Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Nestled between Toledo and Cleveland near the Sandusky Bay is a quiet lake region, a haven for vacationers and permanent residents alike.Claiming 107 miles of Lake Erie's coastline, Eastern Ottawa County, Ohio, is home to several coastal communities, including the small city of Port Clinton, the placid land masses of the Bass Islands, and the Marblehead Peninsula, home to a popular lighthouse. The author's window into this area, however, never overlooks the labor required to create and sustain its resort attractions. We meet the train conductors, teachers, mail carriers, ice harvesters, and community leaders who helped put Ottawa County on the map. We are offered many glimpses of boats on local waterways, some delivering fish, others ferrying passengers to the island, and still others in advance of their service during war time. And we are delivered a rare view of the many buildings that sadly failed to survive the area's catastrophic fires. This book is a living testimony to the rich and varied history of Ohio's Lake Erie communities. Resort oasis to some, manufacturing center to others, Ottawa County's texture and detail are brought vividly to life in this absorbing Images of America volume.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The four Cumberland County towns--Standish, Baldwin, Sebago, and Naples--along the west shore of Maine's second largest freshwater body of water, Sebago Lake, form the core of the latest work by Diane and Jack Barnes: Sebago Lake: West Shore. Even at a time when the vast hinterland of Maine was plagued by raids from Native Americans allied to the French, intrepid woodsmen and settlers ventured into the rugged, primeval wilderness via the Presumpscot and Saco rivers as far as Standish. But by 1830, the Cumberland & Oxford Canal was completed, and the four towns in this volume and several others in the area were linked to Portland and beyond. For the next 40 years, the area was well served by this 17-mile canal. In 1870, the Portland & Ogdensburg Railroad reached the west shore of Sebago Lake. This gave birth to the colorful steamboat era, invited sportsmen, excursionists, and vacationers to flock to the area, and encouraged many enterprising farmers to open their doors to boarders. Hotels, however, soon replaced many of the boarding houses, and a strong tourism industry had begun in earnest. Through precious old photographs and extensive research, Sebago Lake: West Shore chronicles the time of the earliest settlement of Standish, Baldwin, Sebago, and Naples, to the grand hotel era and more recent times. These pages are replete with common and unfamiliar images that combine to regale the history of the west shore.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Banking in the sparsely settled, frontier Florida of the nineteenth century was not for the timid or the easily discouraged. Being neither of these, the indomitable William Boyd Barnett opened a private bank in Jacksonville in 1877 that would later bear his name. Barnett and his two sons built a successful family business, and by the early 1880s, their bank had become the largest in Florida. During the next several decades, the bank played a part in a number of historically significant events, from the financing of the Disston land purchase that solidified the state's finances in the 1880s to the rebuilding of Jacksonville after the destructive 1901 fire. Over the course of its 120-year history, Barnett maintained a significant presence in Florida's economic development and in the evolution of the American banking industry. The Barnett name became synonymous with sound, conservative, well-managed banking, and at the time of its sale in 1998, Barnett was the oldest and largest banking organization in Florida. The story of this company, however, is more than just a series of strong leaders or the annual recap of asset growth and profitability. It is the story of the thousands of people, both employees and customers, who played a vital part in the bank's success. Showcasing vintage photographs and a detailed historical narrative.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - In Dorchester Volume II, local author Anthony Mitchell Sammarco continues his detailed look at this diverse town that he began in Volume I, which the Boston Globe hailed as a best-seller. Founded in 1630 by Puritans, Dorchester has experienced spectacular growth over the last few centuries; the Old Colony Railroad and later the Red Line providedimpetus for the quick development of this streetcar suburb. From a town of twelve thousand residents in 1870, when it was annexed to the city of Boston, to one hundred thousand at the turn of the century, Dorchester became home to a quarter of a million people by 1930. The development of the town in the period from 1870 to 1920 saw architects, builders, and residents all working to create a pleasant place to live and work. Dorchester's evolution from a farming community to a vibrant, buzzing town can be seen in the unique form of American architecture developed in Dorchester--the three decker, built between the 1890s and World War II, and popular among people of all classes and economic means. The influx of immigrants from countries around the world has given Dorchester a diverse and colorful character, which is the source of pride for many of its residents.