Die Studie zeigt, dass Sartre noch über Diltheys biographische Theorie und Praxis hinausgeht und Existentialismus, Marxismus und Psychoanalyse zu einem methodischen Modell verflicht. Worin besteht die Originalität der in der Flaubertbiographie «L'idiot de la famille» angewandten regressiv-progressiven Methode Sartres bzw. geht diese Methode insoweit über die bisher angewandten biographischen Verfahren hinaus, daß man von einem Modell sprechen kann? Diese Ausgangsfrage schließt das Problem eines sinnvollen Vergleichs ein, und zwar insofern, als die philosophischen Voraussetzungen des letzten Hauptwerks Sartres für die Gattung Biographie ungewöhnlich sind und ein solcher Vergleich nur sinnvoll sein kann mit einem Theoretiker der Biographie gleichen Niveaus.
