Paperback. Condición: Very Good. A Fool's Errand. By One of the Fools - After the American Civil War, Comfort Servosse, a Yankee gentleman, decides to purchase a Southern Plantation for himself and his family. But unlike other white owners, Servosse is actually interested in the well-being of his black subjects to the extent of calling the K (Ku Klux Klan) a terrorist organisation and blaming Theodore Roosevelt for the failure of Reconstruction of South Soon enough, Servosse finds himself amongst his angry white neighbours and things take a dramatic turn. Bricks Without Straw (A Sequel) - In a chilling sequel to A Fool's Errand, Albion Winegar Tourg e shows how K unleashed their terror on a group of emancipated slaves who want to start their life afresh by buying new land and starting their own businesses. Suddenly out of nowhere, Klan's terrorism begin new wave of slavery and nothing seems to stop them Albion Winegar Tourg e (1838-1905) was an American soldier, Radical Republican, lawyer, writer, politician, and diplomat. A pioneer civil rights activist, he founded the National Citizens' Rights Association, established the historically black women's college Bennett College, and litigated for the plaintiff Homer Plessy in the famous segregation case Plessy v. Ferguson (1896). Historian Mark Elliott credits Tourg e with introducing the metaphor of color-blind justice into legal discourse.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. Frederick Winslow Taylor was an early advocate for applying 'scientific' principles to the management of men, machines, and factories. Few realize, though, the the 'Efficiency Movement' that he helped foment extended well beyond the factory floor. 'Efficiency' clubs sprung up throughout the United States, and the movement found fertile soil elsewhere in the world, as well. These clubs sought to apply Taylor's ideas, referred to as Taylorism, to a variety of human enterprises that one might not expect, such as schools, libraries, and governments. Indeed, 'efficiency' ascended to the level of a new moral virtue. Many modern institutions today are still imbued with the mindset that Taylor advocated. Another fact that is not well known: Taylor's philosophy was incorporated into the worldviews of people who would carry out some of history's worst atrocities. In the United States, the same men who advanced Taylorism advanced eugenics and compulsory sterilization. Germans lauded themselves for their efficiency. In Russia, the Bolsheviks envied the power and principles of organization that Taylorism brought them. Lenin himself was a fan. So it was that Taylorism was promoted both by wealthy industrialists and capitalists and leftist communists, and any and every person who elevated the interests of the 'system' over the individual, per Taylor's succinct moral dictum: In the past the man has been first; in the future the system must be first.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Published here in one volume, the Wallace D. Wattles Trilogy includes The Science of Getting Rich, The Science of Being Well, and The Science of Being Great. These books prescribe an exact method for readers to accomplish three basic goals that will make any person happy, applying principles of metaphysics and New Thought to overcome human error. Each book focuses on a subject--wealth, health, and power--and applies an exact science that will allow anyone to achieve their goal by following some basic steps in a specific order, in a Certain Way. Sacrificing explanations of philosophy for brevity, Wattles provides readers a stripped-down guide on shaping the universe to their benefit through the power of positive thinking. WALLACE DELOIS WATTLES (1860-1911)overcame poverty and failure in his life to become a pioneer of the early self-help movement. His most famous book is The Science of Getting Rich, part of a trilogy that also includes The Science of Being Well, and The Science of Being Great.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. The burden of Europe's private debt to this country is now greater than the burden of her war debt; and the war debt, with arrears of interest, is greater than it was the day the peace was signed. And it is not Europe alone. Debt was the economic terror of the world when the war ended. How to pay it was the colossal problem. -from Cosmology of the Bubble The names of the players are different, but these cautionary essays about massive national debt-written in the long wake of World War I and as the Great Depression was starting to make its horrible power fully known-are still fully applicable today. A powerful libertarian voice of the early 20th century, Garet Garrett, writing originally in the Saturday Evening Post, warned about the extension of American credit to a Europe staggering under a massive debt leftover from the financing of World War I. a situation echoed, if reversed, today as the overextended United States continues her rampant borrowing. Collected in book form, Garrett's writings are a cry for a retreat from financial insanity, a clear-eyed look at a complicated and little understood era of financial history, and perhaps an ominous warning for today. American journalist GARET GARET (1878-1954) also wrote The American Omen (1928), Rise of Empire (1941), and Garet Garrett's: The People's Pottage (later retitled Ex America) (1951).…

