Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - As a gateway to the central Piazza Maggiore and a work of singular beauty and elegance, the Neptune Fountain is one of Bologna's most prized artistic gems, recognized by all but understood by very few. Richard Tuttle's monograph represents the first comprehensive study of this iconic monument, executed between 1563 and 1567 by the Flemish artist Giambologna and the Sicilian architect Tomaso Laureti, that considers all of the complex aspects of its commission, planning, execution, iconography, and urban impact. Working with an extraordinary body of documentary and visual materials, Richard Tuttle (1941-2009)--one of the world's foremost authorities on Renaissance Bologna--reveals how the fountain was created collaboratively by papal administrators and artists, how it depended on contemporary hydraulic technology, communicated political messages, and became an instrument of urban renewal. The book's broad appeal, scholarly rigor, and eloquent writing promise to make it an indispensable source on Italian sixteenth-century sculpture, architecture and urban planning, as well as a definitive text on this remarkable Renaissance fountain.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - 'Individuality' is one of the central categories of modern society. Can the roots of modern individuality be found in pre-modern times Or is our way of thinking about ourselves a very recent phenomenon This book takes a theoretical approach to the problem, derived from Niklas Luhmann's system theory, in which different forms of individuality are linked to different structures of society in modern and pre-modern times. The papers in this volume approach this problem by discussing a broad variety of medieval and early modern sources, including charters and seals, letters, and naming-practices in a late medieval town. Self-representation is also considered, in 'hous Elektronisches Buch' and drawings. Textual studies include autobiography in German Humanism, and concepts of individuality and gender in late medieval literary texts.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - This study analyzes in detail the Novum opus dominicale of John Waldeby, a member of the convent of the Augustinian friars in York. This unedited collection of some sixty sermons for Sundays and major feasts is extant in two manuscripts in the Bodleian Library (Oxford), MSS Laud misc. 77 and Bodley 687. The present study places the work and the preacher within the wider context of mendicant preaching as mass communication in the Middle Ages. In doing so, it focuses on the educational environment which encompasses conventual education and preaching to the laity, and on the library in which this model sermon collection was compiled and used, identifying the role and meticulous design of the mendicant library collection. Through a detailed examination of sermon form in conjunction with Robert of Basevorn's Forma praedicandi, it tries to disentangle the intricate considerations involved in the processes of sermon composition and reveals the strategies of interpretation and communication in the use of exempla and imagery in preaching. It investigates the careful organization of Waldeby's work as a cycle of sermons for an entire year. In this way, it makes possible a deeper understanding of a wide range of complex issues from composition to reception through the prism of this important fourteenth-century sermon collection.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - In 1327 Pope John XXII granted the Hermits of St. Augustine joint possession of San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro in Pavia, a church that until then had been for a century in the sole charge of the Canons Regular of St. Augustine. Both orders claimed a founding by St. Augustine himself, whose relics were somewhere in the church - although their precise location was unknown. The unprecedented division of the church and the ensuing conflict between the Hermits and the Canons were embedded in the larger struggle between the forces of universal church and regional state that engulfed the city of Pavia and ultimately much of Italy in the fourteenth century. Both city and church were contested repeatedly among the papacy, the empire, and the Visconti. This book is a study of the political negotiation between the papacy and the Visconti conducted by the Hermits at San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro in the Trecento - and a related examination of the Arca di Sant'Agostino, the patronage and iconography of which were deeply enmeshed in that larger historical context. At a basic level, the Arca promotes the Hermits' claims over those of the Canons Regular, creating a collective, institutional memory of the Hermits that identifies them as the true sons and heirs of Augustine by appropriating his writings, relics, and biography. However, the Arca is also a remarkable document of the Hermits' role in the complex political negotiations between the papacy and the Visconti. That the Arca di Sant'Agostino was paid for almost entirely by donations from Galeazzo II Visconti, his wife Blanche of Savoy, and their political allies is a circumstance that has never been examined. There is much in the iconography of the Arca that is relevant to the Visconti, such as the prominent depiction of the Virtues, recalling Giangaleazzo Visconti's title, The Count of Virtues. The iconography also includes the Quattro Santi Coronati, emblematic figures of papal temporal power. I link them to the Donation of Constantine, the forged document that served for centuries as the legal basis for papal temporal power. The promotion of papal plentitudo potestatis played a central role in Augustinian doctrine, explaining the Hermits' unusually close political affiliation with the papacy. Thus, the Arca iconography embraces three seemingly disparate agendas: the Hermits' own claims to St. Augustine, the celebration of Visconti authority in Lombardy, and the promotion of papal temporal power. …

