Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Understanding the molecular interactions responsible for chiral recognition is of primary importance in life chemistry. Gas-phase experiments on either neutral or ionic adducts of chiral molecules allow for the study of intrinsic properties of chiral recognition in solvent-free conditions. With contributions from a panel of international experts exploring a variety of subjects, Chiral Recognition in the Gas Phase describes the structural and energetic aspects of these interactions.Optical spectroscopyThe first part of the book focuses on optical spectroscopy in jet-cooled conditions in neutral chiral molecules and complexes. The spectroscopic methods range from microwave, IR, and UV spectroscopy to circular dichroism effects in photoelectron spectroscopy. The book also discusses issues related to the homochirality of life.Mass spectrometryThe second section describes mass spectrometry approaches to chiral recognition in ionic complexes. These approaches encompass the study of the stability of supramolecular chiral host-guest adducts, the study of chiral catalysts and chiral selectors, the use of small DNA sequences as auxiliaries for discriminating the enantiomers of amino-acids, and the probe of the chirality of a single amino acid within a peptide chain.Chiral recognition on a molecular level is essential for the rational design of chiral separation media and for understanding the fundamental interactions between biological molecules. It is especially important in all of the life chemistries, particularly in pharmacology, due to the differences in behavior between the enantiomers of a chiral molecule embedded in a chiral surrounding. This volume cogently and comprehensively describes the state-of-the-art work that has been devoted to understanding of the forces at play in chiral recognition.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - To this point, the field of lubrication has been conceptualized using several noncontiguous modes of operation - boundary, fluid-film, and dry and solid lubrication. Engineers and analysts have long had to deal with old evidence that many tribological devices, such as flat surface and centrally pivoted sliders, can act as viable bearings - contradicting basic hydrodynamic theory. Tribology of Interface Layers introduces a new concept wherein disparate modes are shown to actually be particular phases of a tribological continuum spanning a wide array of material lubricants. The author details these phenomena and presents a novel definition of lubricants as intermediate layers. Explores the phenomenon of continuum spectrum as applied to new powder lubrication technology The book illustrates that contrary to previous understanding, the various lubrication modes - from dry to hydrodynamic to powder lubrication - all overlap each other within a tribological spectral continuum. It also elucidates the fact that bearings, seals, dampers, and similar devices using submicron powder lubricants possess quasi-hydrodynamic characteristics akin to conventional fluid films. Similarly, powder films possess quasi-hydrodynamic features that enable them to act as conventional fluid film bearings. The field of tribology has traditionally been presented in terms of disparate regimes, but this method of classification lacked sufficient rigor. This volume explains that characterization and treatment of any one regime may require the simultaneous accounting of several different modalities that are present in a particular mode of operation. Based on experimental and theoretical work, this text shows how the interdependence of powder and hydrodynamic lubrication exemplifies that perpetuity in tribological processes.Author Hooshang Heshmat was on hand for a book signing at the 2010 STLE Meeting. Dr. Heshmat was the 2007 recipient of the Mayo D. Hersey Award, bestowed on an individual in recognition of distinguished and continuous contributions over a substantial period of time to the advancement of the science and engineering of tribology. Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Nanoporous materials are critical to various fields of research, including ion exchange, separation, catalysis, sensor applications, biological molecular isolation, and purification. In addition, they offer new opportunities in such areas as inclusion chemistry, guest-host synthesis, and molecular manipulations and reactions at the nanoscale. In Structure Property Correlations for Nanoporous Materials, pioneering researcher Abhijit Chatterjee guides experimentalists in their design of nanoporous material using computer simulation methodologies. The book begins with a comprehensive overview of nanoporous materials. It describes their function, examines their fundamental properties, including catalytic effects and adsorption, demonstrates their importance, explores their applications based on theoretical and experimental studies, and highlights the challenges they pose as well as their future prospects. Explores simulation methodologies Next, the book moves on to molecular modeling, placing a heavy focus on Monte Carlo simulation. It examines density functional theory (DFT) and local reactivity descriptors. It also discusses the synthesis of nanoporous materials, the structural characterization of materials in terms of chemical composition, spectroscopic analysis, mechanical stability, and porosity; and the design of new nanoporous materials. Dr. Chatterjee explores projected applications and concludes with a discussion of the catalytic activity of nanoporous materials and reaction mechanisms. The text is supplemented with experiments and simulation instructions to clarify the theoretical analysis. Conveying the significance of the combination of traditional experimental work and molecular simulation, the book enables experimentalists to achieve better results with less effort. …

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Reflecting the substantial increase in popularity of quadrupole ion traps and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometers, Practical Aspects of Trapped Ion Mass Spectrometry, Volume IV: Theory and Instrumentation explores the historical origins of the latest advances in this expanding field. It covers new methods for trapping ions, such as the Orbitrap(TM), the digital ion trap (DIT), the rectilinear ion trap (RIT), and the toroidal ion trap; the development and application of the quadrupole ion trap (QIT) and the quadrupole linear ion trap (LIT); and the introduction of high-field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS).After a combined appreciation and historical survey of mass spectrometry and a discussion of how improved capabilities for microfabrication have led to interest in arrays of ion traps, the book examines the theory and practice of the Orbitrap mass analyzer, the rectangular waveform-driven DIT mass spectrometer, FAIMS, and ion traps with circular geometries. It next discusses ion accumulation for increasing sensitivity in FT-ICR spectrometry, a radio frequency-only-mode event for Penning traps in FT MS, and an FT operating mode applied to a 3D-QIT. The text then presents three behavioral aspects of quadrupole rod sets, before illustrating the development of the 3D-QIT in recent years. The final chapters explore photodissociation in ion traps and the chemical and photochemical studies of metal dication complexes in a 3D-QIT.In this volume that spans twenty-one chapters, a stellar panel of leading experts and up-and-coming researchers presents a cohesive, global, and up-to-date view of the practical aspects of using trapped ion devices. A companion to Volume V: Applications of Ion Trapping Devices, the book authoritatively covers the theory involved as well as the instrumentation currently used in this dynamic field.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Developed by the late metallurgy professor and master experimentalist Hubert I. Aaronson, this collection of lecture notes details the fundamental principles of phase transformations in metals and alloys upon which steel and other metals industries are based. Mechanisms of Diffusional Phase Transformations in Metals and Alloys is devoted to solid-solid phase transformations in which elementary atomic processes are diffusional jumps, and these processes occur in a series of so-called nucleation and growth through interface migration. Instead of relying strictly on a pedagogical approach, it documents the evolution of phase transformation concepts. The authors present topics by describing a phenomenon and then following up with a corresponding hypothesis or alternative explanation. In this way, the book also shows how the field continues to evolve and meet new challenges. Integrated with information from a number of key papers and review articles, this volume reflects this revered and influential instructor's unique and passionate way of introducing well-established theories and knowledge in a systematic way, at the same time introducing, in great detail, how a new idea or interpretation of a phenomenon has emerged, evolved, and gained its current status. If the published version of a theory or a model was too condensed, Aaronson worked the problem out in painstaking detail so that graduate students could follow the derivations. This collection is full of such unique 'Aaronsonian idiosyncrasies,' which add immense value as a powerful tool for learning in this challenging materials field. 686 pp. Englisch.…
