureaucratic machinery of the service grinds on in search of his records. Weeks become months, and eventually the hospital authorities grant Baggs a nightly pass to leave the hospital and go into greater Norfolk. His "Cinderella liberty" requires that he return to the hospital at midnight every night. WIthout much fanfare, Baggs meets Maggie, a Norfolk bargirl with three children. They set up housekeeping, despite the fact that Baggs has to subsist on whatever money he can cadge from fellow hospital patients and on "leftovers" he can bring from the hospital mess to feed the kids. (No records, no payday. ) When Maggie becomes pregnant, she and Baggs wed, despite the fact that the Navy won't recognize the marriage. E-251; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 179 pages. …
