Paperback. Condición: Very Good. This book contains almost 200 photos taken from the late nineteenth century to the 1960s by the General Electric Company. Over these decades GE scientists continually experimented to invent and modify street lights that could transform urban downtowns, rural roads, and parks into daylight use. The images in this book show more than half of America lighting up for the first time liberating the country from common darkness and allowing entertainment, work, and pleasure to become a 24 hour pursuit. …

Paperback. Condición: Good. This family saga of westward migration is told through the voices of people who lived 100 years ago by means of letters, diaries, oral history and photographs. It includes a memoir of the author's improbable discoveries as he found the stories of the grandfather he never knew. The Lawtons' first ancestor arrived in Massachusetts in 1635. Its succeeding generations followed forest cutting to the west, across the northern states, until one branch of the family arrived in frontier Spokane in 1890. Will and Irene Lawton followed a string of settlers from Wisconsin, where the pine forests were playing out after a quarter century of logging. They established homes and businesses in Spokane, then left in 1906 and settled a few miles west in the scablands of the Columbia Plateau, where they bought land, took up a homestead, and commenced farming and storekeeping. The dream worked until misfortune and flawed assumptions eventually led to the loss of all they had built. The family had been multi-generational and closely knit. But by 1920 the family had scattered because of untimely deaths and the collapse of homesteading. As a fatherless boy, Walter Lawton, Will's son, spent years in Idaho's mountains herding sheep to get by.…

Paperback. Condición: Fair. Prince Alfred, who was created Duke of Edinburgh in 1866 and became Duke of Saxe-Coburg Gotha in 1893, was the second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. A patron of the arts, pioneer philatelist and amateur violinist, he joined the Royal Navy as a boy and rose to become Admiral of the Fleet. At the age of 18 he was elected King of Greece by overwhelming popular vote in a plebiscite, although political agreements between the Great Powers of Europe prevented him from accepting the vacant crown. The most widely travelled member of his family, he had visited all five continents by the age of 27, and while on a tour of Australia in 1868 he narrowly escaped assassination at the hands of a Fenian sympathiser. Married to Grand Duchess Marie of Russia, the only surviving daughter of Tsar Alexander II, at one stage he had to face the possibility that he might be required to fight on behalf of the British empire against that of his father-in-law. His last years were overshadowed by marital difficulties, alcoholism and ill-health, and the suicide of his only son and heir.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. In Brainwashed and Anointed, Christopher Yeoman tells his heart-wrenching struggles within Mormonism with no holds barred honesty and irresistible wit. Raised as a Mormon boy in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Christopher went through a heavily indoctrinated youth system, and at the age of 19 he served as a missionary for the Church. So sure of his religion and of the existence of God, he thought nothing would ever break his faith, but after battling with shame and guilt for his so-called 'sins', an ordeal with panic attacks and loss, his belief system began to unravel. This story offers a fascinating insight into the conflict between years of conditioned thinking vs. a need to reprogram one's mind after escaping the clutches of organized religion. Packed with humorous anecdotes and heartbreaking confessions, Brainwashed and Anointed makes for a fascinating read for anyone who is has been affected by religion or not.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. The Christmas Tree Shops, founded in 1970, became a beloved New England icon for unique bargains. The Christmas Tree Shops was an icon of New England, with stores that offered a diverse assortment of merchandise from seasonal decorations, home decor, housewares, food and giftware, and just about everything else. Founded in 1970 by Chuck and Doreen Bilezikian, they opened their first shop on Route 6A at Willow Street in Yarmouth Port in a former grocery store. Over the next three decades, twenty-three stores were opened that not only had distinctive architecture but also became a destination for the public and offered items you never thought you needed before stepping through the door.Despite the seasonal name, the Bilezikians sold unique, one-of-a-kind quality merchandise at bargain prices from closeouts and overruns, as well as small batches of baskets made in Eastern Europe, glass Christmas ornaments from Poland, and a plethora of intriguing merchandise. One customer described the stores as "like walking into a closet full of surprise treasures" and combined with great prices, they would coin their familiar catch phrase "Don't You Just Love a Bargain?" Employees radiated a warm, positive attitude and were valued for their part in making the Christmas Tree Shops not just a special place to shop but a great success. As Chuck and Doreen Bilezikian once said, "Together we grew a successful company and created many memories." Indeed, there are many who fondly recall the thrill of finding a bargain at these iconic stores.…
