Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - This paper investigates the relation between women and men's life stages and their time allocation: paid work, household work, childcare and leisure time, and, in particular, how this allocation changes when moving from one stage to another stage. We use a new Danish panel dataset merged with Danish administrative register data, which allows for analysing the impact of individual, endogenous characteristics of the respondents such as preferences for doing specific activities. We find that the labour supply of fathers to pre-school children is not different from that of young men without children, while there is a negative correlation between mothers to pre-school children and young women's labour supply. Comparing fathers and mothers to school children with those to pre-school children, we find a positive correlation in both sexes labour supply. However, fixed effects estimations do not result in a reduction in mothers, nor in fathers, to pre-school children's labour supply indicating that there are some inborn characteristics for the other life-stage changes which are not revealed by doing ordinary cross-sectional analyses.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Hannah McGlade's book bravely addresses the complex and fraught issue of Aboriginal child abuse. She argues that Aboriginal child sexual assault has been formed within the entrenched societal forces of racism, colonisation and patriarchy, yet cast in the Australian public domain as an Aboriginal 'problem', with controversial government responses critiqued as racist and paternalistic. McGlade highlights that non-Aboriginal society has yet to acknowledge the traumatic impacts of the sexual assault on Aboriginal children which was part and parcel of the European project of 'civilisation'. She provides detailed analysis of the legal systems response. While child sexual assault is a criminal offence, the Aboriginal experience of the law is tainted. Despite reforms to the law, the courtroom experience is based on re-victimisation and trauma which prevents the fundamental principle of equality before the law. McGlade believes that we should be guided by Indigenous human rights concepts and international Indigenous responses in addressing the problem. In doing so she believes that we can help to stem the harm to future generations.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Two contrasting images typically represent 'the poor' in development studies and practice. On the one hand, they are portrayed as those who do not have: deprivation is the quintessence of their identity, the definition of their being. The very notion of 'poor' dooms the bearer to a subordinate, powerless status. Alternatively, they are idealistically depicted as thriving in solidarity, rich traditions and true authentic experience uncontaminated by capitalist ways of life and harmoniously linked to nature. An analysis of poverty requires stepping back from these stereotypical notions of the poor and examining the ways in which those identified as destitute deploy resources and act in pursuing their livelihoods. Taking cases from Zimbabwe, Mozambique, India, Bangladesh, Peru and Mexico and spanning diverse spheres of interaction: between donors and beneficiaries, local authorities and citizens, employers and employees, as well as between different social and ethnic groups the contributions in this volume focus on people's struggles to alleviate their poverty or to deal with situations of hardship and privation. They challenge traditional approaches within studies on poverty and developing countries by addressing the ways in which resources including land, labour, credit and aid, water and cash, but also knowledge, skills, organisation and moral entitlements are accessed, deployed and negotiated. Whether successful or not, individual and collective efforts to juggle adversity help us understand the mechanisms by which poverty is reproduced, but also contested.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Eliot's dictum about the objective correlative has often been quoted but rarely analysed. This book traces the maxim to some of its sources and places it in a contemporary context. Eliot agreed with Locke about the necessity of sensory input, but for a poet to be able to create poetry, the input has to be processed by the poet's intellect. Respect for control of feelings and order of presentation were central to Eliot's conception of literary criticism. The result the objective correlative is not one word, but 'a scene' or 'a chain of events'. Eliot's thinking was also inspired by late 19th century French critics like Gautier and Gourmont, whose terminology he not infrequently borrowed. But he chose the term 'objective' out of respect for the prestige that still surrounded the Positivist paradigm. In its break-away from Positivist dogmas, criticism of art in the early 20th century was very much preoccupied with form. In poetry, that meant focus on the use and function of the word. That focus is perceptible everywhere in Eliot's criticism. Even though the idea of the objective correlative was not an original one, Eliot's treatment of it is interesting because he sees a seeming truism ('the right word in the right place') in a new light. He never developed the theory, but the thought is traceable in several of his critical essays. On account of its categorical and rudimentary form, the theory is not unproblematic: whose fault is it if the reader's response does not square with the poet's intention And indeed, Eliot's own practice belies his theory -- witness the multifarious legitimate interpretations of his poems.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - This book sets out to examine the policy of the British Foreign Office towards Yugoslavia and the Tito Government during this important period. Pivotal to this policy was the relationship between Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union, and its effects on Soviet-Western relations in general. Foreign Office policy towards Yugoslavia is also explored in the context of Anglo-Yugoslav relations, and the degree to which Britain's need for American financial support, as well as American commitment to the reconstruction of Western Europe, limited Britain's freedom of action.…
