Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Following the Asian economic crisis of the 1990s, this is the first book to examine the structure and transformation of the labor markets and social stratification of contemporary East Asia, namely Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and China, focusing in particular on gender inequality. It deals with social mobility and gender differences in unemployment, temporary employment and self-employment. Additionally, gender segregation, social identity and suicide rates are also addressed.Taken together, the issues raised in this volume reinforce the advantage of a comparative approach to East Asian Studies. The findings, supported by strong statistical analysis, clearly call into question a longstanding view that East Asian gender regimes and class structure are homogeneous. Indeed, this is demonstrably not the case, as Labor Markets, Gender and Social Stratification in East Asia shows, revealing as it does considerable diversities in labor markets, gender regimes, and social mobility within East Asian societies due to historical and institutional differences.Contributors include: Chang Chin-Fen, Kim Young-Mi, Oda Akiko, Phang Hanam, Sakaguchi Yusuke, Shibata Haruka, Takamatsu Rie, Takenoshita Hirohisa, Tarohmaru Hiroshi, Xie Guihua, and Yamato Reiko.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Male homosexual narratives in various genres and media--from 'high-brow' literature by distinguished female authors to 'pornographic' comic books produced and distributed by amateurs--have attracted the attention of a number of cultural critics in Japan and abroad. This book represents the first extensive critical attempt to examine Japanese women's narratives of male homosexuality/homoeroticism, addressing not only popular culture genres, but also the considerable body of critically acclaimed literary works (with English translations of the original works). The result is an in-depth analysis of the ways in which female fantasies of male homosexuality/homoeroticism may be composed, acknowledged, and interrogated.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Beyond hegemonic thoughts, post-Western sociology enables a new dialogue between East Asia (China, Japan, Korea) and Europe on common and local knowledge to consider theoretical continuities and discontinuities, to develop transnational methodological spaces, and co-produce creolized concepts. With this new paradigm in social sciences we introduce the multiplication of epistemic autonomies vis-à-vis Western hegemony and new theoretical assemblages between East Asian and European sociologies. From this ecology of knowledge this groundbreaking contribution is to coproduce a post-Western space in a cross-pollination process where 'Western' and 'non-Western' knowledge do interact, articulated through cosmovisions, as well as to coproduce transnational fieldwork practices.

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -This study attempts to synthesize Joseph de Maistre's historical (and political) reflections on a phenomenon as momentous as the French Revolution. Although not a professional historian or philosopher, Maistre's merit lies in integrating his interpretation of the French Revolution within the broader framework of cultural transformations (particularly those of a moral and epistemological nature) that underpinned it: the Protestant Reformation and the Enlightenment.José Miguel Nanni Soares seeks to demonstrate that the Savoyard Count's reaction to the Enlightenment-revolutionary project not only aligns with contemporary interpretations of the genesis of the modern world but also, despite his vehement defense of the system of authority (monarchy as a political regime and Catholicism as a spiritual authority), his traditionalism did not lead to a mere desire for a straightforward restoration of the Ancien Régime. Paradoxically, his thought was informed by humanist and rationalist premises. 518 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - A neglected topic in the research on yoga and meditation traditions, the extraordinary capacities called yoga powers are at the core of the religious imagination in the history of religions in South Asia. Yoga powers explained the divine, the highest gods were thought of as great yogins, and since major religious traditions considered their attainment as an inevitable part of the salvific process the textual traditions had to provide rational analyses of the powers. The essays of the book provide a number of new insights in the yoga powers and their history, position and function in the Hindu, Buddhist and Jain traditions, in classical Yoga, Ha?ha Yoga, Tantra and Saiva textual traditions, in South Asian medieval and modern hagographies, and in some contemporary yoga traditions.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - This series of eight articles connected by the common theme 'Law Meets Film' presents a thought-provoking analysis of law and legal protagonists as seen in the movies of contemporary filmmakers. It distinguishes courtroom dramas, films on legal problems, and films mirroring law, ranging from illustration of law (education in law schools), over problem awareness (sociological approach) to the questioning of the role and function of law and lawyers (philosophical approach). The focus lies on the analysis of three successful, contemporary films seen from a legal, sociological, political and artistic perspective. All three are narrative, but they are situated in different cultural and linguistical contexts (France, USA and Turkey). Each film is characteristic for one of the categories, and each of them is discussed by two authors stemming from different countries and backgrounds, but aware of the international perspectives.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - What are the contemporary afterlives of the medieval mystical tradition How do its searching questions about subjectivity, language, time, sex, bodies, divine love, and divine absence continue to shape theology, literature, history, Black Studies, psychoanalysis, and gender studies today This book asks not only how scholars interpret medieval mystical theology, but how turning to premodern insights, practices, and struggles can help articulate urgent contemporary concerns. Offering a thematic overview across disciplines, it traces how contemporary thinkers have received, reimagined, and transformed Christian medieval mystical texts and tropes. It also returns to the medieval sources themselves--to reveal their complexity, open new paths for analysis, and provide essential background for readers newly encountering these traditions.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - It has long been a charism of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) that major decisions have been made not by a small leadership group at the apex of the organisation but by the largest possible gathering of the worshipping community, locally or nationally, seeking prayerfully to discern the way forward. However, partly associated with the fragmentation of belief among its members, this volume indicates that over the past 40 years the widely-shared responsibility for decisions has become more performative than actual, and that increasingly centralised decision-making has changed the ecclesiology of the Society of Friends in Britain.

