Hardcover. Condición: New. Language: English. About the book:-The author reveals that this is the first modern monograph to draw together all the strands of India's architectural history - from the Vedic and native traditions of early India, through Hindu, Buddhist, Islamic and secular architecture, to the eclecticism of the Bri…tish Raj. An understanding of Indian history and religion is the basis for the understanding of the complex pattern of relationships in the evolution of its architecture. Therefore, the background material covers major invasions, migrations, dynastic conflicts and cultural and commercial connections, the main religious developments and their significance and repercussions, and external architectural precedents. While avoiding the usual misleading division of the subject into "Buddhist and Hindu" and "Islamic" parts the importance of religion, symbolism and myth to the development of characteristic Indian architectural forms is fully explained. This book, for the first time instead of looking at Indian architecture from the point of view of dynasties, periods or religions, examines the various functions of Indian architecture and traces the various developments in the field beginning with the Indus Valley Civilization under the heads of settlement patterns, houses, residences, palaces, funerary monuments, and religious structures. Within settlement patterns, the author looks at rural and urban patterns and the linkages between the two. He explains regional and period-specific phenomena, while also quoting from ancient accounts of towns.Hundreds of photographs, engravings, and plans and elevations produced to a set of uniform scales are closely integrated with the text, resulting in a book which expresses the richness and complexity of Indian architecture. The present volume is the outcome of a life-long fascination with India. About the Author:-James Fergusson FRS (1808 1886) was a Scottish-born architectural historian, mainly remembered for his interest in Indian historical architecture and antiquities. He was an important figure in the 19th century rediscovery of ancient India. He was originally a businessman, and though not formally trained as an architect, designed some buildings and decorative schemes. He received the gold medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1871. Among his works, besides those already mentioned, are: Palaces of Nineveh and Persepolis restored (1851), Mausoleum at Halicarnassus restored (1862), Tree and Serpent Worship (1868), Rude Stone Monuments in all Countries (1872), and The Temples of the Jews and the other Buildings in the Haram Area at Jerusalem (1878). The sessional papers of the Institute of British Architects include papers by him on The History of the Pointed Arch, Architecture of Southern India, Architectural Splendour of the City of Beejapore, on the Erechtheum and on the Temple of Diana at Ephesus. Hardcover. Condición: New. Language: English. About the book:-The author has made a noble attempt to draw a fine sketch on this subject. The subject of this rare and valuable book is to give learned notes on the geography of Gandhara (in the district of Peshawar Region), as described by the Chinese pilgrim Huang Xang (Hiuan- tsa…ng) over 1200 years ago. The exceptional interest both from the historical and archaeological point of view presented by the high road of all the old conquerors of India and by the inexhaustible mine of the best Greeco-Buddhist sculptures known, would be, if such were necessary, the ancient geography of the country of Gandhara, famous for the Greco-Bactrian school of the Buddhist sculpture. We were, therefore, able to verify on the very spot, the accuracy of his account and to acquire some familiarity both with his methods of travel and the topography of the country. If it be allowed that the best way of identifying the itinerary of Hiuan-tsang in this country is to follow his wanderings it will then, we believe, be admitted that we are perhaps qualified to offer on this subject some notes which will at the same time throw some light upon the ancient Geography of Gandhara. There are numerous illustrations in this book that show sculptures, railings, ground plans, natural features, architectural remains, etc. There is a map of the Gandhara region at the end of this book, which was first published in 1915. About the Author:-Alfred Charles Auguste Foucher (18651952), was a French scholar, who identified the Buddha image as having Greek origins. He has been called the "father of Gandhara studies", and is a much cited scholar on ancient Buddhism in northwest Indian subcontinent and the Hindu Kush region. His most famous work was L'Art Greco-Bouddhique du Gandhara in which he described how Buddhist art prior to Pan-Hellenism