Neuware -Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2010 in the subject Sociology - Media, Art, Music, The University of Malaya, language: English, abstract: Written with librettist, Joseph von Sonnleithner, Beethoven¿s first version was divided into three acts in the style of a German Singspiel. In a singspiel, a fresh start has to be made after every spoken interruption. Fidelio was first performed on November 20, 1805 after being delayed due to issues with the censors. The opera opened to a small audience and negative reviews.A year later Beethoven attempted a revision of Fidelio for the same theatre. Due to a change in management Beethoven was presented with a new librettist by the name of Stephan von Breuning. After a great deal of struggle, a very reluctant Beethoven agreed to a much more condensed and concise version of the opera. The newly revised version was performed on May 29, 1806. Again the audience was not Beethoven¿s ideal audience and the show failed once again. After reading a refined libretto by Georg Friedrich Treitschke, Beethoven agreed the revival but insisted on a complete revision in which he virtually started over. Nearly every number was altered in some fashion. The third and final version of the opera opened with great success on May 23, 1814.It took Beethoven over a decade to complete his only opera. Throughout the many revisions he produced four different overtures. The first, now known as Leonore #2 was written for the operäs premiere in 1805. Because some sections proved to be too difficult Beethoven began reworking the overture for the operäs revival in 1806. The new version became known as Leonore #3. Beethoven¿s final revision composed for the 1814.Production was called the Fidelio Overture. After his death a fourth overture was found. Entitled Leonore #1 it is believed he either wrote it first or for a production of Fidelio in Prague that never happened. Leonore #3 is often played between the two scenes in Act 2. However, many critics such as Henry W. Simon consider this practice to be ¿abhorrently inartistic¿ due to the dramatic nature of the piece.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 24 pp. Englisch.

During his academic years at The Paris Conservatory he failed Harmony three consecutive years, and tried five times to win Prix de Rome but luck was not with him so he did not succeed. In spite of these anguished moments in his life he did not give up and continued his work with strong commitment and determination which brought him to the spotlight later on. His era stats at the end of Romanticism, goes through the Impressionism and ends in the modern period. The French language directly and, the French culture indirectly have deep impact on his style and work. Great music has universal language. It does not matter in which language it has been performed as long as it leaves deep throbbing, thrilling and emotional impression on the audience and the listeners it is considered great. Each listener interprets the music in accordance with his or her own talent, understanding and wisdom, thus there is no single interpretation of music. The performance of the artist, his or her emotions, his or her style, language in which he or she performs and the aesthetic taste of the listeners play an important role in making opinion about great music.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 20 pp. Englisch.

Many seek to reorder war-shattered countries strategically according to best Western practices. One suchstrategy is to redraft the constitution which will then form the legal basis of a country for decades to come. The present study investigates the link between the type of constitution building process and the durability of peace. Neuware -Essay from the year 2009 in the subject Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict, Security, grade: 1,9, Macquarie University, language: English, abstract: Moreover, the large-scale attack of 9/11 proved that the former generally accepted maxim of ¿terrorists want a lot of people listening and not a lot of people dead¿ (Jenkins, 1985, p. 6) is not meeting the reality anymore. However, it is in question if these incidents really point towards a trend among terror groups to obtain and use WMD in order to achieve their political or religious aims. Nonetheless, WMD-terrorism became a political priority, particularly in the United States since the Clinton administration declared ¿(t)he acquisition of weapons of mass destruction by a terrorist group is unacceptable. There is no higher priority than preventing the acquisition of this capability or removing this capability from terrorist groups¿ (Clinton, 1995). Regardless of this political development, there is an extensive scholarly debate whether WMD-terrorism poses a new apocalyptical threat due to the ¿availability of information and expertise, heightened frustration of terrorists, demonization of target population, or messianic vision¿ (Ivanova & Sandler, 2007, p. 274) or whether the use of chemical, biological, nuclear or radiological agents (CBRN) by terrorist groups is exaggerated by the media or governmental and law enforcement agencies. However, it is necessary to recognize the differences between radiological / nuclear and chemical / biological agents since ¿these weapons differ greatly in their ease of production, in the challenges they pose for deterrence, and in the effectiveness of defensive measures against them¿ (Chyba, 2002).The purpose of this paper is not to present a comprehensive survey of the possible threat assessments or potential counter measures. Rather, it will analyze what kind of terrorist groups are more likely to use CBRN for their purposes and what motivation determines the decision either to use or to restrain from the use of CBRN agents. Furthermore, this essay will examine the actual capabilities necessary to weaponize chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear material and the difficulties for terrorists to get to this stage.