Overall, a NF to borderline fine copy._____DISCUSSION: This is a true livre d'artiste edition generously illustrated with woodcuts by famed French sculptor Aristide Maillol, thought by many to be the equal of their Cranach Press edition of The Tragedie of Hamlet. The bilingual Latin / English edition in the deluxe full morocco binding by W. H. Smith & Sons is scarce and desirable. Of note, the unusual handmade Kessler-Maillol hemp fiber and linen paper is exceptionally prone to foxing. Bound in full red morroco (not signed, with slipcase), endpapers are also vellum. Fourteen title-letters in hand-applied thick-gold (only done for the vellum copie…s). Page 11-12 has a crease on it (does not impact any gilt lettering, see photo). The vellum pages are of very slightly different thicknesses and color. Every page of the book is photographed for review. No tears or chips of course. Actual vellum Cranach Press books are nearly impossible to locate. This is the second that I have handled in 40 years. Book and pages near fine, slipcase with ordinary shelf wear, no splits. A gorgeous book of legendary rarity. The most recent Cranach vellum books to sell at auction were the Rilke, without illustrations, for 42,000e, and the larger Virgil for 80,000e.

Añadir al carritoSingle leaf of Maillol-Kessler laid paper, 10-1/2 x 13-5/8 in., printed in black. Rare proof page for the unrealized Cranach Press edition of Robinson Crusoe illustrated by Craig. This copy has been initialed by Craig in pencil at the lower margin with "EGC copy" and the note "About 10 copies." In another hand at the lower right… corner is "1st proof od the 3rd trial." Craig had long been interested in doing an illustrated edition of Defoe's novel, identifying strongly with the isolated protagonist. He and Harry Kessler agreed that it should be done by Kessler's Cranach Press even as they were at work on their magnificent edition of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Craig's progress on his boxwood engravings was slow. By the time this proof was pulled he had made only six blocks -- two of which were used here -- and Kessler grew increasingly frustrated and with the publication in 1930 of the Limited Editions Club/Grabhorn edition, he saw no need to rush. Progress was further stalled by illness and war and ceased permanently when Kessler died in 1937. Craig continued to labor on his illustrations for many years but never completed the project in his lifetime. His son arranged the publication of the work using his father blocks in 1979. A tiny bit of faint spotting near to upper margin; fine.

Spine gently and evenly sunned to a less reddish brown, traces of white residue from leather preservative to front board, but AN ESPECIALLY FINE COPY, the binding unworn, and IMMACULATE INTERNALLY. A deservedly famous combination of visual daring, printing artistry, and textual scholarship, this is one of the major achievements of private press printing. Undertaken in what Franklin calls "a perfectionist spirit," the book brings together the most glittering names in English and German private printing at the time. In addition to the presence of the woodcuts by Craig, the typographical arrangement of the volume was done by Count Harry Kessler, the title was cut by Eric Gill, the type (in 18-, 12-, and 10-point black letter) was designed by Edward Johnston after that used by Fust and Schoeffer in their Mainz Psalter of 1457, and was cut by Edward Prince (completed after his death by G. T. Friend), and the paper was made by a process devised jointly by Kessler and Aristide and Gaspard Maillol. Franklin says that "anybody who examines the Cranach Press 'Hamlet' must agree it is worthy of its reputation. The paper, superficially like Bachelor's Kelmscott, seems softer and more friendly, appropriate for the expressionist style of Craig's woodcuts. . . . These designs, and Gill's in the Golden Cockerel Chaucer, form the bravest artistic adventure among all private press books." It is increasingly difficult to find well preserved copies of this title, especially in Otto Dorfner bindings. Master binder Dorfner (1885-1955) taught at the School of Applied Arts in Weimar and at the Bauhaus school before founding his own to teach the craft. He was awarded a number of international awards for his bindings, and is particularly noted for his work with the Cranach Press. Dorfner was held in high enough esteem to merit inclusion on the Nazi's"Gottbegnadeten List"("God-gifted list" or "Important Artist Exempt List") of artists essential to Nazi culture. This 36-page list, assembled in September 1944 byJoseph Goebbels andAdolf Hitler, exempted the named artists from mobilization in the final stages of World War II.