was principally aniconic, representing the Buddha by depicting elements of the Buddha's life instead of depicting the Buddha himself. He agued that the first sculpted images of the Buddha were heavily influenced by Greek artists. He coined the term "Greco-Buddhist art". Harold Hargreaves (born 29 May 1876) was a British Indian archaeologist who served as Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) from 1928 to 1931. The Title 'Notes On The Ancient Geography Of Gandhara: (A Commentary On A Chapter Of Hiuan Tsang) written/authored/edited by A. Foucher', published in the year 2021. Hardcover. Condición: New. Language: English. About the book:-These tables are published for those at work with inscriptions and historical documents in Southern India to understand the dates mentioned in stone. Dates from the 6th century are given here in tables that tell the corresponding date in the Salivahana Saka era, Kaliy…uga era, the Kollam era, the Christian era as well as the Hijri dates.TheseTables are published in order to enable those at work on the Inscriptions of Southern India readily to ascertain the date of any document, or record on stone. The Salivahana Saka era being the one most commonly used, it is placed in the first column. The Kaliyuga era is very commonly nsertedin addition to the first, especially in the later inscriptions. The Kolla'm era of Quilon is only used in the Southern Tamil country and in Travaneore. The name of the cyclic year occurs in almost all the inscriptions of Southern India since the tenth century. The year of the Hijra is only used in Muham madan inscriptions. Burnell's "South Indian Palaeography "(pp. 7080) contains some very useful, notes on the eras in use in the Madras Presidency. Prinsep's "Indian Chronological Tables," inThomas's edition of the former's "Indian Antiquities " (Vol. II, pp. 131214), constitute the mostcritically accurate information yet published on the subject. Taking the Saka, Kaliyuga, and cyclic yearswhich may be considered, for all ordinary purposes, to commence and finish simultaneouslyas his base, he has thought it best to approximate the other eras to these, rather than to approximate all eras to the Christian, as is often done. And, since the Saha,Kaliyuga, and cyclic years may be considered to commence together about March each year, it follows that the Kollam of Quilon, which commences about September, runs half with one, and half with another of the former years; while the Christian year, commencing in January, runs three-quarters with one, and a quarter with the following of those standard years. About the Author:-Robert Sewell (18451925) worked in the civil service of the Madras Presidency during the period of colonial rule in India. He was Keeper of the Madras Record Office and was tasked with responsibility for documenting ancient inscriptions and remains in the region. As with other British administrators of his type at that period, his purpose was not scholarly but rather to bolster administrative control by constructing a history that placed British rule as a virtue and a necessity rather than something to be denigrated. His specialism was the Vijayanagara Empire, about which he authored A Forgotten Empire Vijayanagar: A Contribution to the History of India (1900). The Title 'Chronological Tables For Southern India From The Sixth Century A.D. written/authored/edited by Robert Sewell', published in the year 2021. Hardcover. Condición: New. Language: English. About the book:-The following Paper is a Report to the Government of Madras under whose orders and by whose sanction the excavations at the Amaravati Tope were conducted in 1877. It is printed by the kind permission of the Secretary of State for India in Council, with the view of obv…iating the inconvenience and delay which would be caused by submitting it in manuscript. It is earnestly to be desired that the marbles still in India belonging to this magnificent monument should be transmitted to England. The defaced and damaged specimens now in the British Museum are considered of such value by that great Antiquary and Architect, James Fergusson, that he has devoted half his splendid work on "Tree and Serpent Worship" to their consideration; but the exquisite specimens still existing in India, are as superior to them as highly polished marble is to very inferior stucco. The stones in India have clear, polished, smooth surfaces, many of them with every line of carving as fresh as when they left the sculptors' hands. Those in England are so defaced as to be almost unrecognisable, while the marble has so deteriorated by careless exposure that it looks like badly whitewashed limestone. If the slabs in England are so valuable, what would not be thought of those now in India? It is impossible to