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 20 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,7, University of Bonn (Anglistik), course: Hauptseminar, language: English, abstract: 1. IntroductionWilliam Shakespeare is the most important playwright of the English Renaissance period. His career bridged the reigns of Queen Elizabeth I and James I. When the play Julius Caesar was first performed in 1599 at the Globe theatre1, Queen Elizabeth I had been on the throne for nearly 40 years. She was 66 years old at that time and she, like Caesar, did not have any children. People feared what would happen after her death. Shakespeare commented on this political situation by writing Julius Caesar. Censorship did not allow direct comments on contemporary political affairs. 2 Julius Caesar is the shortest play by William Shakespeare full of fast action and rhetoric. It takes place in ancient Rome in 44 B.C. It was a time when the empire suffered greatly from a clear division between citizens represented by the senate and the plebeian masses. The people feared that Caesar's power would lead to Roman citizens being slaves. That is why Caesar was assassinated. This paper will deal with the commoners and their treatment by the tribunes in the opening scene of the play. It will also give an insight into the speeches of Brutus and Antony and their effects on the plebeians in the second scene of the third act.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 20 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, University of Heidelberg (Anglistik), course: Proseminar 1 London, language: English, abstract: This paper tries to provide an insight into the analysis of 18th century author William Blake¿s poem `London¿.Comments from Blake experts like the following from Edward Thompson make this task appear easy. He said: ¿`London¿ is among the most lucid and instantly available of the Songs of Experience.¿ On the one hand I agree to this statement. The poem itself is easy to understand, not much background information about the author¿s life, his visions, and his complete works is required to grasp the message. However, an analysis has to provide more than just make the message of a poem understandable. It should inter alia deal with the circumstances the author lived in, the work of which the poem is part of, and last but not least, the stylistic devices and linguistic images used in this piece of art.In the case of `London¿, this has been done by professionals many times, a fact leading us to another important point that makes the task appear easier than it actually is: The mass of biographies, comments, analyses, and criticisms that have been written about Blake and his works. The advantage is obvious: Every line of `London¿ has been discussed and commented on, and all that must be done is find adequate information. At the same time this amount of literature presents many different approaches to analyse the poem; too many to introduce them in a seminar paper. Hence, this assignment tries to show a few aspects only: After introducing the author and the `Songs of Innocence and of Experience¿ briefly, it follows a short summary of the poem and an overview of the stylistic devices. The sixth chapter is the analysis itself, focusing on the social criticism of the poem and dealing with the ¿very complex relations between reading, and hearing, and seeing¿.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 20 pp. Englisch.

The problem, however, is often presented largely simplified and there is a tendency to perceive recreational drugs as an unequivocal social evil and overestimate the role of the state in managing the problem. For some obvious reasons, Soviet historiography largely ignored the history of drug addiction in twentieth-century Russia, but it is striking that even today there is a clear lack of attention towards historical roots of the problem in this region and various cultural forms of drug use. This condition will appear even more surprising if we consider that interdisciplinary research on the history of drug addiction will allow the exploration of the intersection of medical theory, practical policy, social context, and cultural values. In my paper I focus specifically on the early Soviet period of Russian history which witnessed the emergence of drug addiction as a social problem (ca. 1917 - 1929). I analyze early Soviet medical texts related to recreational drugs in order to show how physicians argued for the elimination of drug addiction. First, it is necessary to understand why Soviet physicians decided that it is important and indispensable to fight drug addiction. I also look on specific measures (professional medical and non-medical alike) that the doctors proposed to solve the social problem of drug addiction.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 20 pp. Englisch.