518 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -Recent scholarship has focused on John's relationship to Judaism, his intertextual method, and his portrayal of John the Baptist, yet few connect these topics. We know the Evangelist is a masterful storyteller, particularly with his characters, which raises the question: Could we view the relationship between the Fourth Gospel and Judaism through the lens of the Baptist This study explores the intersection of scriptural allusions and characterization related to John the Baptist, uncovering another perspective to the complex interplay between Judaism and the Fourth Gospel. Readers will discover how John the Baptist emerges as a key figure, illuminating the narrative and reinforcing the Gospel's themes. This engaging exploration challenges conventional interpretations and invites the reader to see the Fourth Gospel in a new light 264 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The Roman Empire was shaped and consolidated by pro-Roman and imperialistic discourses, but also by the words and actions of its enemies and critics. Discourses and actions of opposition to Rome had an impact on how Rome was conceived and forced the Empire to react. Repressing them was one response, but other reactions were also possible. In that sense, the very enunciation of Rome and its Empire as 'enemy', or the selection of certain features of the empire against which opposition was exercised, can be interpreted as a way of shaping or consolidating the empire.

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - What happened to Four Quartets in Italy How were they read by Italian intellectuals This volume traces the history of the Italian reception of Eliot's masterpiece, from the early struggle for appropriation in literary magazines - where the poems were alternately framed as expressions of resignation or hope, Hermetic grammar or intimate music - to their eventual canonization and illustration. While two Neapolitan translators, influenced by Elio Vittorini, offered an ideological reading, Florentine poets sought to make Eliot's verses sound precious and obscure. It was a woman poet who first provided a religious interpretation of the poem, a diplomat who finally published it in book form and an Argentinian artist who translated its words into images.

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - This is the first full-length monograph published on one of the most intriguing and knotty challenges of the Biblical Hebrew verbal system: the so-called 'prophetic perfect' or 'prophetic' use of qa?al. This study takes a strong linguistic approach, improving and expanding on other scholars' advances, and makes unique contributions through a culturally and conceptually contextualised approach to prophetic texts. These findings are then confirmed through comparative analysis of Akkadian, Aramaic, and other ancient Near Eastern texts. While not the final word on the matter, this book furthers the discussion of this very old and multifaceted issue.

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - How does French poetry navigate the advent of the digital and an increasingly polarized political landscape Centering on the 1990s to the present, this book examines poetry's turn towards the public and its problems. While earlier poets privileged the language of personal expression, French poets today appropriate and reorganize the discourses of contemporary society. They turn to new approaches, adopting techniques from disciplines like the visual arts, and integrating an array of media into their works. Collapsing the boundaries separating poetry and its outsides, poets challenge the autonomy of literature and probe the language and practices that structure contemporary experience.