exaggerate the difference in their condition. The book contains four illustrations to delineate the text properly. The book is the product of extensive study and research of this report which is proved to be handy to the students and researchers. Paperback. Condición: New. Language: English. ABOUT THE BOOK:- The Grammar of Hindudom lays out the historical and philosophical framework of Hindudom, the only ideology indigenous to India and Asia. Few in the world appear to know this, leave alone appreciate it. There are also those who reckon that the ideology of Hindudom is…the only one if accepted by those who have the ability to influence the course of events that can achieve enduring peace on earth. The basic purpose of this book is to explain why this would be so. The Grammar of Hindudom also seeks to engage a very contentious term at the root of much of the disquiet prevalent todaysecularism. The credo of secularism, which has its origins in Europe, means the separation of the Church from the State. The book offers the reader a glimpse brief into the Abrahamic family of religionsJudaism, Christianity and Islam, and their fourth sibling, Marxism, and how they have shaped human history with all their attendant consequences. Unlike these, Hinduism does not have a founder, a single prophet or any single holy book. Hindudom, which loosely means the Hindu way of life, is the way a polity can or ought to govern itself. A closely corresponding term is Christendom. Hindudom is not confined to modes of religious worship or social norms and customs. It encompasses the entire gamut of politics and governance. Hindudom is arguably the only ideology that has the capability to not only end global conflict but help human beings achieve the goal of self-actualization, which alone can bring about true inner peace. Paperback. Condición: New. Language: English. About the Book;-The author reveals that the origin of the Jaffna kingdom is obscure and stills the subject of controversy among historians. Among mainstream historians, the widely accepted view is that the Kingdom of the Aryacakravarti dynasty in Jaffna began in 1215 with the invasio…n of a previously unknown chieftain called Magha, who claimed to be from Kalinga in modern India. He deposed the ruling Parakrama Pandyan II, a foreigner from the Pandyan Dynasty who was ruling the Kingdom of Polonnaruwa at the time with the help of his soldiers and mercenaries from the Kalinga, modern Kerala and Damila (Tamil Nadu) regions in India. After the conquest of Rajarata, he moved the capital to the Jaffna peninsula which was more secured by heavy Vanni forest and ruled as a tribute-paying subordinate of the Chola empire of Tanjavur, in modern Tamil Nadu, India. This prompted the Pandyan Empire in modern South India to intervene and Chandrabhanu submitted to Pandya rule in 1258. Portuguese traders reached Sri Lanka by 1505 where their initial forays were against the south-western coastal Kotte kingdom due to the lucrative monopoly on trade in spices that the Kotte kingdom enjoyed that was also of interest to the Portuguese. The Jaffna kingdom came to the attention of Portuguese officials in Colombo for multiple reasons which included their interference in Roman Catholic missionary activities, (which was assumed to be patronizing Portuguese interests) and their support to anti-Portuguese factions of the Kotte kingdom, such as the chieftains from Sittawaka. The Jaffna Kingdom also functioned as a logistical base for the Kandyan kingdom, located in the central highlands without access to any seaports, as an entry post for military aid arriving from South India. The book is the product of extensive study and research of Jaffna. About the Author:-Swamy Gnanaprakasar Nalloor was a Sri Lankan-born reputed author, translator and compiler. He is mostly remembered for his outstanding work in the Sri Lanka's ancient history and literature. He is the author of -- A Critical History of Jaffna. Hardcover. Condición: New. Language: English. About the Book:- In this little book the author have brought together a few sketches of the things that are nearest to the heart of the millions. From the school of Pundits certain thought have gone forth which in a more or less vague form have become an integral part of the peoples'… stock of ideas. Something therefore has been said of these, but not much. The main part has been to show what has been the worthiest answers given by the Hindus to the great questions of man's relation to God and fellow man. In the humble way these books shall be the ambassadors of good will and understanding between East and West, the old world of thought and the new of action. Hardcover. Condición: New. Language: English. About the book:-The following sketch of the history of