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - This book investigates the origins and transformations of medieval image culture and its reflections in theology, hagiography, historiography and art. It deals with a remarkable phenomenon: the fact that, after a period of 500 years of absence, the tenth century sees a revival of monumental sculpture in the Latin West. Since the end of Antiquity and the pagan use of free-standing, life-size sculptures in public and private ritual, Christians were obedient to the Second Commandment forbidding the making and use of graven images. Contrary to the West, in Byzantium, such a revival never occurred: only relief sculpture - mostly integrated within an architectural context - was used. However, Eastern theologians are the authors of highly fascinating and outstanding original theoretical reflections about the nature and efficacy of images. How can this difference be explained Why do we find the most fascinating theoretical concepts of images in a culture that sticks to two-dimensional icons often venerated as cult-images that are copied and repeated, but only randomly varied And why does a groundbreaking change in the culture of images - the revival of monumental sculpture - happen in a context that provides more restrained theoretical reflections upon images in their immediate theological, liturgical and artistic contexts These are some of the questions that this book seeks to answer. The analysis and contextualization of the revival of monumental sculpture includes reflections on liturgy, architecture, materiality of minor arts and reliquaries, medieval theories of perception, and gift exchange and its impact upon practices of image veneration, aesthetics and political participation. Drawing on the historical investigation of specific objects and texts between the ninth and the eleventh century, the book outlines an occidental history of image culture, visuality and fiction, claiming that only images possess modes of visualizing what in the discourse of medieval theology can never be addressed and revealed.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - This book opens to the reader the world of early medieval Armenia: its sacred landscapes, striking churches, and rich literary and religious traditions. Examination of three sculpted and inscribed monuments, produced during the global wars of the seventh century, demonstrates the close engagement of Armenia with Byzantine imperial interests and with contemporary events in the Holy Land. The dramatic context of the military frontier, and the apocalyptic expectations of its contemporaries, shaped a vibrant visual culture with ties to both the Byzantine and Sasanian worlds. The seventh-century monuments of Armenia are important not just as an extraordinary moment of local cultural production; they fill a crucial gap in our knowledge about the medieval traditions of the Christian East at a time from which little survives from Constantinople and the imperial heartland. East of Rome, North of Jerusalem is the first English-language book devoted to the subject. …

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The Florentine painter Andrea del Castagno (c. 1419-1457) was a central figure of the Italian Renaissance, and his work appears in every major survey textbook on the period. Giorgio Vasari described him a master of drawing and a constant innovator. Vasari also however claimed that Andrea was a cold-blooded assassin, a man who left a self-portrait as Judas and who had murdered a fellow painter to obtain the secret of painting in oil. When Andrea del Castagno drew, he drew blood. The story is untrue; the few documents on the artist suggest an uneventful life and a very successful short career. Yet Vasaris tale is suggestive, and it serves as the starting point of this book, the first monograph study of Andrea del Castagno in more than three decades. Many of the painter's visual experiments were artistic dead-ends, seldom or never repeated, and they reveal the limits of a whole emerging visual system. This is painting that struggles to update old schemata for new antiquarian concerns and a new artistic order; natural, supernatural, and imaginary phenomena are all uneasily subject to the same norms of depiction and the same totalizing visibility. In a series of close analyses of key works, this book argues that Andrea del Castagno's art of creative disruption lays bare the problems and paradigms of early Western art. It is a limit case at the moment when the idea of art was itself coming into being.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Volume editorial board: Erik Thoen (Ghent University, Belgium) & Tim Soens (University of Antwerp, Belgium) in association with: Paul Brassley (University of Exeter, UK), Fulgence Delleaux (Université de Namur, Belgium), Laurent Herment, Michael Kopsidis (IAMO, Halle, Saale, Germany), Per Grau Møller (University of Southern Denmark, Denmark), Janken Myrdal (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Sweden), Alexandra Sapoznik (King's College, London, UK), Yves Segers (University of Leuven, Belgium) Agriculture is always a struggle with the environment since agricultural production is in fact applied ecology. However, in the past this struggle with environment was to a large extent determined by social organisation, which was regionally very diverse. The aim of this volume is to fi nd out how, when and within which structural boundaries, land was made useful for agriculture. In the first part of each chapter, this is studied in general, focusing on the evolution of land use: how and why was land reclaimed and by whom How intensively was this land used Which actors played a part in this process What were the environmental and social limits In the second part production techniques and production systems are scrutinized: crop choices, crop rotations, the importance of fallow and cattle, crop yields etc. All this is examined in light of diff erent farming strategies and social conditions. The comparative approach of this volume in the Rural Economy and Society Series also enables a new and innovating perspective on the occurrence and impact of 'agricultural' and 'green' revolutions in the past. …