Paperback. Condición: Good. This witty, influential work by one of the greatest scholars of the Renaissance satirizes the shortcomings of the upper classes and religious institutions of the time. The most effective of all Erasmus's writings -- ripe with allusions, vignettes, and caricatures -- the literary gem was not only an extremely intelligent and articulate response to pretentiousness of all sorts, it also proved to be spiritual dynamite, leaving monastic brothers and clergymen the objects of universal laughter. The book's purported narrator, the goddess Folly, proclaims herself to be the daughter of Youth and Wealth, nursed by Drunkenness and Ignorance. She is accompanied by such followers as Self-love, Pleasure, Flattery, and Sound Sleep.A clever mix of drollery and fantasy, fast-paced and lighthearted in tone, the work has proved to be a lively and valuable commentary on modern times. It remains, according to the great Dutch historian John Huizinga, a masterpiece of humour and wise irony . something that no one else could have given to the world.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. We are told the wives, daughters, granddaughters, and the sons of Kuchum, named Asmanak, Shaim, Babaja, Kumush, and Mollah, entered the city riding in beautiful sledges, the women dressed in pelisses made of velvet, satin, and cloth of gold, and decorated with gold and silver embroidery and with lace; the Tzarevitches in long red robes, trimmed with rare furs. They were preceded and followed by a number of the feudal soldiery I have called Bayard-followers, dressed in sable pelisses. The streets were filled with crowds of people. --from Kuchum Khan This 1876 work is a comprehensive history of the nomad tribes who dominated Central Asia during the early centuries of the last millennium, and of their great rulers: the khans. Drawing firsthand on numerous scholarly sources and full of illustrative detail and entertaining anecdotes, this remains a vital reference on a civilization now lost to time. The final volume of this three-volume work, covers in detail the fall of the khans to Russia domination in the 15th century, and follows the disappearance of Mongol influence into the 19th century. British ethnologist and historian SIR HENRY HOYLE HOWORTH (1842-1923) served as president of the Royal Archaeological Institute, and is the author of Glacial Nightmare and the Flood (1893) and Methods of Archaeological Research (1896), among other works.…

WHEN IT COMES TO MILITARY FICTION, CONTS REMAINS ON EVERY FAN'S A-LIST.--BOKLISTThe Chinese dragon is flexing its muscles. As its military begins to prey on neighbors in the South China Sea, attacking fishing vessels and scheming to seize natural resources, America goes on high alert. The target: a secret rendezvous of the Atlantic Fleet aircraft carriers and their battle groups. When the CIA director is assassinated and Jake Grafton is appointed to take his place, Jake gets wind of the conspiracy but has no idea when or where the attack will occur. Paperback. Condición: Good. A well-known nineteenth-century abolitionist and former slave, William Wells Brown was a prolific writer and lecturer who captivated audiences with readings of his drama The Escape; or, a Leap for Freedom (1858). The first published play by an African American writer, The Escape explored the complexities of American culture at a time when tensions between North and South were about to explode into the Civil War. This new volume presents the first-edition text of Brown's play and features an extensive introduction that establishes the work's continuing significance. The Escape centers on the attempted sexual violation of a slave and involves many characters of mixed race, through which Brown commented on such themes as moral decay, white racism, and black self-determination. Rich in action and faithful in dialect, it raises issues relating not only to race but also to gender by including concepts of black and white masculinity and the culture of southern white and enslaved women. It portrays a world in which slavery provided a convenient means of distinguishing between the white North and the white South, allowing northerners to express moral sentiments without recognizing or addressing the racial prejudice pervasive among whites in both regions.John Ernest's introductory essay balances the play's historical and literary contexts, including information on Brown and his career, as well as on slavery, abolitionism, and sectional politics. It also discusses the legends and realities of the Underground Railroad, examines the role of antebellum performance art -- including blackface minstrelsy and stage versions of Uncle Tom's Cabin -- in the construction of race and national identity, and provides an introduction to theories of identity as performance.A century and a half after its initial appearance, The Escape remains essential reading for students of African American literature. Ernest's keen analysis of this classic play will enrich readers' appreciation of both the drama itself and the era in which it appeared.…