While the scope of this paper includes the effectiveness and efficiency of the 'European Union Baltic Sea Region Programme' (EU BSRP) in reference to one of its priorities, 'fostering innovation¿ for economical growth in the Baltic Sea Region, the programme's relative novelty in design and strategic relevance, given by the fact of promulgation of a 'European Union Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region' (EU STRAT BSR) parallel to implementation of EU BSRP, point out to a demand for further investigation on the fact that the EU BSRP is an innovation by itself concerning regional policy as 'macro-regional cooperation' within the framework of the EU. This paper will address firstly the EU STRAT BSR and its potential effects on the strategic environment in the Baltic Sea Region in particular and on European level in general by scrutinizing the second programmatic 'pillar', making '[¿] [t]he Baltic Sea A Prosperous Place', due to its reference character for the economic yield of the strategy. This short description and analysis of EU STRAT BSR is followed by an outline of the EU BSRP by providing an account of innovation policies in the Baltic Sea Region. Two research questions will serve as a guideline along the descriptive part and as reference to the analysis: Is political innovation in terms of transnational macro-regional cooperation also innovative and rewarding from the perspective of current economic research on innovation and according policies, meaning: Does it foster growth And secondly, for the sake of the scope of European Studies, are EU STRAT BSR and EU BSRP able to perform even up to their political Level of Ambition Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 28 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Essay from the year 2010 in the subject Health - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,7, University of Southern Denmark, language: English, abstract: Begrifflichkeiten, wie z.B. die ¿Humanitären Interventionen` sind häufig anzutreffen. Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 16 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg (Institut für Anglistik), course: Children's Literature, language: English, abstract: In her book The Second Sex (Beauvoir 1953: 362) the world-famous French philosopher and feminist Simone de Beauvoir writes that¿[t]he adolescent girl will devote a special love to Nature: still more than the adolescent boy, she worships it. Unconquered, inhuman Nature subsumes most clearly the totality of what exists. The adolescent girl has not yet acquired for her use any portion of the universal: hence it is her kingdom as a whole; when she takes possession of it, she also proudly takes possession of herself.¿The idea of nature as a safe haven and retreat where a young girl refuges to and repeatedly finds solace and empowerment also penetrates children¿s literature. What Annis Pratt calls The Green-World Archetype (Pratt 1981: 16-24), ¿an adolescent girl who lives close to nature, is one of the most common female protagonists in children¿s fiction¿. (Nikolajewa 2002: 332)Nature features prominently in the novels of the 20th century Canadian authoress Lucy Maud Montgomery best known for her classic girl¿s book Anne of Green Gables. In all of her books Montgomery¿s protagonists are female heroes. The heroines of her novels and short stories vary from each other in age. Out of her twenty-one books eleven focus on female protagonists in late childhood or early adolescence of about nine to approximately eleven years of age. (Epperly 1992: 7)A prominent theme that runs through all of those novels is the development of self-confidence of the, at the outset of the story, powerless young heroine. Throughout the storylines each one of the young girls ¿learns to value herself in relation to the surrounding community and culture¿ (Epperly 1992: 7) - and nature, more precisely the fictionally adapted landscape of L.M. Montgomery¿s beloved Prince Edward Island, seems to play a vital part in that process. In her monograph The Fragrance of Sweetgrass Epperly states that in the first book of the Anne of Green Gables series ¿three quarters of the novel¿s nature descriptions are offered as though through Anne¿s eyes¿. (Epperly 1992: 18) What is true for Anne of Green Gables can also be observed in Montgomery¿s other children¿s fictions. Throughout her books the Canadian authoress enables the reader to perceive nature through the eyes of her adolescent or child heroines; thus enabling us to detect what kind of effects the natural surroundings might have on the female protagonist¿s psyche and psychological development while she is growing up.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 24 pp. Englisch.

