Among many minerals Se has a special place being the most controversial…trace element with a narrow gap between essentiality and toxicity. Indeed there are important environmental issues considering selenium as a pollutant from the one hand and global selenium deficiency on the other. In fact, Se deficiency is considered as a risk factor for the development of various diseases in human and animals. Decreased Se availability from soils as a result of low soil pH and usage of synthetic fertilizers is the major concern in European countries causing inadequate Se levels in food and feeds. Furthermore, it seems likely that sodium selenite used for the last 30 years as a feed supplement is not an optimal form of Se and the usage of organic selenium in animal diets could help to maintain optimal Se status as well as high immunocompetence, productive and reproductive performance. The aim of the present volume is to provide updated information on several important Se-related subjects, including Se status in Europe and ways of its improvement, advances in Se analysis and speciation in biological material, roles of selenium in poultry, pig and ruminant nutrition. Production of functional Se-enriched food, the relationship between selenium and mycotoxins, polyunsaturated fatty acids as well as reoviruses are also addressed. This collection of articles will provide nutritionists, veterinarians, human doctors, researchers and any other readers with new insights into the exciting world of the goddess of the moon - SELENIUM.

Darin wird die Melancholie als treibendes Motiv hinter Nietzsches Tragödientheorie ausgemacht - eine Melancholie, die Nietzsche delikaterweise selbst nicht einmal erwähnt. Die Melancholie als produktive Kraft und die Tragödie als Melancholietherapeutikum - diese These über Nietzsches Kultur- und Tragödientheorie entwickelt die Studie in einer Rekonstruktion der mutmaßlichen antiken Quellen. Das überraschende Ergebnis ist, dass Nietzsche als Philologe sehr ernst genommen werden muss: Die Verbindung von Melancholie und Tragödie, von pseudo-aristotelische Problema XXX,1 und aristotelischer Tragödientheorie ist echt antik. Er kann zeigen, wie Moderne, religiöse Alltagskultur und Seelsorge jeweils aufeinander wirkten. Deutlich wird eine bemerkenswerte Symbiose von bewusster Bewahrung der katholischen Kirchentradition und modernem Bayern, die dem bayerischen Katholizismus trotz aller nachlassenden Bindekraft in den folgenden Jahrzehnten gesellschaftlichen Umbruchs und konziliarer Veränderungen relativ große Stabilität verlieh. Fellners Studie liefert einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Gesellschafts- und Kulturgeschichte Bayerns und der Bundesrepublik der Ära Adenauers.

Im Verlauf des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts änderten sich jedoch die Einschätzungen über die Eigenschaften des Stoffes wie auch die Praktiken seiner Herstellung und Nutzung. In dieser Zeit entstanden jene chemischen Theorien, die auf der Möglichkeit einer analytischen, nicht mehr auf äußerlichen Kriterien wie Geschmack, Form und Farbe beruhenden Bestimmung des Stoffes Salz aufbauten und in deren Folge die beiden Bestandteile Chlor und Natrium getrennt wurden. Aufbauend auf mitteleuropäischen Fallstudien analysiert das Buch die Rolle des Wissenswandels und der neuen naturwissenschaftlichen »Experten« von Medizinern, Chemikern, Bergbau- und Agrarwissenschaftlern für diesen Veränderungsprozess, der zumeist als »Banalisierung« des Salzes in der Industrialisierung beschrieben wurde. Damit verfolgt der Autor die weitergehende Frage nach dem Einfluss der modernen Wissenschaften auf die Vorstellungen von der »natürlichen Umwelt« und den Umgang mit ihren Ressourcen.
