Paperback. Condición: Fair. Daniel Boone: His Own Story by Colonel Daniel Boone & The Adventures of Daniel Boone, The Kentucky Rifleman by Francis Lister Hawks. Before Davy Crockett and Kit Carson came along to share the wild frontier legend, there lived a pioneer and trailblazer named Daniel Boone - an extraordinary man, who, with his brother, Squire, explored the howling wilderness and helped settle the State of Kentucky. When this true life account was first published in the early 1800s, it served to set the record straight once and for all on the mythic Daniel Boone, and established him as a new American hero. The first part of the book is told in Boone's own words and spans twenty-five years of his life, from 1769, through the Revolutionary War, and up to 1784. The second section was written by Francis Lister Hawks as a biography, and traces Boone's life from childhood on up to his death in 1818. The book paints a vivid portrait of Boone, and allows us to experience his times-life with Shawanese, Cherokees, Wyandots, Tawas and other Indians, as well as the trials of everyday pioneer life in the mountains, the woods, and along the rivers-and takes the reader to the first white settlement in Kentucky, named Boonesborough in his honor.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. Originally published in 1913, this is a fascinating reproduction of the first American Girl Scout Handbook. Author W.J. Hoxie--a naturalist--included tips and tricks for provisioning a camp, tying knots, tending the injured, and telling time by the stars. In 1916, How Girls Can Help Their Country was adapted by Juliette Low into a newer version of the Girl Scout Handbook. The ranks of the American Girl Scouts have grown from the original eighteen members to the millions of members still active today. Through the decades, each Girl Scout has used some edition of the handbook to learn about everything from camping and first-aid, to "housewifery" and patriotism. Although the roles of women have changed over the years, the importance of the handbook has not. Complete with photographs and diagrams, this centennial edition serves as a reference for life in the times of the great-, great-great-, or even great-great-great-grandmothers of today's Girl Scouts.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Solomon Northup was born a free black man in upstate New York in 1808. By 1841, he had become a husband, a father, a raftsman, and a talented fiddle-player. That year, while his family was away, he agreed to accompany two men to Washington DC, on what he thought would be a brief trip performing for a circus. Instead, these new employers turned out to be con men, and Northup was drugged, kidnapped, and sold into slavery. Northup was transported to New Orleans and remained a slave for the next twelve years, working for a number of masters in Louisiana--some brutal, some kind. Although Northup never stopped longing for home and thinking about how he could escape, it seemed impossible to trust anyone with the facts of his life. He remained a slave for a dozen years, until he finally met a Canadian abolitionist who was able to get a letter to his family and eventually gained his freedom. After his release, Northup told his story to David Wilson, an upstate New York-based white lawyer and legislator. Northup's memoir, edited by Wilson, was published in 1853 as Twelve Years A Slave. Northup's story and his firsthand observations of plantation life and the cruel reality of slavery make this book an important document of the American south and American history.…
