Añadir al carritoSee his entry in the Oxford DNB. The four items in good condition, lightly aged and worn, and all folded for postage. The last item with pin hole to one corner. The first three addressed to 'Dear Sir' and the last to 'Dear Fisher'. All four signed 'A C Lyall', both with and without periods after the initials. ONE (9 October 1888…): 3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. He acknowledges the 'list of lectures', which 'contains already several subjects connected with Indian religion, so that I am inclined to doubt whether any additional contribution that I could make will not be superflous.' Nevertheless, he asks questions about his 'rights over his paper, after it has been read', and 'the actual length of time which the lecture is expected to take up in delivery'. TWO (17 December 1888): 3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. The 'proof of the Lecture List seems correct', and he suggests sending a dozen copies to his 'standing address' at Queen's Gate. He will 'defer replying definitively' with regard to the 'proposal that my manuscript shall be published in a volume'. He has been preparing the lecture, 'in rough notes, under the impression that the full manuscript, when filled out, would be at my own disposal for future use'. THREE (17 November 1895): 2pp, 12mo. The date that he suggests will suit Lyall 'very well for my lecture - so far as it is possible to engage ones' [sic] self for three months hence'. He has 'no experience of illustrations by the magic lantern', and does not know 'whether they would be procurable for a lecture on North India'. FOUR (23 April 1907): 2pp, 12mo. Bifolium. Begins: 'Dear Fisher, / It would be useless, I fear, to agree that you should give my name as a reference in connexion with your candidature for a Professorship of Commerical Law.' He explains why this is so, before stating: 'In regard to the offices you have held in India, no attestation from me is required, they can be verified from the Record of Service in the India List, and from other documents. / So I am obiged, with regret, to reply that I cannot comply with your request.'.

Añadir al carrito1p, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded twice. The recipient is not named, but the item derives from the papers of James Payn, the editor of the Cornhill Magazine, London. Gallenga begins: 'My dear Sir. | The last time I saw you - it may be 20 years ago - you were leaving London to write for Chambers in Edinburgh. I se…e the Journal now and then, and I often fancy I detected you.' He is 'almost sure' that Payn wrote 'the article quoting Miss Mitford's letters' and challenges him: 'If I am right, say so.' He continues: 'And if you ever are in London, let me see you, here at the Athenaeum, at my house, or wherever you like. We need all of us, at times, to see old friends. Since I saw you I have got on well in the world.' In 1854, through Cavour's influence, Gallenga had been elected a deputy to the Italian parliament, retaining his seat until 1864. He passed the summer in England and fulfilled his parliamentary duties at Turin in the winter. His employment as a Times correspondent begain during the Austro-Sardinian War of 1859, and continued for twenty years. In 1876, along with Edwin Pears, he was the first to reveal to the British public the Turkish atrocities in Bulgaria.

Añadir al carritoTo Canon [Basil] Wilberforce. In an October 1899 letter to W.D. Howells, Clemens noted that he had just received an invitation from Wilberforce to "talk Joan of Arc in his drawing-room to the Dukes and Earls and M. P.'s.," and indicated that he would endeavor to postpone the occasion. He appears to have succeeded in doing so, fo…r here, six months later, he discusses the nature of the proposed talk: "The short paper which I wrote for Mr. Murray's book [T. Douglas Murray, Jeanne d'Arc, Maid of Orleans (1903)] contains what I should wish to say -- a grouping, under two or three heads, of the chief marvels of Joan's character as revealed by the prominent incidents of her career. It is not an effort to account for Joan, but rather an argument or confession that she cannot be accounted for. A large part of the interest which she has for me, grows out of just that perplexing & fascinating mystery: that our capablest rules of measurement are baffled & defeated in her case -- we can't get at her astronomical dimensions with our yard-stick. If I might read from that paper & intersperse the reading with talk enough to relieve the formality & stiffness of the deliberately-prepared sentences, I think I might get through without ship-wreck." Signed: "Very sincerely yours S.L. Clemens." Wilberforce & Clemens are enshrined in the body of literary anecdote via the incident in July of 1899 when Wilberforce confused Clemens' hat for his own and made off with it. An appealing letter from Twain's stint across the Atlantic, with an appropriately European subject. A few minor finger smudges, folded for mailing (with careful repair to break at one fold) otherwise very good or better.
