Alan Cooper has been an avid aviation historian and writer for some years. Alan W. Cooper joined and served in everything from the cubs to the Army cadets until when aged 17 he enlisted in the Territorial Army (2nd Monmouthshire Regiment) as a boy bandsman and served with them until 1958 when he was called for National Service with the South Wales Borderers (They of Rourke's Drift fame) but having already decided to become a regular soldier he enlisted in the 4/7th Royal Dragoon Guards band and subsequently learned to march wearing spurs. 617 Squadron carried some of the most outstanding exploits of the air war out, after they had executed their famous Dam's Raid in May 1943. These included special low-flying attacks on canals, factories, rocket sites, viaducts, and, of course, the attack on the German battleship Tirpitz. The standard set to serve in 617 Squadron is shown in the success of such operations. They were led firstly by Wing Commander Bruce Gibson, who set this standard, followed by Squadron Leader Mick Martin, and the incomparable Wing Commander Leonard Cheshire, who developed the accuracy of marking and bombing to a very high degree. He in turn was succeeded by Wing Commander Willie Tait who led all three attacks on the Tirpitz, and from then on was known as 'Tirpitz' Tait. All the leaders of the Squadron were outstanding airmen, each having more than a hundred operations to his credit. This book is a timely reminder that there was a lot more to the Squadron's history than their exploits on the Dams. First Goodall Paperback Edition [Stated]. Presumed first printing.

No date, circa 1880s-1910s. 4 1/2" x 3." "Goodall Trademark" printed on back with Charles Goodall & Son's signature emblem of a heart, spade, clover, and diamond. Trade card is very clean and intact except for slight discoloration at the edges and a few small wrinkles. A Near Fine copy. Trade card for an unidentified company. The trademark on back belongs to Charles Goodall & Son, a manufacturer of playing cards that was based in London. Charles Goodall (1785-1851) founded his company in 1820. His two sons later joined the business. Charles Goodall & Son enjoyed much success and produced about 2/3 of all English playing cards by the mid-1800s. Over the years, the firm also introduced new products such as stationery and games. The company is also notable for popularizing the court card faces on playing cards as they are known today. Charles Goodall & Son had many more decades of success, but the economic hardships brought about by World War I and the lack of successors resulted in the company being sold to its competitor, De La Rue, in 1922. The Goodall brand name continued to be used years after the acquisition. Trade cards are antique business cards that first became popular during the late seventeenth century in Paris and Lyon, France and London, England. Trade cards were often given by business owners and proprietors to patrons and customers as a way to promote their businesses. Prior to the use of street addresses, trade cards had maps so clients could locate the associated business. Many of these cards also incorporated elaborate designs, illustrations, and other decorative features. Trade cards became popular in the United States during the nineteenth century in the period after the Civil War. The late nineteenth century also saw the advent of trade card collecting as a hobby. While they are no longer in use, trade cards influenced the formation of trading cards and were the predecessors of modern-day business cards.

Añadir al carritoOctavo, hardcover (slick, full-color illus. boards), 140pp + [iv] pp. Neat bookplate; otherwise, Fine. From lower cover: The Augsburg Raid was one of R.A.F. Bomber Command's most daring attacks of World War II. Twelve Lancasters, six from No. 44 (Rhodesia) Squadron based at Waddington and six from No. 97 (Straits Settlements) Squadron, based at Woodhall Spa, were ordered to carry out a low-level raid on the M.A.N. diesel engine factory at Augsburg in Southern Bavaria. This round trip of 1,000 miles took place on 17th April 1942, a long and arduous flight hedge-hopping over enemy territory at 50 ft. Four Lancasters were shot down en route, three were lost over the target and only five returned safely to base. No fewer than 37 aircrew were lost, 12 became P.O.W.'s and 36 got back. S/Ldr. J.D. Nettleton, D.F.C., who led one of the sections, was awarded the Victoria Cross. This is the definitive work on the raid. The author, S/Lrd. Jack Currie, DFC, himself a former Bomber Command Lancaster pilot. reveals important new information and examines the enigmas which continue to obscure the facts about this spectacular and extraordinary operation. Why, for example, did the bombers strike in daylight when the plan was for a dusk attack? Why did Nettleton's formation fly over an enemy fighter base en route? Why did the 97 Squadron formation leader fail to receive theVC that theC-in-C had recommended? Why were the massive diversionary missions so ineffective? Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: very good condition. A sensitively-written true story by a RAF Bomber Command wartime R/T operator who talked down the crews on their return from operations, met them off duty and so offen mourned their loss within days. The book sparkies with humour and anecdote yet has a very special poignancy. The author reiterates her 'deep admiration for the men of Bomber Command who carried the fight to the enemy when no one else could. They were, and are, truly remarkable men! THE WAAF The Women's Auxiliary Air Force was formed on 28th June 1939 and by July 1943, from a strength of less than 2,000 when war began, reached its peak strength of over 180,000 officers and airwomen. By 1945 the WAAF were working with men in 59 airmen's trades in addition to 17 ancilliary trades established solely for the WAAF. The first women officers went overseas in 1940 and between then and the end of the war served in North Africa, Tunis, Italy, Greece and Holland. The first draft of airwomen sailed for the Mediterranean in May 1944 and they also served in the Far East, France and Germany. The work done by the WAAF during the war was recognised by the granting of a number of honours and awards and thousands were mentioned in dispatches. 186 were killed on active Service. On Ist February 1949 the WAAF became the Women's Royal Air Force. 171 p.