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Explore the history of one of the nation's most prestigious service schools in The Naval War College. It was appropriate that the U.S. Navy's pioneer training station and principal graduate college be established at Newport. Known as The City by the Sea, Newport, Rhode Island, has a long history of maritime activity. As far back as the colonial period, Newport Harbor and Narragansett Bay have always been safe and deep havens for naval as well as commercial shipping. In 1883, Commodore Stephen B. Luce established the Naval Training Station on Coaster's Harbor Island in Newport, which became the forerunner of the modern recruit stations for enlisted men in the U.S. Navy. The next year, in 1884, Luce established the Naval War College, the first professional naval education center of its kind in the world. It soon became the U.S. Navy's premier institution for professional studies of warfare, international law, and statesmanship relating to war and peace. Among others, Luce brought to the college Capt. Alfred Thayer Mahan, the naval historian whose book, The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 1600-1783, and other works influenced naval thought throughout the world. …

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Join authors George and Carol Reed as they recount the history of Fort Ontario through vintage images in this pictorial history. In the earliest days when lakes, streams, and rivers served as highways through the wilderness, the nation that ruled the mouth of the Oswego River dominated North America. The convergence of the Oswego and Lake Ontario was a key point on the most navigable water route from the east into the interior of the continent. It was there that Fort Ontario was built. Just as quickly, however, the fort was destroyed, as competing armies seized control of this valuable point. Time after time the fort was rebuilt, and over the years it acquired a history as unique as its location. Fort Ontario: Guardian of the North is the first history of this remarkable and resilient fort, credited with being the oldest continuously garrisoned post in the United States. The book chronicles the many transformations of Fort Ontario from the time it was built in 1755 up to its present-day status as a New York State Historic Site. With paintings, maps, photographs, and informative text, the book brings back the fort's years as a company post, its World War I role as a major army hospital, and its World War II years as a shelter for Jews fleeing the Holocaust--the only wartime refugee shelter in the history of the United States.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The Crooked Billet Inn, although no longer standing, remains one of the most recognizable and well-lovedspots in Hatboro. It was there where one of Hatboro'sfounders, John Dawson, operated an inn and eatery, and where George Washington ate and slept during his pursuit of the British Army during the Revolutionary War. It is because of the popularity of the Crooked Billet Inn that Hatboro was often known simply as The Billet. There is no confusing Hatboro for anywhere else, since it is the only town with that name in the United States. First settled in the early 1700s, Hatboro grew to become an industrial and educational giant. Hatboro includes, among many others, exceptional images of the former Loller Academy, which helped Hatboro become an educationalcenter in an otherwise rural area. Also highlighted are the Brewster Aviation Company, and the equipment Brewster manufactured for the military during World War II. Of course, the Crooked Billet Inn and the Battle of Crooked Billet, Willow Grove Park, and the music of John Philip Sousa and Victor Herbert are revisited in these pages, as well as some lesser-known stories, like those of the horrors of having two competing phone companies, and the story of Matilda.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Sackets Harbor presents the unique history of a notable community that has achieved prominence as the northern headquarters in the War of 1812, as the home of the celebrated Madison Barracks, and as a revitalized tourist center. Ideally situated on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario in upstate New York, Sackets Harbor attracted the Iroquois, the Algonquin, early white settlers, and military strategists with its bounty. The village took its name from Augustus Sacket, who purchased tracts along the water in 1801 and led the first influx of settlers to the region. By 1809, the village had a military presence, but it was the War of 1812 that put Sackets Harbor on the map. In 1816, it became the site of Madison Barracks, the focus of life in the village until after World War II. Today a mecca for pleasure boating, sports fishing, and relaxation, Sackets Harbor has been dubbed a hidden treasure.…