Kashgharia, and supplementary description of the country, have been prepared for submission to Government at the request of Sir Douglas Forsyth, late Envoy and Plenipotentiary to the Court of Kashghar. The work has been compiled…from such authorities and materials as were accessible at the time, coupled with the results of personal enquiry and observation on the spot during the stay of the Embassy in the country. These from the nature of the case, it will be understood, were found as limited as the time itself at his disposal and, though no labour has been spared in reducing the mass of materials collected into a consecutive and at the same time brief form, there has consequently been no attempt to enter into lengthy detail. This last result could only have been accomplished had he enjoyed the advantage of a reference to European and Oriental libraries, and a sufficient leisure to study the subject. He trusts, however, that the history and description of this, to us, new region, such as they are, will be found to contain some interesting and useful information, and serve to convey a correct knowledge of the past events and present condition of the country to which they relate. The ancient history of this region, which constitutes no mean portion, as regards superficial extent at least, of that vast territory indicated by the comprehensive term Central Asia, is enveloped in the doubts of obscurity that surround all ancient history. About the Author:-Henry Walter Bellew MRCP (1834 1892) was an Indian-born British medical officer who worked in Afghanistan. He wrote several books based on his explorations in the region during the course of his army career and also studied and wrote on the languages and culture of Afghanistan. He was with the Bengal Army, assistant surgeon in the Bengal Medical Service, and was posted along with Harry Burnett Lumsden and Peter Lumsden on the 1857 mission to Afghanistan. He was in Mardan with the Corps of Guides in the 1860s, and was then in Peshawar as a civil surgeon. He was appointed political officer at Kabul. In 1873-1874 Bellew participated in the Second Yarkand Mission led by Thomas Douglas Forsyth. The Title 'The History Of Kashgharia written/authored/edited by H. W. Hardcover. Condición: New. Language: Sanskrit,English. About the Book:-The Malavikagnimitra furnishes us with a vivid picture of a native court in the most flourishing period of Indian history, probably about the third century after Christ. An attempt was indeed made by the late Professor Wilson to show that the play could not h…ave been written before the tenth or eleventh century, and was therefore not the work of the great Kalidasa. So far from the internal evidence being against the traditional belief that the play is the work of the great Kalidasa, a great many coincidences of style and thought between this and the other works attributed to him are pointed out by the above mentioned scholars. This book is a five-act drama written by Kalidasa in the 5th century CE. The story is a light tale set in a harem, and, unlike Kalidasa's other works, it sustains a playful and comical mood throughout. It concerns the machinations of King Agnimitra to win Malavika, a female dance student with whom he is in love. Believed to be Kalidasa's first work, it is the love story of King Agnimitra and the court dancer Malavika. The tale unfolds through humorous palace interludes, vivid descriptions of fine arts and the cunning machinations of court players. Even in this early work, Kalidasa's characteristic penchant for romance, art and natural beauty are evident at every delightful turn of the plot. He transforms a simple tale of forbidden love into an engrossing courtly drama filled with beauty, humour and wit. About the Author:-Kalidasa was a Classical Sanskrit author who is often considered ancient India's greatest playwright and dramatist. His plays and poetry are primarily based on the Vedas, the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the Puranas. His surviving works consist of three plays, two epic poems and two shorter poems. Much about his life is unknown except what can be inferred from his poetry and plays. His works cannot be dated with precision, but they were most likely authored before the 5th century CE. Scholars have speculated that Kalidasa may have lived near the Himalayas, in the vicinity of Ujjain, and in Kalinga. This hypothesis is based on Kalidasa's detailed description of the Himalayas in his Kum?rasambhava, the display of his love for Ujjain in Meghad?ta, and his highly eulogistic descriptions of Kalingan emperor Hem?ngada in Raghuva??a (sixth sarga). Paperback. Condición: New. Language: English. About the Book: - While preparing the script of both the volumes of this work the author has made an elaborate