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The Liber Floridus (1121), composed, written and illustrated by Canon Lambert of Saint-Omer, is the earliest illustrated encyclopedic compilation of the Latin West. Its autograph (Ghent, University Library, MS 92), a masterpiece of Romanesque book art and one of the most complicated manuscripts ever made, has been studied by the author for almost half a century. The present book is the culmination of this research and provides a detailed codicological and textual analysis, showing how this wonderful book was put together and which are the hidden ideas Lambert sought to develop in its hundreds of texts and pictures dealing with astronomy, geography, natural history, history, religion and countless other subjects. The book is illustrated with some 100 colour reproductions and numerous diagrams of quire structures. Three tables help the reader to understand the author's argument, and full indices give access to the text and provide the basis for further investigation of individual chapters and pictures.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The painter Joos van Cleve (c. 1485/90-1540/41) founded an important and influential workshop in Antwerp at the beginning of the sixteenth century. His business instinct and managerial character ensured that the shop ran smoothly and that there were both local and international clients for his output. More than 300 works are currently attributed to Van Cleve and his workshop. It is a remarkably large oeuvre, far exceeding that of any other contemporary Antwerp artist. The paintings that left his shop are of a superb quality and craftsmanship. Van Cleve and his assistants were responsible for lifelike portraits, altarpieces of varying sizes, and the mass production of popular devotional panels with subjects like The Holy Family, The Madonna of the Cherries and The Infants Christ and St John the Baptist Embracing. How, then, is it possible that these paintings are of such a high quality and craftsmanship This book contains the answer. The international nature of Antwerp's economy, and of its art trade in particular, made Joos van Cleve and his paintings known far beyond the confines of the Low Countries. Although the information about his life and the composition of his oeuvre was unclear for a long time, Joos van Cleve can now once again be numbered among the great successful painters of the early sixteenth century.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Medieval art has most often been extracted from its audible ambience, denying us means to understand the way it would have been experienced in a sonic context. Although sound is probably the most difficult component of the past to reconstruct, it was also the most pervasive, whether planned or unplanned, instrumental or vocal, occasional or ambient. This volume brings together specialists in architecture, manuscript illumination, and musicology to reconsider the relationship between sound and image in the visual cultures of eastern and western Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. The authors of Resounding Images take a variety of approaches to the now-missing intersection between the visual and the aural.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Civic group portraits, depicting trades and guilds, militias, magistrates, governors of charitable institutions and confraternities, were in the old duchy of Brabant during the Ancien Regime much better represented than is generally thought. Some hundred paintings are revealed, especially in the cities of Antwerp, Brussels, Leuven and Mechelen. For the first time, the book zooms in on this important subgenre of Flemish portraiture. The paintings present a wide variety of compositional types and integrated iconographic elements. Monumental life-size portraits coexist with small scale representations. At the same time, there is a clear differentiation in typology according to the city where they were produced. Along with the formal analysis, attention is paid to the material-technical genesis of these compositions, combining in some cases visual observation with scientific imagery and archival evidence. Also the question why patrons would order a group portrait, and how to interpret such 'corporate splendour', is dealt with, making use of the richly collected contemporary documents, which permit to contextualize the portraits and, in some cases, reconstruct their original habitat. They thus shed light on a number of factors that were involved in the realization of Brabantine civic group portraits: the type of patrons and their socio-economic and political position; the immediate cause for ordering a group portrait; the artists called upon; the prices and terms of payment; and the destination - (semi)public / private, sacral / secular - of the paintings.