This is the 1958 Official Guide Book to the ancient City of Bath, published by the Spa Committee of the Bath City Council in paperback format , under the leadership of L. J. P. Bedford, Spa Director of the Pump Room. He wrote the introduction, and likely had much to do with the organization and writing of each of the sections of the book. Bath, located in Somerset, is one of the oldest cities in England; indeed the ancient Roman Baths are still a marvelous attraction in the town. There is much more than the baths to be seen , for Bath also has some of the most beautiful Georgian architecture in the country. And - Bath Abbey , in its magnificent beauty is not a building to miss! Truly a lovely urban setting, with much to see and do as this vintage guide book makes clear. It is illustrated throughout with sepia tinted photographs, accompanied by a fold-out line map, and genial instructions for visiting and touring the town. This paperback tour guide has a wrap-around color painting on its cover depicting the Royal Crescent, designed by architect John Wood; the painting was done by R. W. M. Wright, who was Library and Art Gallery Director for the Bath Municipality. Much of what is described in the book still exists, although even though the historical aspects of the city are still there, there will have been changes to the organization for tours made since 1958. There is much in the book concerning further attractions to be found in the vicinity surrounding Bath. One of the special delights of old guide book such as this are the many period advertisements for hotels, restaurants, and other commercial businesses. In such things time's passage has truly made many changes. These old ads are delicious in their evocation of the past - a past so seemingly close, yet gone forever. I find particularly piquant the page advertising Roman City Bath Coach Operations (wouldn't it be lovely to tour in the old coach as shown?); the ad for James and Sons automobile rentals which features a picture of a classic Vauxhall (Self drive or Chauffeur Driven); and how many of the old hotels, cafes, restaurants and tea houses will still be around? Will West's Grill, the Sedan Chair Restaurant, or The Venice Coffee Bars, or Carwardines Georgian Tea Rooms still be serving? - or The Old Red House Restaurant (Established in 1798 - has it survived?