Neihardt. Largely considered to be an autobiographical narration, it has become one of the most famous books dealing with the story of individuals of Native American origin. Following the tradition of so-called ¿as-told-tö stories (Georgi-Findlay 1997, 385), it is the story of the Lakota holy man Black Elk, who told it to the author John G. Neihardt who transcribed it and wrote it down. The story, and its categorization as autobiographical, claims authenticity, and was widely regarded to be an accurate report of Native American life among the tribe of the Oglala Lakota and their culture. Even today, the book is still considered to be one of the first works of Native American literature. (As a matter of fact, the book is listed in the chapter ¿Indianerliteratur¿ (Native American Literature) in Hubert Zapf¿s ¿Amerikanische Literaturgeschichte¿.) Even though it was written down and published by a person of Euro-American background, the story itself is considered to be uniquely Native American in content. But how authentic is the story, how much of what Neihardt wrote down was fact, and what was actually his own interpretation or even literary freedom that he took to serve certain stereotypes and make the story more appealing for the audience which it was aimed at BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 24 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - History of Literature, Eras, grade: 1,7, RWTH Aachen University, language: English, abstract: Modernist writers like Ezra Pound or James Joyce often wrote in fragmented style, used allusions instead of metaphors and broke with traditional verse and turned away from classical poetry. In many cases they did not use classical metaphors but rather wrote in allusions, which refer to something in a more indirect way than traditional images do. With their literature and style they tried to criticize modern society. Among these authors, T.S. Eliot is one of the most important modernist writers. ¿The Waste Land has come to be regarded as one of the chief exemplars of modernism in English literature.¿ (Reeves 1994: 3) According to this Eliot¿s poem can be seen as a typical example of modern poetry. In his long poem The Waste Land the author refers to a number of mythological images and stories. These are presented in fragments but make sense and seem to be well structured when one analyzes them deeper after several close readings and analyses. One of the most important personages in his poem is the blind seer Tireseas. In his Notes to The Waste Land, T.S. Eliot points out that ¿[w]hat Tireseas sees, in fact, is the substance of the poem¿ (1971: p. 148). This substance of the poem, which was first published in 1922, is to be analyzed in this term paper. Tireseas, a blind seer, who appears in ancient Greek literature in the Theban Plays by Sophocles and in Roman literature in the Metamorphosis by Ovid, is used as a reflex of the author¿s voice foreseeing human failures without being able to change them. In Greek mythology, especially in Sophocles¿ Antigone, he appears as a reminder of traditions.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 20 pp. Englisch.