attempt to draw a sketch in a beautiful manner, keeping consistency and compactness in mind to arouse a lot of interest among the readers. It is the only comprehensive work…on Ceylon yet published is the apparently exhaustive account by the late Sir Emerson. The speculation as to Sumatra, or rather the Archipelago, and Ceylon having been formerly united, and that the Island is not a dismembered part of the Peninsula of India, brought forward by the author, founded on the difference between the fauna of Ceylon and India, has been the subject of some discussion among the naturalists. The country is now known in Sinhala as ?r? La?k? and in Tamil as Ila?kai. In 1972, its formal name was changed to "Free, Sovereign and Independent Republic of Sri Lanka". As the name Ceylon still appears in the names of a number of organisations, the Sri Lankan government announced in 2011 a plan to rename all those over which it has authority. So, both the volume of this book is immensely good to all. About the Author: - Horatio John Suckling was born in 1822 in Britain. He was a British author. He was first appointed as a clerk and later he became a British civil servant. He was deputed in Sri Lanka. During his staying in then Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, he observed everything about the inhabitant's traditions, customs, habits and religion which he portrayed in both the volume of this discourse. He is the author of Anti-Darwin and it was published in 1888. Hardcover. Condición: New. Language: English. About the Book:-The object, in this additions, having been to show the probability of the antiquity of Hindoo Medicine in connection with Indian commerce, independent of the proofs afterwards adduced, some repetition will perhaps appear to have been unnecessarily introduced ; this wa…s in some measure inseparable from the cumulative nature of the argument adopted, in proceeding from comparatively modern to more ancient times ; but partly caused by the interruptions, amidst which this essay has been written. These circumstances are mentioned in hopes of obtaining the reader's consideration, as well as to account for the imperfections of the work, in connection with its title. About the Author:- John Forbes Royle (1798 1858), British botanist and teacher of materia medica, was born in Kanpur (then Cawnpore) in 1798. He was in charge of the botanical garden at Saharanpur and played a role in the development of economic botany in India. He was the only son of William Henry Royle and Isabella Forbes. While still a child, his father died and Royle studied under Sangster of Haddington before going to study at Edinburgh high school. He was influenced by Anthony Todd Thomson to take an interest in botany and natural history. In 1823 Royle was appointed as Superintendent of the botanical garden at Saharanpur which had been established by the East India Company in 1750 with the aim of promoting the introduction of new crops of commercial value. Hardcover. Condición: New. Language: English. About the Book:-Human minds seem to have almost exhausted their reasoning powers in producing all kinds of arguments that can be given both for and against the existence of God. For hundreds of years philosophers, scientists, and theologians among all nations have been bringing forwa…rd proofs either to show that there is such a Being as God or to deny His existence entirely. Of course most of the arguments and proofs in favor of the existence of God are convincing to those who already have some sort of belief in the Creator or some conception of the Supreme Being. If we have been brought up in an atmosphere where there prevails a belief in God as the Creator and Ruler of the universe or as an extra-mundane Being who, dwelling outside of nature, command everything and directs the movements of the world, then unconsciously we breathe in and imbibe that behef from our childhood, and as we grow older we accept all the arguments and evidences that we can find in support of this preconceived idea. If we have already a conception of God as the First Cause, then all the inductions and inferences which maintain that idea will naturally appeal to us and we shall take them for granted. About the Author:-Swami Abhedananda (2 October 1866 8 September 1939), born Kaliprasad Chandra, was a direct disciple of the 19th century mystic Ramakrishna Paramahansa and the founder of Ramakrishna Vedanta Math. His father was Rasiklal Chandra and his mother was Nayantara Devi. In 1884, at the age of 18, while studying for the school final examination under the University of Calcutta, he went to Dakshineswar and met Sri Ramakrishna. Thereafter, in April 1885, he left home to be with him, during his final illness, first at Shyampukur and then at Cossipur Garden-house