It presents research on the different (public and private) systems for municipal waste service delivery in this region. It makes use of existing theories on network governance and on developmental state and multi-level governance and applies the concept of 'modernised mixtures' when studying centralised and decentralised configurations for handling urban solid waste. It is shown that for solid waste management, arrangements for service provision in the urban centres have evolved in direct response to locally specific conditions. It is argued that 'modernised mixtures' are important for improving the performance of local authorities in waste service provision since they offer flexible perspectives which build upon existing practices and (state) capacities in the particular East African contexts.

Not only intense and lasting contacts, but also fleeting interactions contribute to feeling at home.Experience with diversity contributes to a realistic view of multiculturalism, a view that is based on everyday experiences, with all its positive and negative implications. This, however, does not mean that residents do not use stereotypes or categorizations. However, there is a major difference between the public discourse - which focuses on differences and problems - and everyday encounters, which are perceived as a way to experience and enjoy diversity.Recommendations are that politicians should look at the everyday realities in multi-ethnic neighbourhoods when discussing issues related to multi-ethnic societies. Repeatedly stressing the dichotomy between native and non-native Dutch citizens and focusing on problems, has a negative effect on the everyday lives of people because it produces and reproduces stereotyped images. Integration is not only about non-native Dutch residents adapting themselves to Dutch society: it is also about the extent to which people from various backgrounds live together and feel at home in their neighbourhood.

The work complements detailed analysis with an exhaustive review of English, French, and German scholarship on the doctrine. An Appendix on Kant's recently discovered 'Vom inneren Sinne' fragment evinces Kant's continued concern with this doctrine, and a Conclusion intimates the importance of Fichte's and Schelling's identification of the 'aporia of inner sense' to the subsequent development of transcendental idealism.

This is an important book which has been carefully edited with supporting annotations, and has its place in the military history of the period. Controversially, Colonel Tsuji who, according to Louis Allen, was responsible for 'unspeakable atrocities' in Singapore and elsewhere during the Pacific War, was never prosecuted for war crimes.

For the first time in legal literature this book analyses private law initiatives relating to the food chain, often referred to as private… (voluntary) standards or schemes. Private standards are used to remedy flaws in legislation, in order to reach higher levels of consumer protection than the ones chosen by the EU legislature and to manage risks and liability beyond the traditional limits of food businesses. We see that litigation is no longer solely framed by legislative requirements, but ever more by private standards such as GlobalGAP, BRC, IFS, SQF and ISO. These private standards incorporate public law requirements thus embedding them in contractual relations and exporting them beyond the jurisdiction of public legislators. Other standards focus on corporate social responsibility or sustainability. This book also addresses how private religious standards such as Kosher and Halal play a role in defining specific markets of growing importance. It is noted that organic standards have found an interesting symbioses with public law. Another development on this topic is that food businesses are inspected more often by private auditors than by public inspectors. Effects in terms of receiving or being denied certification far outweigh public law sanctions. In short private law has changed an entire legal infrastructure for the food sector. It emerges as competing with the public law regulatory infrastructure. This book is of interest to all who concern themselves with food law legislation and litigation and the evolving role of private standards on changing the landscape of food chains and innovation.
