Neuware - The idea to assemble an Album Amicorum Albert Dunning - a Festschrift to celebrate the 65th birthday of the distinguished musicologist - came from within the Faculty of Musicology of Pavia University. And to accomplish that aim, thirty scholars - colleagues, friends and pupils - have brought toget…her their separate skills. Dunning's long career dedicated to musicology has spanned at least four decades; and throughout, it has had a specifically international character. His studies at the University of Amsterdam were crowned in 1969 with a doctorate and a dissertation entitled Die Staatsmotette: 1480-1555. The work was duly published and immediately established itself as a Standardwerk. There followed the years of research in Vienna and Munich, then those of teaching and research at Tubingen, Syracuse (NY) and Poitiers. A brief interlude in Frankfurt was succeeded by a longer period in his home country at the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam, the Rijksuniversiteit of Utrecht and the Netherlands Institute of Advanced Studies of Wassenaar. Since 1988 Albert Dunning has been a professor of History of Modern and Contemporary Music at the University of Pavia's Faculty of Musicology, based in the city of Cremona. The essays collected in the present volume pay a tribute to Albert Dunning's preferred fields of research: the vocal music of the Humanist and Renaissance period and the music of the 18th century, with a special partiality for Mozart and Locatelli. Regarding Locatelli, Dunning has not only issued the fundamental monograph Pietro Antonio Locatelli: der Virtuose und seine Welt, but also directed the (recently completed) critical edition of the great violinist's Opera Omnia. The bulk of this Album Amicorum is therefore devoted to contributions on the music of the Renaissance, Baroque and Classical periods. The occasional incursions into other areas of inquiry are to be understood as a reflection of the broad interests that Dunning has constantly cultivated, especially in his teaching.

He used costume to forge a complex and memorable image of his English patrons, the Caroline courtiers, one that captured thei…r ideals and yet had resonance for many years after his death. Van Dyck established new conventions for the representation of dress in portraits that held sway until the end of the seventeenth century. Later generations of English, Dutch, and French painters, used Van Dyck's innovations as a touchstone for a new manner of dressing sitters, one that was partially fictional, and much more casual and unbuttoned than had ever been represented before. This book shows that an understanding of dress can offer a new way of revealing the associations and ideals that a portait mayhave projected, and that the history of costume provides a unique set of tools with which to analyze the creativity and contributions of Van Dyck.

Neuware - This book highlights the importance of secular and profane prints for the reconstruction and understanding of themes popular in the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance, and examines their function as patterns for the other arts, and as sources for moral teaching and entertainment. As successors… to the marginal illuminations of medieval manuscripts these prints represent the 'low' arts, and as such have licence for subversion and comedy. They are lower both in medium and subject matter than paintings, concentrating on foolish and sinful behaviour, on world-upside-down situations and on base human passions, all to be discussed as a mirror of human folly and depravity. Indeed, some images cross the barriers of decency, resulting in scatological and grotesque representations. The medieval Church was much exercised by the sin of lust, and women since the Fall were seen as temptresses incarnate, represented on prints as subjugating men, deceiving them and, generally, making fools of them. Peasants, equally lecherous but stupid are depicted carousing at Peasant Festivals, rather than working. Other popular themes are of Wild People, who live in harmony with nature, and protect the procreation of human families, and outcasts, such as beggars, cripples and quacks. Prints also illustrate the historical concerns of the period, such as the Peasants' War in Germany, and the wars in Italy, represented by images of vain soldiers and death. Overall, the picture gained from secular and profane prints is one of humanity abandoning itself to the sins of the flesh and, therefore, folly; real life is in details only, to serve in the interest of a satirical, yet convincing, illustration of the world, often with a didactic aim.

Neuware - Rubens' book 'Palazzi di Genova' was well diffused in European countries as England, the Netherlands, France, Germany and Italy thanks to the numerous contacts the famous painter and diplomat maintained in humanistic, artistic and political circles. From 1622 on this book, containing two vo…lumes, was edited at several times during the 17th and 18th Century. But the direct influences of the numerous facades, plans, cross-sections, staircases and building details on modern architecture look rather limited, especially in his own country. In this study, several scholars in architectural history analyse how the examples of Genoese palazzi and churches as presented by Rubens were accepted in different European countries. Much attention is given to the question if these examples inspired a new architectural typology, in which the inner court of the houses was substituted by a 'salone in mezzo'. An attempt is made to situate Rubens' book among the late 16th and early 17th Century treatises and model books. The way in which Rubens presented the new Genoese architecture of villa's, palaces and churches and the introduction he wrote as a 'painter-architect' to this book were so modern at that time, that the reception of this prestigious edition in folio had more to do with changes in considering architectural theory and practice as with the propagation of a late renaissance style influenced by Antique examples.
