Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Like so many other towns in central New Jersey, Warren Township has changed dramatically over the last 40 years.Gone are the billowing fields of corn and hay, the sheep and cows lazing in the sun behind the dairies and the barns. It is difficult to imagine the Warren of yesteryear, when a few thousand hardy farmers followed the immutable seasons of planting and harvest, and life revolved around the township's many villages--Mount Horeb, Coontown, Mount Bethel, Union Village, South Stirling, Smalleytown, Warrenville, and Springdale. This delightful collection of over 200 photographs culled from family albums and the extensive archives of the Warren Township Historical Society shows a township that is fast disappearing. Caught on imperishable film are wonderful images of one-room schoolhouses, simple country homes, plain churches, and streetscapes of unpaved roads, country inns, and towering trees.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Travel through centuries of West Chester's history with never-before-seen images of the historic Pennsylvania borough.Established in 1799 in one of the three original counties in Pennsylvania, the borough of West Chester is steeped in history. West Chester serves as the county seat and is the home of West Chester University of Pennsylvania, once known as West Chester State Normal School. Two hundred years of memories vital to Pennsylvania's renowned history will be celebrated in the year 1999, West Chester's bicentennial. Much of this history is brought to life in West Chester. A collection of over two hundred images which were generously lent by West Chester residents make up this journey back into theborough's past, covering the years from the dawn of photography up to 1920. Many of the images within have never before appeared in print, and they vary from authentic photograph postcards of the community to the photographs taken between 1875 and 1910 byGilbert Cope, the co-author of The History of Chester County (1881). Also among the illustrations are old broadsides, one of which is the oldest existing Chester County broadside. The first newspaper printed in Chester County, dating back to 1794, and a sketch of one of West Chester's oldest homes round out this fascinating visual history.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Bayport, a small town on the south shore of Long Island, is the very embodiment of a village that has retained the charm and allure that once drew summer visitors at the end of the nineteenth century. Since Bayport is situated on the Great South Bay, most of its 8,000 residents revel in the view of Fire Island, that slender strand known as a barrier beach, that keeps the Atlantic Ocean honest and where it belongs. Although the history of Bayport reaches back to its origin in 1786 with William Nicoll's conveyance of inherited lands (celebrated in 1986 by a bicentennial ceremony), the pictorial history shown herein starts in 1825 with a photograph of the second wooden schoolhouse in Bayport and a line drawing of the same.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Since the colonial period, the Poughkeepsie area has been a prime location on the Hudson, midway between Albany and New York City.Referred to as the 'Queen City of the Hudson,' accessibility, scenic beauty, and a dynamic economic and cultural environment have made Poughkeepsie an excellent community in which to live, work, and play. Since the 19th century, Poughkeepsie has been a favored site by society elites, families like the Astors, Rogers, and Vanderbilts building palatial weekend homes there due to its natural beauty and proximity to New York City. Numerous Americans have left their mark here, including the Livingstons, Samuel Morse, Matthew Vassar (whom local Vassar College is named for), Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, and Thomas Watson Sr. Poughkeepsie has also been enhanced by the contributions of its African American community and by successive waves of immigrants seeking a better life. From hosting New York's United States Constitutional Ratification Convention in 1788 to becoming the location of IBM during World War II, Poughkeepsie has continued to be the site of world-changing events.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Manhattan has long been renowned for the diversity of its offering of hotels--from some of the best in the world to some of the worst.Around 1880, the entire nature of the hotel experience began to change. Formerly, hotels had been just a place to stop between here and there for a hot meal and a warm bed. Suddenly, the hotel itself became the destination. New affluence, new technologies, and new fashion all came together in the decades between 1880 and 1920 to influence the demands of hotel guests, eventually changing the hotel themselves. This book gives a glimpse into the hotels of the super rich, the not-so-rich, the middle class, the Bohemians, and the workers. In a city as dynamic as New York, it should come as no surprise that so many hotels have a juicy tidbit or two of historical gossip attached to them. Manhattan Hotels: 1880'-1920 may well be the most extensive work in print on the subject of the city's hotels in this period. Far From being a book for specialists, however, it is designed to bring Manhattan and its hotels of this era to life for all those who have been captivated by the electric excitement of the place.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The history of Rockingham County, North Carolina, is inseparable from the history of its streams and the textile communities which gradually formed around them. From the mighty Mayo, the location of the ill-fated mill fortress of Avalon in the early 1900s, to the birth of sweet Eden along the calm Smith River in the late 1960s, the residents of Rockingham County entered the twentieth century with an economy fueled by water--hydro dams for cotton mills, gristmills, and lumber yards--and by the sweat of the people; men, women and children dedicated to working hand-in-hand in the Southern spirit of cooperation for the betterment of their neighborhoods and towns. From Avalon to Eden chronicles the tragedies and triumphs pertinent to the development of present-day Rockingham County as seen through the keen eyes of postcard photographers. These gentlemen, some employed by cotton mills, captured on film the optimism and the hardships, the architecture and the landscape of village life in Avalon, Stoneville, Mayodan, Madison, Wentworth, Reidsville, and Eden. From the portrait of doffers, children employed by the factories, sitting among the ash ruins of Avalon, to the festive panoramic of World War I survivors returning by train to Draper, Spray, and Leaksville (now Eden), this book offers historical insight--it is a grand road map through times treasured and a geography all but forgotten.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - This photographic history showcases Greene County, which is located between the Rhine of America and the scenic northern Catskill Mountains.Greene County has long been a magnet for settlers, artists, writers, and travelers; it all began with Henry Hudson's exploration of the Hudson River and was followed by the arrival of Dutch settlers. Its geographic location between the Rhine of America and the scenic northern Catskill Mountains contributes to Greene County's allure, as do the Great Algonquin Flint Mines, fascinating remnants of the area's prehistoric inhabitants, the Mohegans. Much of the content in Around Greene County and the Catskills reflects everyday living, a sampling of its architecture, people, and activities which reflect a sense of history and changing lifestyles. The inclusion of the Dutch Bronck houses of 1663 and 1738, a National Historic Landmark homestead complex, sets the tone of this visual history. From colonial times through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Greene County (like other New York counties) has been affected by national conditions; its economic base has changed and adjusted accordingly. Different ethnic groups who have chosen Greene County as their home have enhanced the area's rich cultural heritage.…
