Neuware -The present doctoral thesis was developed within the framework of the research project 'Deformation Capacity of Structural Concrete'. This project aims at developing a consistent and experimentally verified theory of the deformation capacity of structural concrete. Previous work included the development of a theoretical model, the so-called Tension Chord Model, which allows a comprehensive description of the load-deforma tion behaviour of tension members in non-prestressed and prestressed concrete struc tures. The present work focuses on a new theoretical model, the so-called Cracked Mem brane Model. For members subjected to in-plane forces this new model combines the ba sic concepts of the modified compression field theory and the tension chord model. Crack spacings and tension stiffening effects in cracked membranes are determined from first principles and the link to plasticity theory methods is maintained since equilibrium conditions are formulated in terms of stresses at the cracks rather than average stresses between the cracks. The research project 'Deformation Capacity of Structural Concrete' has been funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and the Association of the Swiss Cement Pro ducers. I was asked to write a monograph based on my talks, and the result was published by the Global Analysis Research Center of that University in 1994. The monograph treated deficiency modules and liaison theory for complete intersections. Over the next several years I continually thought of improvements and additions that I would like to make to the manuscript, and at the same time my research led me in directions that gave me a fresh perspective on much of the material, especially in the direction of liaison theory. This re sulted in a dramatic change in the focus of this manuscript, from complete intersections to Gorenstein ideals, and a substantial amount of additions and revisions. It is my hope that this book now serves not only as an introduction to a beautiful subject, but also gives the reader a glimpse at very recent developments and an idea of the direction in which liaison theory is going, at least from my perspective. One theme which I have tried to stress is the tremendous amount of geometry which lies at the heart of the subject, and the beautiful interplay between algebra and geometry. The peculiarity of this book is that all back the sampled-data systems are considered in continuous time, so no discrete time schemes are presented. And finally, we pay a little at tention to pulse-amplitude modulation which was treated in a vast number of publications. The primary fields of our interest are pulse width, pulse-frequency, and pulse-phase modulated control systems. The study of such systems meets with substantial difficulties. An engineer, who embarks on theoretical investigations of a pulse-mo dulated control, is often embarrassed by the sophisticated mathe matical tools he needs to know. When a mathematician, who looks for practical applications of his mathematical machinery, meets with these systems, he faces a lot of of complicated technical schemes and terms. Probably this is the reason why publications on pulse modu lation are seldom in scientific journals.
