Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. In this challenging but fair account of the Irish Civil War, Colum Kenny sets out relevant tragic events of 1922 to 1923 in a clear and succinct way. He highlights in graphic detail the main moments of a war between former friends. Arguing that it is not possible to suspend judgment about a…dispute that threatened the democratic foundation of the Irish state, and that gave solace to its enemies, he presents a balanced analysis of what happened during those two turbulent years.Referring to activists on both sides such as Michael Collins, Harry Boland, Mary McSwiney and Richard Mulcahy, the author explains that the Civil War was bubbling from early 1922. Reflecting on the lasting bitterness engendered by civil war, a bitterness that broke Arthur Griffith's heart and contributed to his early death in 1922, Kenny relates the Civil War to current tensions surrounding the future of Northern Ireland. In this challenging but fair account of the Irish Civil War, Colum Kenny sets out relevant tragic events of 1922 to 1923 in a clear and succinct way. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Burncourt is a rural area in Co. Tipperary. The name derives from the burning of the Everard Mansion in 1650. This was done by Cromwell or, as local lore has it, by Lady Catherine Everard, who did not want the castle to fall into Cromwellian hands. The castle was never reoccupied and now lie…s as an imposing ruin on the landscape. Burncourt is an area where history abounds. Yet we can never know the full story of a place; all that can be provided are glimpses into the past. In this work, author Rose M. Cleary allows us to look at how the area developed and evolved, and how it was shaped by its rich history. This is Burncourt. An expertly researched local history of Burncourt, Tipperary, focussing on the history and archaeology of this historic region. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. 'Can you say whether your bank has an account in the name of a man called Michael Collins?' - Alan Bell, official bank inquiry. In 1919, the revolutionary Irish government launches an audacious plan to crowdfund the equivalent of 30,000,000 to fund a counter-state in open defiance of British…rule in Ireland. Half the funds are to be raised in Ireland and half in America. This start-up government is determined not only to replace the British administration in Ireland but also to implement its own industrial and financial policies, including establishing a national bank. But the funding campaign in America is delayed owing to regulatory obstacles. It is imperative that the domestic funding campaign succeeds. Without funds, the counter-state government is doomed to failure. A financial 'Ho Chi Minh Trail' is established; couriers secretly begin distributing three million promotional leaflets throughout the country and carrying subscriptions to Dublin; Head Office staff ensure that receipts are issued, loan registers updated and coded financial accounts maintained. The money is laundered into bank accounts and converted into gold using a 'gold exchange network'.An uncompromising former detective, now a near-retired magistrate, is summoned to Dublin to go after the money. This is the untold history of the fight for the revolutionary government's funds, the bank inquiry that shook the financial establishment and the first battle in the intelligence war. In 1919 the revolutionary Irish government launched an audacious plan to crowdfund the equivalent of EURO30m to fund a counter-state in open defiance to British rule. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Bryan MacMahon gives a comprehensive overview of the origins and progress of the Protestant evangelical campaign in West Kerry from 1825 to 1845. These Church of Ireland missionaries were motivated by a desire to save Irish-speaking Catholics from what they saw as superstitious practices and… enthrallment to Rome. This study brings personalities to life and records the long-lost voices and values of those on both sides of the religious divide. The work of the evangelicals was widely hailed as a model of a successful missionary campaign; however, it evoked a furious response from Catholic priests. The war of words between clergymen of both persuasions was fomented by rival local newspapers, reaching a climax in a notorious libel case in March 1845. This work is a comprehensive overview of the Protestant evangelical campaign in West Kerry from 1825-45, and the Church of Ireland missionaries who were motivated by a desire to save Irish-speaking Catholics from their 'superstitious practices and enthralment to Rome'. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Authoritarian nationalism is on the rise in Europe and elsewhere. Freedom is endangered in Eastern Europe. In the Middle East, militant Islam threatens peace, stability, and liberty. The US has recently faced an existential crisis, with the rise of populism and the unprecedented polarization… of Left and Right. Brexit has endangered the integrity of the EU, which has hitherto operated as a defender of peace and freedom. At the same time, threats have arisen in the West to the traditional value of free speech. With the fall of the Soviet Union decades ago, liberal capitalism seemed to be consolidating on the global stage. Since then, the West has been beset by social fragmentation, by the growing consciousness of environmental perils - such as global warming and the threat to biodiversity - and by ongoing racial turmoil. With the creeping influence of the corporate state, cyber-technology threatens to put our souls up for sale to the highest bidder. Threats to freedom and privacy have become a matter of great concern. In recent times, the pandemic has involved extraordinary restrictions on freedom on a global scale. The recent imposition of emergency legislation serves to emphasize the fragility of the liberties we normally take for granted.Drawing widely on relevant literature, including political theory from Plato to Hannah Arendt, this book highlights the above and related issues. In practical terms, it suggests some ways in which the tendency to undermine freedom might be countered, through a political re-assertion of the value of liberty. Authoritarian nationalism is on the rise in Europe; freedom is endangered in Eastern Europe; the Middle East faces political, religious and sectarian threats to peace; the US has seen an unprecedented polarization of Left and Right. This work looks at this issues through the works of the great political philosophers of our time. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Covid-19 changed how we see ourselves in the world. The pandemic brought loss and uncertainty, but also resilience and coping. People found ways to persevere, survive, and grow. What does the single most traumatic event of our generation mean? Can we learn its lessons? Do societies ever lear…n lessons? There was collective amnesia about the 1918 Spanish flu. Will we forget Covid-19? This book reflects on the pandemic in Ireland, what we might learn as a society, and what pandemics teach us about ourselves. The history of similar events is explored through the work of Sir William Wilde, Victorian doctor and father of playwright Oscar. Wilde knew the impact of infection through his clinical work, his studies of plagues in Irish history, and the tragic meningitis of his beloved daughter, Isola - the same condition from which Oscar later died. Infection is eternal, but each pandemic is new to each generation. This book explores how Covid-19 showed that we are more fragile than we thought, but also stronger, smarter, wiser, and kinder. Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. The first operation under anesthesia in Ireland took place 175 years ago when John MacDonnell, a surgeon at the Richmond Hospital, Dublin amputated the arm of Mary Kane on January 1st 1847. This occurred less than three months after the first public demonstration of the use of ether for pain…less surgery in Boston. Over the next 150 years, anesthesia was to evolve from an apprentice-based craft to become a highly technical specialty, integral not just in the operating theater but also to a wide range of other medical settings. The book, in the first published history of the specialty in Ireland, describes the personalities, institutions and innovators who led the development of anesthesia in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, from 1847 to the foundation of the College of Anaesthetists of Ireland in 1998. Soft cover. Condición: As New. First Edition. pp x, 115. 'Henry O'Neill is best known as an artist, archaeologist, publisher and polemicist, as seen through his various books - "The sculptured crosses of ancient Ireland", Ireland for the Irish", and "The round towers of Ireland" (County Dublin only). But they give a mere inkling… of the impressive compendium of work that O'Neill did throughout a long and active career spanning 40 years and more. We find out a lot more through the sketch-books of his that survive, and realise what an incredible amount of travelling and sketching he did through his interest in castles or tower-houses, though he also covered a wide variety of other monuments, from prehistoric times almost up to his own day. O'Neill has, however, been largely airbrushed out of Ireland's antiquarian story because he came off second best to his great adversary George Petrie in the controversy about Irish round towers which raged throughout much of the nineteenth century. O'Neill was convinced that they were of pagan origin, whereas Petric argued correctly in favour of their Christian associations. Nevertheless . [he must] be ranked very highly among Irish antiquarian artists of the late Georgian and victorian periods.'.