In the first part of this paper, I will begin with introducing the phenomenon. Here, I will give a short overview of how reflexive pronouns developed. Furthermore, I will present two different acknowledged theories (Chomsky and Reinhart & Reuland) and their conditions on reflexive pronouns. I will then show the two different usages of this phenomenon and will give examples of cases which are somewhat different from the common way of using it. In the second part, I will present the explanations and rules as they are given in the three most commonly used schoolbooks here in Hesse to show how reflexive pronouns are implemented. In part three, I will investigate in how far these rules are sufficient to explain the examples given in those schoolbooks respectively. I will furthermore analyze examples given in Mary Shelley¿s ¿Frankenstein¿ and Oscar Wilde¿s ¿The Canterville Ghost¿, which are suggested for the use in seventh grade. Here, I will rather put my focus on somewhat more complex examples in order to find out whether those short rules apply for them as well. I will then conclude, whether my assumption that the explanations in these schoolbooks are not sufficient can be verified.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 24 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Essay from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,7, Free University of Berlin (Institut für Englische Philologie), course: History and Variation of English II, language: English, abstract: The question about the grammaticalization process of the modal auxiliary verbs from Old English to Modern English is a highly discussed topic among linguistics and scholars today. It is undisputed that, in the English that is spoken today, words like 'should', 'could' etc. form a separate category, or rather a subcategory, 'modal' that does not only syntactically differ from the usual English verbs, but also morphologically. That is, of course with the exception of a few regional variations such as for example Scots, but since the main focus of this paper is on the standard British and American English dialects, those regional non-standard dialects will not be taken into consideration here. For every native and average non-native speaker, it is natural that modals like 'will' for example don't take the obligatory inflectional ending -s in third person singular present. Or that 'should', 'would' or 'could' do not have past tense meaning, although the forms itself are actually a past form. And it is also natural that just those verbs, which we subcategorize as modals, will neither appear as infinitives with 'to' (\*'I have to will'), nor do they require 'to' in combination with regular verbs (\*'I should to go'). Today we instinctively know that those usual grammatical rules that regular verbs require to be followed in order to correctly be embedded in a sentence, don't apply to the modals. How did we get to this point, though In the following paper I want to take a closer look at how the modals developed from regularly inflectional verbs, that they still were in Old English, to this new category 'modal' which is no longer a full verb that can stand alone in a sentence, but more of a grammatical function that signals either epistemic or deontic meaning.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 20 pp. Englisch.

Kennedy-Institut für Nordamerikastudien), course: Language Change II: Language Contact Phenomena and Change in English, language: English, abstract: The number of indigenous people that inhabited the American continent before the European settlers arrived is still debated about today. Based on numerous different sources, printed as well as online, it ranges from 8 million to 112 million people who lived in tribal societies. Those tribes were often very different in the way they lived: some societies were nomad tribes, their major source of food being hunting ¿ which was why they followed their prey. Others lived from growing maize and plants. Again others in the rocky desert regions lived in houses which they built using the natural rock foundations of the area. There were different sizes of tribes, some being rather small, and some being huge, like for example the Aztec societies or the Anasazi people. But no matter what size the population of tribe was, or how advanced they were in their way of life, there¿s one thing all of them had in common: the moment of contact with the European settlers changed their lives forever.Today the number of Native American people in the United States, although slowly increasing again, is still considerably low: about 1.9 million people today consider themselves to be Native Americans. They make about one percent of the overall population of the United States of America. Throughout the last five centuries, their population was decimated by diseases and wars, caused by the invasions of European settlers. Special programs during the nineteenth century, aiming to ¿kill the Indian, save the man¿ have further added to not only the decimation of a race, but the loss of cultures and related to that, languages.Yet, a lot of aspects of Native American cultures and languages live on today in the modern languages in the form of loanwords. These loanwords allow a glimpse into a unique style of life, which got lost over time. This paper aims on looking at the different kinds of loanwords, seeing what areas of life they can be classified into and to examine when they entered the English language for the first time.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 24 pp. Englisch.

Intertextuality is a major technique in the novel and especially the mythical stories are explicitly interwoven with hints to the Bible. The author deals with canonical texts as well as with Indian myths and, as we¿re going to see later, also with historical events etc. He takes up names and parts of the pre-text and re-writes them. ¿It is essential to note, however, that these pre-texts are not opposed to each other as part of a binary structure. Rather they interact with one another and form something new each time they are told¿1.Besides the many direct and indirect references, there are also several correspondences between the structure of Green Grass, Running Water and the Bible, e.g. the four stories told by the four old Indians can be seen as a parallel to the four gospels in the New Testament2. In the following I am going to focus on explicit references in the four mythical stories that develop in the conversation of the trickster Coyote and a first person narrator. The main part of this analysis is the comparison between the biblical pre-texts and King¿s re-writing. As the actual parallels are very few there has to be some other idea behind these intertextual devices. It is probably more about history and hierarchy than about the pure pre-text.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 20 pp. Englisch.