near Calcutta. Hardcover. Condición: New. Language: English. About the Book:- The inscriptions of Coorg, though few in number, are of importance, especially the earlier ones. It is true they tell us little about the Kodagas, or Coorgs, themselves. Nor was this to be expected, for the Coorgs are naturally an unlettered race; their very language… having no written characters1; and although the predominant class, they form no more than one-fifth of the population. The earliest express mention of the Kodagas that has been met with in inscriptions is in 1174, in the time of the Hoysala king Vira-Ballala (Hs 20). They are also mentioned in 1722, in the time of Chikka Deva-Raja of Mysore (Sr. 64). But the name Kudakam (Coorg) apparently occurs in Tamil literature so far back as the 2nd century; and the Seven Kombu of Sk 136 may have reference to Coorg in 1068. The earlier inscriptions show that the Jain faith was exclusively the State or court Religion at first. The followed the Saiva and Vaishnava creeds; and lastly the Vira-Saiva or Lingayit form of Saivism. All this while the Coorgs no doubt, as now kept to their own Ancestor and Demon worship. About the Author:- Benjamin Lewis Rice CIE (1837 1927), popularly known as B. L. Rice, was a British historian, archaeologist and educationist. He is known for his pioneering work in deciphering inscriptions, especially in Kannada, and in Sanskrit inscriptions in the Kingdom of Mysore. Rice's researches were published as the voluminous Epigraphia Carnatica which contains translations of about 9000 inscriptions he found in the Old Mysore area. Rice also compiled the much acclaimed Mysore Gazetteer which still remains the primary source of information for most places in Mysore and neighbouring Coorg. Rice served with distinction in the Mysore civil service and as first Director of the Mysore State Archaeology Department. The Title 'Coorg Inscriptions written/authored/edited by B. Hardcover. Condición: New. Language: English. About the book:-The author has the honour to submit the accompanying Report on the Archaeological Survey of the Bombay Presidency for the past season. The scheme proposed by the Gibbs and approved by the Government of Bombay contemplated his employment to survey the whole of the Cave… Temples of Western India, including also surveys of some at least of the more interesting Brahmanical and Jaina remains. The field indicated in this Minute, including, as it did, Ajanta, Elora, and other groups of caves, etc., in the Haidarâbâd territory, fully met the main object of the Despatch of 11th October 1871, and allowed of his utilizing the whole of the collections he had made privately in preceding years. The Governmentof India, however, in sanctioning the scheme of the Honourable Gibbs, introduced a clause limiting the area of research to the Bombay Presidency only, thus cutting off Ajan?â and other groups of caves just outside the limits of the Presidency, and so rendering impossible the contemplated production of a complete work on the"Rock-Cut Temples of Western India." This limitation, however, he has no doubt will be reconsidered. For the inscriptions he fully counted on being able to obtain the use, at least, of the volume of photographed inscriptions from the Kanarese Districts, which would have been of the greatest service to him in showing what had already been satisfactorily done, what had better be recopied, and, indirectly, what other inscriptions might be copied, perhaps, for the first time. They supply at least a new chapter in the history of Indian architecture from the sixth to the eighth or ninth century. But it must be borne in mind that these materials do not adequately represent the antiquities of the Kanarese country. They only open up a field that would amply repay a much wider and more detailed survey than he had the means or the time to make. The book contains 44 photographs, twenty are inserted in the Report, with a selection from the drawings and most of the inscriptions. About the Author:-James Burgess CIE FRSE FRGS MRAS LLD (1832 1916), was the founder of The Indian Antiquary in 1872 and an important archaeologist of India in the 19th century. He did educational work in Calcutta, 1856 and Bombay, 1861, and was Secretary of the Bombay Geographical Society 1868-73. He was Head of the Archaeological Survey, Western India, 1873, and of South India, 1881. From 1886-89 he was Director General, Archaeological Survey of India. In 1881 the University of Edinburgh awarded him an honorary Doctor of Letters (LLD).He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1894. ABOUT THE BOOK Awadh was not one of the provinces which figures prominently in the political history of the Mughal Empire, at any rate after the early years of Akbar's reign to