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - This volume contains an impressive range of texts, from Horace (Cat. 17) and Ovid (Cat. 61) to the earliest known copy of the Collectio Lanfranci (Cat. 5) and Gerard of Cremona's translations of Rasis' works (Cat. 93). The bulk, however, consists of Bibles of two kinds: imposing glossed books, produced in great numbers in the twelfth-century, and their thirteenth-century successors, the compact pandects. Both categories include some of the most richly illuminated French manuscripts of the period. Among the former are two deluxe sets made for Thomas Becket, the first completed while he was in exile in Pontigny and Sens from 1164 until 1170 (Cat. 27-31), the second edited after his martyrdom by his secretary Herbert of Bosham (Cat. 32-34). The majority of the thirteenth-century Bibles are so-called 'Paris' or 'pocket' Bibles produced from the 1220s onwards, mostly in Paris, and containing the biblical books in a standard order. They are illuminated in a variety of figure and ornamental styles, some comparable to the Bibles moralisees of c.1220-1240 (e.g. Cat. 72), others bearing no resemblance to them (e.g. Cat. 73). There are also notable exceptions of complete Bibles made not in Paris, but in North-Eastern France or Champagne (e.g. Cat. 70), and displaying iconography, figure styles and order of books different from those found in their better-known Parisian contemporaries. We hope that the inclusion of numerous images in full colour representing Bibles illuminated in all of these different styles will inspire and support further research, especially on the ornamental initials which deserve more attention. While this volume contains outstanding examples of illumination, notably the work of the itinerant Simon Master (Cat. 46), it also includes books that are modest in artistic terms, but valuable in other ways. Among them is a glossed Ezekiel which boasts one of the finest Romanesque bindings to survive in Cambridge collections, made almost certainly in Paris c.1160-1170 (Cat. 41). Other aesthetically unassuming volumes form important groups of material, for instance, the books assembled by Master Robert Amiclas during his forty years in France and given or sold by him to the Cistercian Abbey of Buildwas in Shropshire (Cat. 20-26, 37).…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The manuscript library at Holkham Hall is among the most significant private collections in the world-yet no catalogue of its riches has ever been published. The volumes in this series will cover all the Holkham manuscripts and open up these hidden treasures to scrutiny for the first time. This first volume in the Catalogue is devoted to the heart of the collection at Holkham Hall: manuscripts made in Italy in the Middle Ages and the age of humanism. This first part of Volume 1 covers one hundred and twenty-seven Italian manuscripts: biblical and liturgical codices (notably a lavishly illuminated Book of Hours made for Lorenzo de' Medici), patristic texts, and the exceptional collection of Latin classical authors collected by Thomas Coke (1697-1759). New attributions to illuminators and significant discoveries in textual history and provenance will stimulate new research; every manuscript catalogued is generously illustrated, and a full bibliography and indices are also included. A substantial historical introduction, drawing on unpublished archives at Holkham, reconstructs in detail for the first time the formation and development of the Holkham manuscript library in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The paintings that Rubens devoted to the theme of the youth of Christ are among the most impressive and influential examples of art that expressed Roman Catholic spirituality as reasserted at the Council of Trent. The vast majority of these works are his numerous images of the Adoration of the Shepherds and the Adoration of the Magi. The oldest sources for these and other scenes from Christ's youth are of course the accounts of the Gospels, but these were usefully completed by several supplementary descriptions, more especially the Apocrypha, patristic literature, and the pious legends woven around the birth of Christ in the course of the Middle Ages. In his interpretations of the scenes from Christ's youth, Rubens built to a large extent on a pictorial tradition that had developed in the Low Countries and Italy in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, in which mediaeval views and patterns originating from Northern Europe had merged with those of the Italian Renaissance. In Rubens's representations of scenes from Christ's youth, and especially in his many interpretations of the themes of the Adoration of the Shepherds and the Adoration of the Magi, the ideas of Counter-Reformation iconography found their most explicit embodiment in the clear Eucharistic connotations that are present in these works.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - This volume presents the first comprehensive study of the Chronique Anonyme Universelle, a lavishly illustrated scroll history of the world from Creation to the fifteenth century. Working in a French noble library around the year 1410, the anonymous compiler of the Chronique told the story of humanity - nearly six thousand years by his reckoning - by editing historical texts at his disposal, arranging them in parallel columns on a vertical scroll, and filling the inter-columnar space with complex genealogical diagrams. The Chronique reflects a particular and particularly French self-image and worldview that become increasingly apparent as the reader traverses its direct and unbroken line from the Bible, Egypt, Greece and Troy to the histories of the Papacy, the Roman and Holy Roman Empires, the Crusades, and the royal houses of France and England. The present volume includes an extensive study of the sources, origin, transmission and illustration of the Chronique along with a critical edition, facing translation, and the entireminiature cycle of manuscript W (ca. 1465, now in private hands).
