Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Very Good. This beautifully illustrated volume takes a fresh look at some of the most enduring landscapes painted by Claude Monet between 1883 and 1926 in and around his garden at Giverny, some 50 miles northwest of Paris. His depiction of sites in the surrounding countryside and of iconic garden motifs such as the Japanese footbridge, water lilies, and wisterias are characterised by subtle colouring and expressive brushwork, making these paintings among the most innovative of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, as well as some of the most beloved masterpieces of French art. Unlike many recent books on Giverny that have tended to focus on planting and garden design, 'Monet in Giverny: Landscapes of Reflection' looks at the theme of reflection in all its forms, focusing on the garden as a continuing source of inspiration for Monet, as well as a reflection of his own theories on art. Featuring 12 seminal paintings from major collections, this volume also examines Monet's paintings at Giverny in the context of contemporary developments in art and photography. A first-hand account of the garden, written in 1891 by French author and critic Octave Mirbeau, has been translated for the first time for this volume by Benedict Leca, and is illustrated with 15 historic photos of the artist and his garden. Published to accompany an exhibition at the Cincinnati Art Museum, February 4 - May 13, 2012. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. This publication features the work of French artist Eugène Louis Charvot (1847-1924), a distinguished painter and printmaker. Recognized in his time, Charvot's work was lost to history and has been rediscovered in Jacksonville Florida. A fascinating individual, Charvot practiced medicine for many years but stated that his first love was art. Thus, despite the rigors of a prestigious medical career, Charvot devoted himself to the pursuit of his muse throughout his life. Inspired by the serene countryside of his youth, Charvot became a landscapist, and made his debut in 1876 at the annual Salon in Paris. Spending his medical career in the French military, Charvot was posted in colonial Tunisia (1885-89) and Algeria (1892-96), where he documented the life around him and sent oils back to Paris for entry in the SalonsAfter Charvot's death in 1924, his work fell into obscurity. His family preserved his award-winning etchings, his landscapes and Orientalist paintings as well as his unpublished diary, family letters and sketchbooks. Charvot's daughter, Yvonne Charvot Barnett, brought the majority of his work to Jacksonville, Florida where the discovery of these extensive holdings has led to a reevaluation of Charvot's work and a resurrection of the reputation of this accomplished artist. The works now reside in the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens, as the Charvot Collection. Through an in-depth review of his career as an artist, this new volume highlights Charvot's breadth of processes, productivity and inspiration in painting, etching and drawing. With a focus on family portraits, pastoral country scenes, nocturnes and North African genre and street scenes, the book weaves family photographs, journal entries and excerpts from family letters to recreate the world view that informed Charvot's oeuvre.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. An accessible, single-volume, highly visual history that tells the remarkable story of four centuries of Black history in Virginia. Intended for general audiences, this publication presents a concise overview of four centuries of Black history in Virgini - from the arrival of the first enslaved Africans in 1619, through slavery and emancipation, segregation and the Civil Rights Movement, the election of the first Black President and present-day racial justice activism. Across these four centuries, Black Virginians have fought against various forms of oppression and, in the process, have brought about meaningful changes in American society. Their efforts have pushed our nation closer to its ideal of universal equality, yet America still struggles with widespread iniquities and systemic racism rooted in the long legacy of slavery and racial discrimination. Determined presents a chronological survey of this history through the stories of thirty five key individuals and events in Virginia that shaped the fight for Black equity. Although focused on Virginia, this is very much an American story, not only because Black people have shaped America's economic, political, and cultural identity, but also because Virginia has played a formative and central role in national race relations. Determined fills a great need for an accessible, responsible, comprehensive, and current publication about the history of race and racism in the Commonwealth since 1619. This need is particularly urgent given the events of 2020 which have prompted a national reckoning with our long history of systemic racism. Determined will foster a greater understanding of how we got to this moment, while also providing inspiration for how to make change and move our nation ever-closer to its ideal of universal equality. AUTHOR: Dr. Karen Sherry is a curator specialising in American history and material culture with 20 years of museum experience. Since 2017, she has served as a curator at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture (Virginia Historical Society), where she organised the exhibitions Determined: The 400-Year Struggle for Black Equality and Agents of Change: Female Activism in Virginia from Women's Suffrage to Today. Previously, she held curatorial positions at the Portland Museum of Art (Maine, 20122015) and Brooklyn Museum (20052012). Sherry has published, lectured, and organised exhibitions on a range of topics related to American history and culture. She has also received numerous fellowships and grants, including from the National Endowment for the Arts, Luce Foundation, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Smithsonian Institution. She holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in art history from the University of Delaware, and a B.A. from Boston University. 147 colour illustrations Determined explores 400 years of Black history through the stories of key figures and events in Virginia that shaped the fight for Black equity. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Fine. "Hidden Burne-Jones" is a major new volume which throws new light the draughtsmanship of leading Pre-Raphaelite artist, Edward Burne-Jones. The book studies Burne-Jones' development as an artist and image maker through his commitment to drawing during the course of his career. The volume includes three essays by leading Burne-Jones specialists. The first, by John Christian, presents new research on Burne-Jones' drawing technique and stylistic development, most clearly seen in works like the "Fairy Family" series (1857), "The Annunciation" (1857-61), "Study for an Idyll and An Idyll" (1862), and "Drapery Study of Lucretia for Chaucer's 'Legend of Good Women'" (1863).The second essay, by Elisa Korb, studies Burne-Jones' depiction of the female form, his approach to using models, and the stylistic development of subjects such as the nude over the course of his career. The artist's fascination with the female form is most strongly evoked in works like "Female Nude: Three Studies" (1865-66), "Two Nude Female Studies for 'The Lament'", (1865), "Lucretia" (1867) and "Composition Study for 'Charity'" (1867). The final essay, by Tessa Sidey, looks at Burne-Jones' often uneasy relationship with his native city of Birmingham, and the work of major benefactors, especially local patrons J.R. Holliday and Charles Fairfax Murray, in helping to develop the Museum and Art Gallery's internationally important holdings the artist's work. The volume illustrates 63 selected drawings and works on paper, which appear throughout the essays and the main exhibition presentation, nearly 30 of which are reproduced in colour. Each work is accompanied by an entry, which includes full specifications, provenance, inscriptions and an extended caption. The Burne-Jones collection at Birmingham is in every sense an international public resource. It contains nearly 1,200 works, of which over a thousand are works on paper and related archive material. This volume includes a complete catalogue listing of all 1,137 drawings, watercolours, prints and archive material at Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery, which will also form the basis of a new on-line Burne-Jones Resource Site to be launched in 2007.

This volume coincides with the 10th anniversary of the opening of the NMAAHC and celebrations surrounding the signing of the Declaration of Independence 250 years ago. It illustrates how the American flag carries multiple meanings across generations. From soldiers saving Old Glory and veterans' families holding tight a memorial banner, to political activists, sports figures, and everyday Americans waving the Stars and Stripes, African Americans have made the flag their own. While some images celebrate the patriotism and the pride of national identities, others speak to the complex histories of America and the paradox of liberty. The book presents photographs that date from the Civil War to the present day and shows work by celebrated photographers including Anthony Barboza, James Karales, Gordon Parks, Platon, and Maurice Sorrell alongside contemporary images by Sheila Pree Bright, Lola Flash, Zun Lee, Michael McCoy, Rashod Taylor, and others.
