In 1987, how did Syria appear to an American, traveling only with back pack and moving within all layers of Syrian society. This is the story of the volcano before the eruption, the indicators which are being witnessed now are present. From an Al Jadid review of 2002: "We find "insight, humor, and offhand eloquence" on every page of this book. Flashbacks and flash-forwards frequently break into the narrative, often in the words of Syrian friends who comment on the inadequacies of Davis' mind and art. Davis often plays the straight man, and these interludes are sources of wisdom and humor. Indeed, the prose style, generally plain and occasionally stiff (as if in parody of American ingenuousness), gains luminosity and flexibility from ironic self-representation. Text-book historical thumbnails yield to eyewitness reporting of charm and insight. The pace, at times as wavering as the traveler's sense of purpose, gradually picks up as the pattern of interwoven themes becomes clearer. What distinguishes the writing is the author's double awareness of his own simplicity and his capacity for transcending himself to skillfully represent his own spiritual education. If Scott Davis' trip is a kind of descent into the hell of a self-sufficient American self, his book is his Virgil, his true if limited guide. -.

They set up a straw man and argued that, "technically speaking," Jenin was not a "massacre." We may never know how many Palestinians died in Jenin. In the end, however, it is not the number who died that will tell the story. It is the savage cruelty experienced by those who survived Israel's assault that will ultimately define the legacy of that devastated square mile of earth. Their story must be told and remembered. ~Dr. James Zogby, Arab American Institute. "Before, I used to play all kinds of games. I used to play on the swing set and on the slide, and my brothers used to play soccer. But now we only play 'Arabs and Israelis.' It is really hard to find kids who want to be Israelis~even though the Israelis always get to destroy the Arabs' houses. During the invasion, my father told us that he was going to build us a swing set, and a garden, and a special room to do our homework. He used to say, 'You will get the chance to play with all the children in the neighborhood.' Unfortunately, God has chosen my father to be a martyr. We are now on our summer vacation ~although, all of our schools were destroyed by the army anyhow. ~Rund al~Shalabi Fifth grader, Jenin.

Añadir al carritoReprint ed. Paperback octavo, very good condition, maps, black & white drawings & text-photos, minor edgewear. 367 pp. Scott Davis travels alone through Syria (in 1987 and then again in 2001). He documents in depth his travels and the many fascinating people he met along the way: smugglers, mystics, revolutionaries, Bedouins, wise men, secret police, and many ordinary Syrians. The American author wished to see if Syria was the terrorist nation as portrayed in the West, but he found a whole world of experiences among ordinary people as Syria was opening up after the death President Assad in a window when his son Bashir Assad was just starting his reign. (Reveals Syria before the devastating Syrian War.).