the end of Aurangzeb's. It gained in prominence under the Nawab Wazirs, in the 18th century and thereafter…claimed attention still more as classic example of a native state under the subsidiary system of the East India Company. Its administration was stridently criticized by British officials, who particularly condemned the state of agrarian society under the Awadh rulers, and used this criticism as one of the justifications for the annexation of Awadh in 1856. It is difficult to find much to commend in the kingdom of Awadh during the early nineteenth century. Yet, despite the manifold evils by which it was beset, the Awadh system was not one of the total spoilation or anarchy as has been described by its critics. Its very ineptitude protected the peasants and the zamindars of Awadh from the extreme distress which the mahalwari system of the colonial rule imposed contemporaneously on the adjoining ceded and conquered provinces. The study serves as the background to understand Lord Canning's proclamation and subsequent policies the British Crown adopted to win over the belligerent landed overlords of this region and provided numerous concessions to the class of talluqadars. Based heavily on the Persian archival data, family papers, and the British official records, the study hopefully provides some corrective to much of the larger literature available on the subject. Hardcover. Condición: New. Language: English. About the Book:- Buddhism Its History and literature book. It is a compilation of the first six lectures delivered on Buddhism by Prof. T. W. Rhys Davids during the winter of 1894 - 1895 in Universities of Boston, New York, Brooklyn, Baltimore, Columbia, and Philadelphia. It contains… lectures on religious theories in India before Buddhism, The literature behind the knowledge of Buddhism, Notes on Buddha's life, and the history and secrets of Buddhism. It was strange, and very characteristic of the real meaning of true Buddhism, that there was no life of Gautama the Buddha in the Buddhist scriptures. Buddhism should not be treated as a religion such as is understood by those who regard religion as consisting of certain beliefs and ideas concerning the soul and its destiny and of the various deities who are supposed to help or hinder human beings in the attainment of the ultimate goal. About the Author:-Thomas William Rhys Davids FBA (1843 1922) was an English scholar of the Pali language and founder of the P?li Text Society. He took an active part in founding the British Academy and London School for Oriental Studies. In 1863 Rhys Davids returned to Britain, and on passing his civil service exams was posted to Sri Lanka (then known as Ceylon). When he was Magistrate of Galle and a case was brought before him involving questions of ecclesiastical law, he first learned of the P?li language when a document in that language was brought in as evidence. In 1871 he was posted as Assistant Government Agent of Nuwarakalaviya, where Anuradhapura was the administrative centre. The governor was Sir Hercules Robinson, who had founded the Archaeological Commission in 1868. The Title 'Buddhism: Its History and Literature written/authored/edited by T . W . Hardcover. Condición: New. Language: English. About the Book:-The World Missionary Conference, held at Edinburgh, was not only an inspiring experience of a lifetime to those who had the privilege of taking part in it, but it was an outward symbol of an awakened zeal and of a new spirit of union, which was catholic both in its sc…ope and character (at least one eminent Roman Catholic Prelate expressed his sympathy with the objects of the Conference) such as would not have been possible at any previous period in the history of Christendom. One important lesson of the Conference was the need of a more extensive study of missionary problems on the part of those interested in the extension of Christ's kingdom. If this need is to be met, an increase of our missionary literature must take place, and the literature which already exists must be revised in the light of the increasing knowledge of the missionaries who are engaged in the work abroad. The number of Hindus who are well versed in English literature 15 daily increasing, and the Eastern and Western nations are daily being drawn closer together. Not only do Indian Christians read the works of English theologians, but Hindus are keenly interested in various branches of English literature. Still , both Christians and Hindus are far too apt to ignore the study of the religions of their own country the former from a perhaps not unnatural feeling that , as they have discarded Hinduism, they may neglect the scientific study of that religion; and the latter from a thirst for all the new knowledge which the West opens out to them.
